Servette vs Stade Nyonnais

Free

Today’s featured game is the Challenge League encounter between giants Servette and Stade Nyonnais. Servette are flying high already this season and look set to recreate their heroics from the end of last season if they maintain their current form whereas Stade Nyonnais will undoubtedly be content with whatever they manage to get out of the Challenge League this season, if indeed it’s anything at all!

Servette are by far the biggest side in the Challenge League and it’s about time they displayed it after a lengthy period of disappointment. They were untouchable towards the back end of last season and appear to have continued their excellent run into this season too with two convincing victories already under their belts. Servette encountered Nyonnais towards the end of last season when Servette went on their excellent run and the hosts won 3-1 then, a scoreline that could well be repeated today. Barring the sale of Kusunga to Basel and Treand to Neuchatel Xamax, Servette boast a virtually identical side to last season although they have added Schaffhausen defender Schlauri and Kriens midfielder Baumann to their ranks to bolster their squad. Servette still have star striker and last year’s leading goalscorer for the hosts Eudis in their ranks and he’s already shown his intent with two goals in two games. Servette may miss the goals of Treand a little this year but overall Eudis should be able to get Servette promoted on his own so I’m not too concerned. Servette went to Liechtenstein to face notorious stiflers Vaduz on the opening day of the season and crushed them 4-1 and then overcame a good Biel-Bienne side at home last match despite excellent resilience and organsation from the visitors so I think it’s fair to say that Servette have a lot of options in their arsenal when it comes to breaking sides. down. I like Servette’s experience, ability, potency, and variety very much indeed which is why I fancy them to reclaim their rightful place in the Super League next season.

Visitors Stade Nyonnais’ overall displays rely entirely upon the displays of talented midfielder Besseyre, who was in fact their leading goalscorer last season. Nyonnais barely scored without him with all of their forwards scoring meager amounts so it’s fair to say that the French midfielder pulls the strings for Nyonnais. Nyonnais signed Portuguese striker Pimenta to increase their attacking potency but that won’t be any use today as he’s injured and thus misses the game. It wasn’t a great transfer window for Nyonnais, losing more players than they brought in, but they still have a semi-decent side and one that should be able to achieve a mid-table place if the displays of Besseyre are immense in every game! Nyonnais have started this season in atrocious fashion with back-to-back defeats, losing 4-1 at home to Schaffhausen and 1-0 away to Locarno, two poor results but nothing unexpected really. Nyonnais barely managed to avoid relegation from the Challenge League last season with just four points separating themselves from now-relegated Le Mont. Nyonnais found themselves in that predicament because they conceded heavily on the road and didn’t take their chances well enough. Nyonnais lost eight out of fifteen on the road last season whilst averaging conceding over two goals per game and little has changed to make me think that a similar record will be far from their minds this year.

Even during a “season of two halves” for Servette last year, they still averaged scoring two goals per home game and won the majority of their home games. This year, they’re starting from scratch but with some momentum that has seemingly surpassed the lengthy months in between the end of last season and the start of this season. Servette have already scored six times in two games against two good sides; what on earth are they capable of doing against a semi-decent side (at best!)? Nyonnais are in no position to do anything but lose this game and with the above in mind, taking the Servette victory with -1.5 goals at 6/5 looks a bargain.

Verdict: Servette to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 6/5.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Quilmes vs Colon de Santa Fe – away win at 29/20.

Newly-promoted Quilmes have got a lot of problems at the moment. They’ve had to sign a whole host of players in summer because of a sudden realisation that they’re not actually good enough to be a Primera Division side, which is an assessment that I frankly agree whole-heartedly with. They barely scored enough goals in the Primera B Nacional last year so why that should change against Argentina’s elite is beyond me. Quilmes have a lot of adjusting to do and to expect it to all happen in time for this tough game is ludicrous in my eyes. Colon de Santa Fe have become the Primera Division’s “nearly side” in recent years but they finally have a squad that I think are capable of winning a title. They’ve acquired Paraguayan striker Cristian Ledesma from Olimpia Asuncion, midfielder Damian Diaz from Universidad Catolica in Chile, and Gonzalo Higuain’s older brother Federico Higuain, who set the division alight last season for Godoy Cruz de Mendoza and effectively dragged them towards the top of the table. Colon already boast a wealth of experience with the likes of Grisales, Moreno y Fabianesi, Cardetti, Enria, and Garce in their squad so I find it hard to dismiss them against anyone. Colon didn’t have a good Clausura campaign last season but don’t read too much into that – a very good side they remain at all times and I think we’ll see them enjoy this Apertura considerably.

Although it’s the opening day of the season, which naturally means games are hard to call, I still fancy Colon an awful lot here, probably more than I should! Colon de Santa Fe are a good side though and the odds are far too generous with that in mind, particularly against an uneasy Quilmes side that barely know each other. For me, the value in this game is in the away win as it could and should be shorter.

Verdict: Colon de Santa Fe to win at 29/20.

Argentinos Juniors vs Huracan – home win at 4/5.

This should be a rather tight game but I fancy it because Huracan have done more damage than good in the recent transfer window, most notably losing key defender and captain Goltz to Lanus. They’ve brought in two experienced heads (Rolando Zarate – brother of Mauro, Sergio, and Ariel – big footballing family! and Angel Morales) but I can’t see either adding much to what was an arising Huracan side. Huracan have made some large changes to their side since the Clausura and I think that will have a heavy impact on their usually solid and resilient displays, particularly in the early stages of the Apertura, so I have my doubts over their ability to keep Argentinos out today, particularly without Goltz. Argentinos won the Clausura last season thanks to an averge of two goals scored per home game and thus a great number of home wins. I don’t rate them as the best side in the division, especially not with their current defence, but a top side they remain nonetheless. I’m concerned that they lost leading goalscorer Pavlovich in the transfer window as his goals and experience added a great deal to their frontline. However, Argentinos have signed Franco Niell from Deportivo Quito to replace him so we’ll have to see how that goes. Argentinos still have the foundations of a good side, however, and I expect them to start the Apertura strongly as a result, particularly against an unfamiliar Huracan side. As I said at the start of the preview – I expect a tight and low-scoring game between these two sides but a home win at 4/5 for a superior side is a bit too generous for me, even at the start of the season, so that’s my call tonight, especially with Argentinos having won back-to-back victories against Huracan in recent times and boasting four wins from their last five home games against Huracan.

Verdict: Argentinos Juniors to win at 4/5.

LASK Linz vs SV Kapfenberg  – home win at 11/10.

I criticised LASK Linz at the start of the Bundesliga season for letting too many players go and not bringing enough in, especially in attack. I hold true to my comments even now but I have to take them seriously for this game today. They still only possess two strikers – Maryleb and Zickler, arguably the oldest attacking duo in the history of football – and they’re actually missing Zickler for this game through injury! So why am I backing them? Am I crazy? Probably! However, what I’m banking on here is a mediocre Kapfenberg side that cannot play well away from home already) suffering greatly through their missing players, which are Sencar, Pavlov, Pitter, Sharifi, and there’s also a doubt over Fukal’s fitness. My problem with Kapfenberg is that I don’t see where their goals are going to come from as none of their strikers have registered a goal after three games now, two of which Kapfenberg have left without scoring. LASK may be lacking in-depth and youth but they have the ability to score goals at home as they demonstrated against a strong Austria Vienna side, losing 3-4 in the end. We should see a tight game between two low-scoring sides but I have to favour the hosts here simply because they’re playing better and because their opponents never travel well and look very unlikely to test the LASK defence today – the odds are good enough to take a chance on here!

Verdict: LASK Linz to win at 11/10.

Salzburg vs Wiener Neustadt – both sides to score at 4/6.

I don’t like using the phrase “banker” because it always seems to be paired with “this should have been” and “but they’re shit”. However, I’m very confident about this bet coming in today. Why? Well, Wiener Neustadt don’t know what defence is as their tactics rely heavily on attacking, which they’re very good at, to be fair. Don’t kid yourself here – the Bundesliga table might show them to be a great side but they’re really not a patch on reigning champions Salzburg! However, Salzburg’s morale is up and down at the moment with  2-1 defeat at bitter rivals Rapid Vienna last weekend in the Bundesliga and yet promptly followed it with a 4-1 drubbing of Cypriot champions Omonia Nicosia mid-week in the UEFA Champinos League. For all Salzburg’s attacking ability, however, they still have a lot of work left to do this year, particularly with no clean sheets in four consecutive games. Salzburg are missing Cziommer and Ulmer for this game through injury but will be pleased to welcome back defensive stalwart Afolabi into consecutive games for Salzburg. Salzburg’s addition of Boghossion now gives them a replacement target man up front so they should be back to normal in a few weeks time, really. Salzburg will have to work hard to combat an energetic and potent Wiener Neustadt today but should still be up for the task. The scoreline here the last time the two sides met was 4-2 and a similar scoreline shouldn’t be far away today. Whatever Wiener Neustadt do, they bring goals to games, usually because they score a lot of them, so I fancy them to do so today too, particularly as Salzburg aren’t at their untouchable best yet. Aigner is in potent form for Wiener Neustadt and should trouble the Salzburg backline and with Wiener Neustadt having scored in all four meetings with Salzburg since gaining promotion two seasons ago, I fancy them to at least score today. 4/6 is too generous on both sides scoring, basically, so that’s my recommendation for this game today.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 4/6.

SV Mattersburg vs Wacker Innsbruck – away win at 11/8.

This is a dubious call so do approach with caution. Why is it dubious? Well, despite the misleading early Bundesliga table, Wacker Innsbruck are still newcomers to the division despite them being a large club and they’re facing experienced campaigners SV Mattersburg, who generally manage to stay in the Bundesliga because they take points at home. However, I have to stand back in awe at the displays of Wacker since promotion because they were dealt three opening games that bigger sides than they would have crumbled at as they faced a threesome of giants – Rapid Vienna at home, Sturm Graz at home, and Salzburg away. Wacker annihlated Rapid 4-0, drew 2-2 with Sturm Graz, and had their game with Salzburg called off due to adverse weather conditions, which was fortuitous as Salzburg were not in good shape when that game came around. Wacker are bringing great enthusiasm and goals to their games and I have nothing but respect for them as a result. Mattersburg are a side that I don’t like to go against at home because they do take a lot of points here but they’ve leaked nine goals in three games, losing all three games so morale is a bit battered at the moment. The 4-1 defeat in their only home game of the side thus far against poor-travellers SV Ried will have hurt them immensely so I can only envision that an energetic and potent Wacker side will be able to do damage to them today. For me, there’s value in the away win at 11/8 although do approach with caution here for the above reasons mentioned!

Verdict: Wacker Innsbruck to win at 11/8.

Lokomotiva Zagreb vs Istra 1961 – home win at 4/6.

Simply put, there’s a big class difference here. Dinamo Zagreb really flexed their muscles last year when their second string Lokomotiva Zagreb were one of the better performing sides in the division and little has changed since then except that their opponents today Istra 1961 have gotten worse and are unlikely to survive the drop. Istra have already leaked eight goals in two games and have scored just once so they really do have problems this year. Lokomotiva haven’t burst into form yet but a win at an impressive Hrtatski Dragovoljac last match emphasised how clinical they can be and ultimately they should be able to show that today against arguably the worst side in the Prva Liga. Lokomotiva are generally very strong at home and should be too good for their opponents today – I’m just surprised that the odds are as welcoming as 4/6 on this selection.

Verdict: Lokomotiva Zagreb to win at 4/6.

Crystal Palace vs Leicester City – away win at 13/8.

The problems of Crystal Palace are generally well-documented with their financial struggles and the club still in administration as a result. However, something occurred as a result of that lately and it basically means that the FA won’t allow Crystal Palace to play any of their five new signings because the club are still technically in administration. Therefore, Palace are being forced to field quite a few youngsters in this game today. They’re still a capable enough side, especially at Selhurst Park, but so are Leicester City and they have a full and able squad to choose from. Leicester are a financially well-off club and they showed that last season by very nearly being promoted to the Premier League despite having only just been promoted from League One. Leicester’s football style generally isn’t attractive but it’s effective, which is what it needs to be in the maze of the English lower leagues. However, they still have star striker Matty Fryatt in their ranks and the experience of Steve Howard in attack so Leicester are still very much a threat in front of goal. My take on this game is that Leicester are the only one of these two sides capable of scoring and domating a game out of these two sides today and although it’s a risky bet, the odds make it look worthwhile today.

Verdict: Leicester City to win at 13/8.

AC Oulu vs HJK Helsinki – away win with -1.5 handicap at evens.

For once, the Veikkausliiga table doesn’t lie here. AC Oulu are spiralling downwards well out of control with goals being conceded heavily against all opponents. They’ve lost six consecutive games, they’ve not scored in three of those games (two of which were in their two home games) and they’ve conceded seventeen times along the way, which is an average of nearly three goals per game. I expected this to happen to AC Oulu but I figured it would happen later in the season. I think it’s time to say goodbye to AC Oulu, basically, barring a miracle. They’re a tenacious and in-your-face side but with heads dropped and luck against them, they soon find their tactics redundant and a lack of “Plan B” for Oulu means that they’ll most likely be back in the Ykkonen very soon indeed. Five out of their past six defeats have been by two goals or more so I fancy a similar margin for them to lose by today.

The big question is how will HJK react to being dumped out of the UEFA Champions League midweek by Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade? HJK lost 3-1 in Serbia as they sat back against a fairly average Partizan side, looking more afraid than anything and thus taking little from the game. However, on their own artificial turf this week, HJK ran the show from start to finish and can consider themselves very unlucky to have somehow lost the game. Bah looked back to his best as Partizan were torn to shreds at right-back and HJK attacked with a fluidity that I’ve rarely seen from them this season despite their lofty perch in the Veikkausliiga table. The reigning champions still manage to boast an average of over two goals scored per away game and have won five out of seven on the road already this season, however, so they’re certainly a side to fear at all times. HJK ran riot at Haka in their last away game, winning 3-0, so the are capable of beating the handicap on the road. The fact that HJK have kept three clean sheets in their last three away games comforts me a great deal with my selection although to be honest, an impotent AC Oulu attack should do little damage anyway.

HJK won this fixture 2-0 at home back in May when AC Oulu were strutting their stuff as the newcomers. Now the tides have turned and AC Oulu are at the bottom of a barrel here whereas HJK are still plodding along majestically as they do so well without ever feeling the need to impress anyone as they go about their business. I think it’s fair to use a Pirates Of The Caribbean quote here by saying “You’re off the edge of the map, mate – here there be monsters!” to AC Oulu as I expect them to lose this game heavily today at generous odds of evens, although this will be one of the very few times on this site that I endorse an away win with a -1.5 goal handicap!

Verdict: HJK Helsinki to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at evens.

Auxerre vs Lorient – home win at 10/11.

Auxerre impressed with their excellent and efficient Ligue 1 displays last year and although the likes of Romanian striker Niculae moving on in summer, they still remain a strong Ligue 1 outfit. They’ve acquired former Liverpool striker Antony Le Tallec from Le Mans, Stade Malherbe de Caen midfielder Langil, Kitambala from Dijon FCO, and Johnson from Amiens SC over the summer so although there’s not much to write home about there, they have still strengthened their squad in-depth, which definitely needed doing. Auxerre were notorious last year for winning games at home by narrow margins without conceding and I expect more of the same from them this year. Little has changed at Auxerre in my eyes that could disrupt their excellent displays and they managed to flatten Lorient 4-1 here last year so they’re certainly capable of outclassing their opponents. I’m generally a big advocate of Lorient, especially at home, but the departure of star defender Koscielny and the injury to leading goalscorer Gameiro leaves Lorient looking distinctly average for today’s tough game at Auxerre. Lorient have signed Cappone from Angers SCO to replace Koscielny but he’s not the same player, nor is he good enough to be compared to him in my opinion. Lorient also waved goodbye to Vahirua, who left for Nantes in summer, who is another significant loss for Lorient. Lorient don’t travel well as it is but without those important players, I cannot envision for one moment anything but a home win in this game so the odds should be decent value today.

Verdict: Auxerre to win at 10/11.

Kyoto Sanga vs Albirex Niigata – away win at 29/20.

Four consecutive losses for Kyoto Sanga and just two wins from sixteen games suggest that J-League football may be a pleasure that they enjoy for just a little bit longer before inevitable relegation. Kyoto are the lowest scoring home side in the division with six goals scored in seven games which is primarily why they’ve lost five out of seven at home this season, conceding an average of over two goals per home game along the way. Home games were Kyoto’s strength last season but they’ve abandoned that now and look set to end their stay in the J-League very soon indeed. They’ve leaked nine goals in their past four games and the fact that they’ve not scored in any of them speaks volumes about their overall displays. Morale is low and results are poor so it’s hard to see them doing anything today.

Visitors Albirex Niigata are a somewhat frustrating away side as you know they’re capable of beating anyone on their day and yet just three wins in eight away games doesn’t fill you with confidence! Nonetheless, the low-scoring visitors are in good form at the moment with no defeats in four games since returning from the mid-season break, winning twice along the way. They’ve notched up five away goals during their two away games and two of those were in a 2-2 draw at giants Kashima Antlers so it’s wise not to underestimate Albirex Niigata here. Niigata have a terrible head-to-head record against Kyoto Sanga but to be honest, they’ll never have a better opportunity to change that than they do today with Kyoto in such a pitiful state. Albirex are the better side by some distance and the odds are good enough to take a chance on them proving it today, even if it is away from home.

Verdict: Albirex Niigata to win at 29/20.

Heerenveen vs PSV Eindhoven – away win at 3/4.

This will be a tough game for both sides and should be a low-scoring one too but you have to fancy giants PSV for this one. They’ve barely changed their squad at all over the summer so they still boast a side more than capable of winning the Eredivisie. PSV won here 3-1 last year but I’d be surprised to see that scoreline today with both sides wanting to keep it tight at the start of the Eredivisie. PSV are more than capable of dominating this game and winning by a narrow margin whereas despite the ability of Heereveen at home, I have my doubts over their ability to penetrate a solid PSV defence. Both sides have played well in their respective pre-season friendlies so both are well-prepared for this game. However, PSV simply have a better side here and I find it hard to overlook the prospect of PSV beating anyone in the Eredivisie at decent odds of 3/4 so I have to consider the away win today although caution is naturally recommended here.

Verdict: PSV Eindhoven to win at 3/4.

Sandefjord vs Rosenborg BK – half-time draw/full-time Rosenborg BK at 3/1.

I have an awful lot of faith in this bet, probably more than I should but the odds are good enough to take a chance. Sandefjord are an unbelievably stubborn side and although they’re not a particularly good side, they do generally manage to frustrate the hell out of everyone. Five out of their nine home games so far this season have been draws at half-time and they’ve only conceded four goals in their first halves in the Eliteserien this season due to compact defending. Sandefjord managed to do the exact same thing at Lerkendal against Rosenborg in the reversal of this fixture with Rosenborg needing a late second-half goal to eventually win the game. Sandefjord have no right to be on the same field as Rosenborg quality-wise but they’re still a tough nut to crack so don’t underestimate them here with heavy Rosenborg handicaps!

Rosenborg will be buoyant following their 3-0 demolition of Scandinavian rivals AIK Solna in the UEFA Champions League Qualifier mid-week so confidence is as high as ever for the reigning Eliteserien champions. They’ve won five out of nine on the road this season because they don’t concede goals but they’ve drawn four of those games because they don’t tend to score enough. Fascinatingly enough, eight out of Rosenborg’s nine away games this season have been draws at half-time so you can see why I fancy this bet so much. I have my concerns about it because Rosenborg are definitely the better of the two sides and they’re scoring goals for fun at the moment as confidence is high but frankly odds of 3/1 on this selection make it well worthy of being considered today.

Verdict: Draw at half-time, Rosenborg BK to win by full-time at 3/1.

Widzew Lodz vs Lech Poznan – away win at 11/8.

Newly-promoted Widzew Lodz are no stranger to Ekstraklasa football with their history and they should make Lech’s first Ekstraklasa game of the season as champions a hard one due to a rigid defence and some intelligent summer signings (i.e. Jop, Grzelak). Widzew have more than enough to stay in the division this year and they’re no newcomers to this league – they’ve been here many times before and should not be underestimated, especially with former Wisla Krakow defensive lynchpin Jop at the heart of their defence. However, Widew miss Robak, who is unequivocally their best striker so their threat of springing a surprise win against Lech today has faded from possibility in my eyes. Widzew also miss Ostrowski through injury too.

Lech Poznan haven’t really had the most ideal of starts to their campaign with a droll and tenacious aggregate victory over Inter Baku of Azerbaijan in the Champions League being followed by a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the Polish Super Cup against Jagiellonia Bialystok. Lech then crashed out of the Champions League over two legs against Czech giants Sparta Prague and their last match mid-week at home to Sparta became nasty at the end with red cards being handed out everywhere as Lech struggled to control their tempers. I think that largely stems from the club’s slow manner in replacing star striker Lewandowski, who has now joined BV09 Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Lech signed Wichinarek but he’s no replacement – he’s too old and slow although his experience will be invaluable for Lech. Lech have finally signed Latvian sensation Rudnevs after weeks of negotiations but alas, he is not available to play in this game today, regrettably. Lech also miss Chrapek for this game so they do have a few issues in attack today themselves.

However, man-for-man, Lech still have the better of these two sides. They still have arguably the best playmaker in the Ekstraklasa in Belarusian Sergey Krivets so writing them off would be foolish. Wichinarek is capable of doing a job against the likes of Widzew; it’s just the bigger and better sides that leaves me concerned for Lech’s attack, although that’s where Rudnevs would no doubt come in. However, I think odds of 11/8 on the away win are a bit too generous although Widew will give Lech one hell of a game today. I still think Lech can edge this with the attitional competitive match practice that they boast over their hosts and although I fear for the bet if Widzew score, I still think there’s value in the away win today.

Verdict: Lech Poznan to win at 11/8.

Gorzow Wielkopolski vs Ruch Radzionkow – home win at evens.

Gorzow started their campaign well with a 3-0 win at home against Sandejca Nowy Sacz without really breaking sweat. They were solid at home last year too but failed to find the net often enough to be a consistent threat in the division. However, on the back of a 3-0 win, you have to feel that momentum can steer them to victory today. They’re hosting newly-promoted Ruch Radzionkow who played very well in their opening Liga 1 game to claim a draw against a superior Kluczbork and they had to work very hard to get it too. If they keep that workrate up them staying in this division will be a mere formality for them. However, keeping this Gorzow side out could prove a bridge too far for the newcomers, particularly with Ruch missing Kielpin, star Slovakian newcomer Farkas, Wisniewski, Matus, and Kociczak for this game. Those players are spread all over the pitch for Ruch so it’s not just one problem area for them; it’s various problem areas. For me, the home win represents some good value at evens today although I’d leave it if the odds drop as they can be a frustrating home side sometimes, Gorzow.

Verdict: Gorzow Wielkopolski to win at evens.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Sevastopol – half-time draw/full-time Shakhtar Donetsk at 12/5.

This bet operates in a very similar fashion to the Sandefjord vs Rosenborg tip I mentioned earlier. Sevastopol are new to this division and have already proven how hard they are to beat by defending astutely. Indeed, they’ve played four games thus far in the Ukrainian Premier League and haven’t been losing at half-time in any of them, including two tough games against Metalist Kharkiv and Dynamo Kiev respectively. Sevastapol will do well to stay in this division this year because they’re not a very talented side but defending of this quality will certainly assist them in doing so. However, defending at the Donbass Arena is a nightmare if Shakhtar play as fluently as we know they’re capable of. What I’m banking on here, however, is Shakhtar stuttering at the start as they have in the majority (if not entirety) of their games so far in this campaign and being frustrated until half-time. Shakhtar lack options in the final third as their attack is somewhat one-dimensional, much like Arsenal, so defending correctly against them will yield a lot of success until the inevitable goal goes in, usually in the second-half! You can see where I am coming from with this bet though – Shakhtar are a tad rusty and Sevastapol are showing little interest in leaving their own half so backing a draw at half-time here and a home win at full-time at 13/5 could be a good bet today.

Verdict: Draw at half-time, Shakhtar Donetsk to win by full-time.
