My secondary featured game today is the Bundesliga clash between Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich.
Basically, I can’t say I understand Bayern being so short here. Wolfsburg had a bad campaign last year, that’s for sure, but they’ve been smart in bringing classy manager Magath in and the effects can be immediately seen too. They look more confident, more dangerous, and much more organised. Bayern, on the other hand, don’t. They’ve made some good signings pre-season with Neuer becoming their number one and Rafinha adding to their attacking prowess from full-back, not to mention German international defender Boateng’s signing. However, there’s one area they forgot to deal with and that’s in attack. Bayern simply don’t have a naturally gifted striker, in my view. Gomez is alright at best but they miss a real striker and it hinders their game. Bayern can concede against anyone in the Bundesliga but despite having a very strong midfield, they still lack in scoring enough goals to beat some sides or even when it comes to breaking through teams, which is precisely why they lost at home to Moenchengladbach last match.
Bayern miss Robben for this game, which strikes a huge blow to their creativity, particularly with Ribery not playing particularly well. They look susceptible and have a very important UEFA Champions League game in the coming days so it’s hard to imagine that all their attention will be on this game. Hosts Wolfsburg have good players and a manager that knows how to get the best out of them. For me, there’s value in laying Bayern today.
Verdict: Lay Bayern Munich at evens.

Lokomotiv Plovdiv vs Lokomotiv Sofia – home win at evens.
Yet again Lokomotiv Sofia miss integral defenders Dyakov and Savic and with a lack of firepower in their team I find it hard to give them a chance in games like this. Lokomotiv Plovdiv has made great strides in the A PFG over the past couple of years and can now be considered a regular top six/seven side for me. They’re particularly good at home and they really should win this one today with Lokomotiv Sofia weak at the back and ineffectual in front of goal.
Verdict: Lokomotiv Plovdiv to win at evens.
Petrolul Ploiesti vs Rapid Bucharest – away win at evens.
This is a very old derby so be careful. However, I’d be lying if I said that Rapid are anything but two or three classes above Petrolul. I don’t usually back Rapid away from home but they’ve looked good so far this season and have made some good signings pre-season. Lucrescu knows what he’s doing too – good manager. Looking at their competition, you have to favour either Rapid or CFR Cluj to win the title this season but we’ll see – a lot can change during a season. Nonetheless, the hosts have come up with little quality and the visitors have plenty of it. I therefore think that the away win at evens is worth a flutter today.
Verdict: Rapid Bucharest to win at evens.
