The only game that interests me today is the Soproni Liga encounter between Lombard Papa and Debreceni VSC.
My interest in this game stems from the gulf in class between the two sides, basically. Lombard Papa have impressed me in the sense that they’re showing experience now by taking their points greedily at home, as they know they must to stay in the division. Six points from six in their first two home games must be very pleasing for the hosts and they will bring momentum into this game as a result, naturally. However, they’re still short on quality and the sale of key defender Supic pre-season to Gyori ETO FC hasn’t helped that particular problem. They’ve brought in a few players in an attempt to stabilise their placing in this division but I fear it won’t be enough. Their record so far this season looks better than it is, in my opinion. Whenever they’ve encountered a side with some quality that is determined to do well, they’ve tended to lose. Everyone else they’ve faced has either been poor or had other commitments elsewhere. That should be very different today, however.
Visitors Debreceni VSC face the unusual prospect of a domestic campaign without European football but that is something they may relish after a terrible campaign last time around. Their determination to reclaim their throne is more than visible too, with five wins from five games and good signings to improve their ability as a result. Strikers Zahovaiko and Couliably both bring different things to the Debreceni VSC attack but they look good for it, either way. They enter this game on the back of a very impressive 2-1 win against reigning champions Fehervar, who are still the best side in Hungary for my money. That result will give them even better momentum ahead of this game against a rather inferior Lombard Papa and I really expect that to show today. I mean, look at Debrceni VSC’s fixtures so far this season – they’ve been far from easy with the bitter rivalry match with Ferencvaros, the trip to a decent Zalaegerszegi TE, the trip to a potent Kecskemeti TE, and now the win against reigning champions Fehervar. They’re all big feathers in the caps of Debreceni VSC who continued to impress both offensively and defensively so I fancy them to do well here.
I’d expect shorter odds for this selection, generally speaking, but I daresay the bookies have lengthened the odds due to Debreceni VSC’s abysmal away displays last season. They may have also taken into account the absences that Debreceni VSC have today with new strikers Zahovaiko and Coulibaly both absent. However, they’re a different side this year – they’re back to the tag of title challengers. They look better as a unit and far more dangerous in front of goal so the away win at 9/10 appeals to me here.
Verdict: Debreceni VSC to win at 9/10.
