Shakhtar Donetsk vs Volyn Lutsk

Sorry for the brief previews, guys, but I’ve just not got the time I’d like to preview so many good games!

What’s the score here? Well, Shakhtar Donetsk are very dominant in the Ukrainian Premier League and especially so at home where they can play their beautiful attacking football on the superb Donbass Arena turf and that should be the case today. Better sides than Volyn Lutsk have struggled at the Donbass as the pitch is quite a rare one in Ukraine due to its quality and that suits Shakhtar’s passing game. They have to navigate their way past the issues set in place by the UFA regarding foreigners playing in games but they should still have too much for Volyn here. Volyn battled well in the first-half of the campaign, especially so away from home, so I can understand why the odds are as generous as they are today – well, on paper at least. However, from a quality perspective, I’d thoroughly expect Shakhtar to win this game by two goals or more every day of the week and that’s my call here, effectively – Shakhtar are a lot better than Volyn.

Verdict: Shakhtar Donetsk to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 4/5.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Anderlecht vs AA Gent – lay Anderlecht at 10/11.

The wheels are rapidly falling off Anderlecht’s campaign with the sale of star playmaker Boussouffa to Anzhi Makhachkala as the side now struggles to create chances, as they indicated during a terrible display at Eupen last week. Starlet Lukaku is still in attack to boost hopes for the hosts but with Suarez and Legear both absent for this game, not to mention Kanu, I fail to see anywhere near the necessary creativity in order for Jacobs’ men to win this game. AA Gent are in great shape, especially after a Belgian Cup win against Standard de Liege a few days ago so their morale is high here. They play good football and score goals and will smell blood here with Anderlecht looking vulnerable. For me, laying Anderlecht is the way forward here.

Team news – Anderlecht miss Legear, Suarez, Deschacht, Diandy, and Kanu.

Verdict: Lay Anderlecht at 10/11.

Mechelen vs Eupen – home win at 4/6.

Mechelen are a much better side than Eupen, simply put. Mechelen don’t score enough goals in general but their defence is strong and thus that leads to their strong home record. They absolutely need a win here to have a chance of making the Champions Group so I expect a full-blooded display from the hosts. To make it more interesting, Eupen have to attack defensively-strong Mechelen to have any chance of avoiding the relegation play-off group so we should see plenty of gaps at the back and for me, the only side that can exploit those gaps efficient and consistently are Mechelen. Eupen will work hard here, no question, but Mechelen winning at 4/6 looks generous.

Verdict: Mechelen to win at 4/6.

Litex Lovech vs Lokomotiv Plovdiv – under 2.5 goals at 21/20.

Odds of 2/5 on Litex winning this game are a joke. They’re one of the best sides in Bulgaria, sure, but they’re not worth that against an arising and strong Lokomotiv Plovdiv side. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that Litex will eventually win this game but this is absolutely not the banker that it appears to be, in my view. These two sides are both defensively-orientated and although Litex have struggled to create and score chances since the departure of starlet Popov, they still bring a better threat to the opposing goal than most A PFG sides, hence their league placing. To call them potent would be a lie, however. For me, there’s not as much difference between these two sides as the odds suggest and with both sides favouring defence over attack, my call is under 2.5 goals here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 21/20.

Colo Colo vs Cobreloa – home win with -1.5 handicap at 6/5.

Colo Colo have been immaculate under Gallego lately. They’ve rediscovered their swagger and they’re scoring goals for fun, beating Santos 3-2 mid-week in the Copa Libertadores. They’ve got a lot going for them at the moment and with Cobreloa rarely travelling well and threatening the opposing goal even more rarely, I fancy Colo Colo to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at generous odds tonight.

Verdict: Colo Colo to beat the -1.5 goal handiacp at 6/5.

Union La Calera vs Audax Italiano – away win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Union La Calera have done well since promotion but they’re not a threat in front of goal. They defend well but against arguably the most potent side in Chile, that’s not going to count for a lot. Audax Italiano can score goals – and plenty of them – against anyone in Chile and I don’t see that changing tonight. If Audax score once here then I don’t see them losing the game because they’re the superior of the two sides and Union La Calera don’t score enough. Therefore, the away win with draw no bet cover appeals to me here.

Verdict: Audax Italiano to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Deportes Tolima vs Boyaca Chico – under 2.5 goals at evens.

Deportes Tolima enter this game on the back of a deflating annihlation in Brazil against Cruzeiro and picking themselves up won’t be easy. To make matters worse, they’re facing one of the hardest sides in the Primera A to beat – Boyaca Chico. The visitors aren’t particularly good nowadays but they’re physically strong and hard to break down so this isn’t the ideal opponent for a somewhat laborious Deportes Tolima, especially with morale low. For me, this game has under 2.5 goals all over it.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at evens.

AC Horsens vs Randers – away win at 7/5.

Horsens work hard and won’t lie down here but they’re not a great side; far from it. Randers were a great side a few seasons ago before diminishing into nothingness due to a lack of goal threat. They made some impressive signings in January in attack, however, and you saw the result of that in a 1-3 win at Esbjerg last week. Randers are already iron at the back; if you give them goalscoring too then you genuinely have a team here that’s capable of competing for the Superligaen title, although obviously not this season. For me, the odds on the away win here are priced more on the Randers earlier this season than the one that exists now so the odds appear generous here.

Verdict: Randers to win at 7/5.

Sunderland vs Liverpool – away win with draw no bet at 5/6.

I like backing Sunderland at home but the sale of Bent has really harmed their attack and that coupled with many long-term injuries, Sunderland’s form has taken a hefty blow and they look half the side that they were earlier this season. Bruce’s boys will work as hard as ever here, especially with most of their injured players returning. However, I just don’t see them having the firepower to beat Liverpool here, especially not after Liverpool’s lacklustre display mid-week against Sporting Braga in the UEFA Europa League indicated all too clearly that they’re prioritising the Premier League here so I think they’ll be well motivated here. Liverpool do have a few big names out themselves but the belief that Dalglish has given them should see them claim at least a draw here with the possibility of a narrow away win look increasingly likely the more I look at it. Therefore, the away win with draw no bet cover at 5/6 appeals to me here.

Team news – Sunderland miss Campbell, Meyer, and Turner whereas Liverpool miss Agger, Aurelio, Kelly, Gerrard, and Shelvey.

Verdict: Liverpool to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs Schalke 04 – home win at 4/5.

I don’t like backing Leverkusen without Barnetta but if they can’t beat this Schalke side then they all need shooting. Schalke have just parted ways with manager Magath and as such are managerless for this game, although a new manager has been appointed but won’t take over the club until next month. In addition to that, Schalke miss two of their most dangerous attacking players in Farfan and Huntelaar which effectively leaves ageing Raul on his own in attack. Although Leverkusen’s defence is positively suicidal at times, if they take the lead here then they really should hold it with such big names missing for their opponents. For me, the home win is priced generously at 4/5 with the above in mind.

Team news – Bayer 04 Leverkusen miss Friedrich and Barnetta whereas Schalke 04 miss Farfan, Huntelaar, and Pander.

Verdict: Bayer 04 Leverkusen to win at 4/5.

Fiorentina vs AS Roma – both sides to score at 4/5.

Fiorentina are playing well at the moment and Roma look unconvincing under Montella on a general basis. Roma bring good firepower to each game (although they’re without Vucinic today) and should score at least once here. However, inept defending tends to mean that they concede goals too and with Fiorentina’s lengthy injury list dwindling at long last, I think there’s a very good chance that they’ll not only score against Roma today but possibly claim three points. Either way, we should see a good game between two attacking sides and backing both sides to score at 4/5 appeals to me as a result.

Team news – Fiorentina miss Kroldrup, Frey, and Marchionni whereas AS Roma miss Cassetti and Vucinic.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 4/5.

ADO Den Haag vs AFC Ajax Amsterdam – home win with draw no bet at 7/4.

ADO did the unthinkable by winning at Ajax earlier this season; now they have the opportune moment to repeat their heroics on their own turf. They’ve had a truly magnificent season with some aggressive attacking leaves opponents floundering whilst ADO ram home the goals. ADO defend carelessly at times but they score so many goals with their Verhoek-Bulykin line of attack that it doesn’t usually matter. ADO will be highly-charged for this game, as you’d expect, and they have great motivation to attack Ajax here with the Eredivisie giants having only just returned from a long trip to Moscow in which they were destroyed by Spartak 3-0. The plastic pitch won’t have helped preparations for the game against ADO today and players may have picked up knocks ala Ebecilio, who is absent today and robs Ajax of some much needed width. Number one goalkeeper Stekelenburg is still absent and Ajax have no capable deputies. To top all that off, Ajax lack the finesse in front of goal to trouble most sides so for me, backing ADO with draw no bet cover at 7/4 looks almost a gift here.

Team news – ADO Den Haag miss N’Toko whereas AFC Ajax Amsterdam miss Vermeer, Lodeiro, Silva, El Hamdaoui, Ebecilio, and Stekelenburg.

Verdict: ADO Den Haag to win with draw no bet at 7/4.

Roda JC Kerkrade vs Feyenoord Rotterdam – away win with draw no bet at 5/4.

I think it’s time to back Feyenoord again now. Their kids have finally grown adjusted to one another and the side is playing well as a unit, especially with starlet Castaignos leading the line. They’ve been playing really well lately and even claimed their first away win of the season so with the monkey off their backs now, I think Feyenoord can now start to be a threat away from home again. Roda have suffered lately with poor form so they’re the ideal opponent for Feyenoord to face. For me, the energetic Feyenoord winning this game with draw no bet cover at 5/4 represents value today as Roda aren’t scoring goals and aren’t winning games so that’s my call here.

Team news – Rodc JC Kerkrade miss Lachambre, Kah, and Huysegems whereas Feyenoord Rotterdam miss Tomasson, Cisse, Schenkeveld, Fernandez, Schaken, Aussar, Bruins, Van Haaren, and De Vrij.

Verdict: Feyenoord Rotterdam to win with draw no bet at 5/4.

Brann Bergen vs Rosenborg BK – away win at 4/5.

Rosenborg have long been better than Brann now and I don’t expect to see any difference tonight. Rosenborg parted with players over the window, it’s true – they’ll miss the likes of Annan a lot over the course of the season – but Rosenborg actually have replacements. Brann parted with star attacker Huseklepp over the window and have failed to replace him and considering that he carried Brann last season, they look to be in for a long and disappointing season to me. Therefore, the away win at 4/5 appeals to me here, rivalry though there undoubtedly is.

Verdict: Rosenborg BK to win at 4/5.

Cerro Porteno vs Sportivo Luqueno – HT/FT Cerro Porteno/Cerro Porteno at 5/6.

No other side in the Division Profesional have been losing at half-time more than Sportivo Luqueno this season and against arguably the best side in Paraguay at the moment, I suspect this game may bring about a similar occurence. Cerro Porteno are a very good attacking side that score goals for fun and I don’t expect to see anything but that tonight with no Copa Libertadores games approaching to rest players for. Bizarrely, Cerro are yet to win a home game this season domestically but that should change against an inferior Luqueno side tonight. Luqueno can score goals, hence me avoiding the handicap, but I think Cerro have enough power in attack to score before half-time and hold it in one way or another, especially now that Cerro have the additional motivation of proving themselves against the press, who recently accused Cerro’s players of going out drinking after the game with Olimpia Asuncion and not paying their bills. As a result, Cerro have now refused to speak to the media, sparking controversy around Paraguay but you can rest assured that the hosts will want to prove themselves tonight as they strenuously deny all claims made by the media.

Verdict: HT/FT Cerro Porteno/Cerro Porteno at 5/6.

Polonia Bytom vs Wisla Krakow – away win at evens.

Big quality difference here. Wisla disappointed mid-week in the Puchar Polski, crashing out to Liga 1 outfit Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala over two legs but in the Ekstraklasa, they’re on fire at the moment and are obviously aiming for the title. They know that they’re better than relegation-threatened Polonia Bytom and despite missing defender Bunoza, I have to fancy them to do well here as they should be too good for their hosts. Polonia have question marks over Tyminski’s eligibility to even play for them and although the decision on that front won’t be made until next week, it’s sure to affect their camp as he’s their best player. They also miss defender Hricko so things are far from good in the Polonia camp and thus evens on the away win looks appealing here.Team news – Polonia Bytom miss Hricko and Killar whereas Wisla Krakow miss Bunoza and Boguski.Verdict: Wisla Krakow to win at evens.

Warta Poznan vs GKS Katowice – home win at evens.

Katowice are playing well at the moment but they’re still inferior to Warta, in my view. Warta made some very good signings in the transfer window and it’s shown lately with a lot more potency in front of goal and generally more attractive football. There’s some distance for Warta to go yet but odds of evens on them beating an inferior Katowice side appeals to me today.

Verdict: Warta Poznan to win at evens.

Amkar Perm’ vs Lokomotiv Moscow – home win with draw no bet at 6/4.

Amkar may have lost old target man Kushev over the transfer window, which does damage their attack, but they’re still a decent side. They like to pretend that they’re a mini Rubin-Kazan’ by controlling games and keeping sides out without scoring many themselves and that’s generally made Perm a very hard away game in recent years, with today being no exception. Amkar are a decent side and Lokomotiv are somewhat overrated here, in my view. They lost coach Semin over the transfer window, which will hurt them. They also lost Aliev during that period too, and given that he carried Lokomotiv away from home last season, I think they’re in for a very difficult game here. For me, there’s value in the Amkar win with draw no bet cover, especially with Lokomotiv still attempting to integrate their new signings.

Verdict: Amkar Perm’ to win with draw no bet at 6/4.

Sporting Gijon vs Almeria – over 2.5 goals at 23/20.

Gijon miss their best defender for this game and Almeria are scoring goals for fun. This game is very important in the relegation battle and both sides need points and based on the recent displays from both teams, over 2.5 goals is a very realistic possibility here.

Team news – Sporting Gijon miss Sastre and Jose Angel.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 23/20.

Deportivo La Coruna vs Levante – home win at evens.

Riazor is no place for little Levante today, in my view. Deportivo are still looking strong in all areas of the field and they tend to play very well at home. Levante usually steal a token goal from their away games and they may do so today but Depor are a lot better than they are at the moment, especially with Guardado and Riki back in busniess. With the above in mind, I can’t help but feel that Deportivo are priced rather generously at evens here.

Team news – Deportivo La Coruna miss Valeron and Xisco whereas Levante miss Del Horno, Robuste, and Sergio.

Verdict: Deportivo La Coruna to win at evens.

Racing Santander
vs Real Sociedad – home win at evens.

Sociedad are really missing Llorente with battling Tamudo a decent replacement but lacking in Llorente’s predatory instinct. Santander under Marcelino are hard enough to face but without your best player, it becomes very hard indeed. Santander are rock solid at the back and if they convert one of the inevitable chances that they’ll get then they should win this game as Sociedad are very much hopeless away from home, irrespective of Santander not being light years away from San Sebastian.

Team news – Racing Santander miss Tziolis, Serrano, and Henrqiue whereas Real Sociedad miss Llorente.

Verdict: Racing Santander to win at evens.

Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Villarreal CF – both sides to score at 4/5.

A lot of people are going for the Bilbao win here but I don’t buy it. These two sides play funny games whenever they meet with plenty of good football and goals but El Submarino Amarillo tend to emerge victorious from these games. I don’t know if they’ll manage it at the daunting San Mames without Senna and Nilmar but Bilbao have demonstrated that they can be breached lately due to constant changes by Caparros in the centre-back department so I think Villarreal will score here. There aren’t many games where Bilbao don’t score at home though and with Llorente in such fine form, I think backing both sides to score here represents more value than entering the 1×2 market.

Team news – Villarreal CF miss Nilmar and Senna.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 4/5.

Valencia CF vs Sevilla CF – under 2.5 goals at evens.

Can’t score vs won’t score! Sevilla line up defensively under Manzano and Valencia lack incision in attack more often than not. In the past, this would have been a nailed-on over 2.5 goals game for me but having watched both sides lately, I’d be surprised to see this game end anything but under 2.5 goals.

Team news – Valencia CF miss Moya, Madura, and Albelda whereas Sevilla CF miss Acosta, Kone, and Guarente.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at evens.

Young Boys Bern vs Luzern – home win at 4/5.

Artificial turf, home advantage, better players. If YBB take the chances that they’ll inevitably get then they should win this game although I expect plenty of goals from both sides along the way.

Team news – Young Boys Bern miss Dussin, Schneuwly, and Doubai.

Verdict: Young Boys Bern to win at 4/5.

Servette vs Delemont – home win at 4/5.

Servette are simply better than newly-promoted Delemont, in a nutshell. The visitors have done well this season but they’re not a match for Servette, in my view. Again, I think these odds have been priced based on the Challenge League standings rather than the quality differential so my call is the home win for a vastly superior Servette side today.

Team news – Servette miss Varela.

Verdict: Servette to win at 4/5.

Bucaspor vs Sivasspor – away win with draw no bet at evens.

Well, Bucaspor can’t play without Musa in their team and although Sivasspor will struggle without Kadir, the superb Grosicki gives them a chance against anyone, in my view, and especially in this key relegation six-pointer against newly-promoted Bucaspor. For me, Sivasspor has better players than Bucaspor and they’ve played really well lately but have been rather unfortunate. Today’s as good a day as any for that fortune to change with Sivasspor scoring goals at long last and with their hosts generally finding goals hard to come by, it’s hard to take them seriously here, especially with Musa out for the game. For me, there’s value on Sivasspor winning this game with draw no bet cover as I simply feel they’re a better team than Bucaspor.

Team news – Bucaspor miss Musa whereas Sivasspor miss Kadir.

Verdict: Sivasspor to win with draw no bet at evens.
