Sheffield Wednesday vs Peterborough United

Free

Today’s featured game is the English Championship game between Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough United. Hosts Sheffield Wednesday have had an atrocious season so far but a parting of ways with ex-boss Brian Laws has breathed new life into the team and they’re now unbeaten in three games. Peterborough United have struggled all season long and don’t look likely to change their ways today with yet another difficult opponent in their midst.

Hosts Sheffield Wednesday are now unbeaten in three games and have won their last two consecutively. What is most impressive about those two wins, however, was the fact that both were on the road against difficult sides – a Blackpool side that are only good at home and a local rival Barnsley, who were on a lengthy unbeaten run before their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. What I like about this “new look” Sheffield Wednesday is that they’re back to scoring goals. They’ve notched up six goals in their last three Championship games, which is an average of two goals scored per game. Although Sheffield Wednesday have conceded in all of those games, they’ve still emerged victorious in two of them so are looking potent and have gathered some strong momentum. I’m taking a bit of a risky by disregarding the remainder of Sheffield Wednesday’s statistics for their home form etc. this season but I strongly believe that their momentum will give them all that they need in today’s game.

Visitors Peterborough United are bottom of the table and their league placing has barely fluctuated throughout the season as they continue to face the fact that they are not good enough to be in the Championship. A few of their players are good enough to make it but ultimately it’s not enough to survive in this barren wilderness known as the Championship. Peterborough have lost eight out of twelve away games already this season and concede nearly two goals per away game on average. Peterborough are the lowest scoring away side in the division which is largely why they’re the only side in the division yet to win away from home.

Verdict: Sheffield Wednesday to win at 5/6.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Anorthosis Famagusta vs Omonia Nicosia – home win at 11/10.

Hosts Anorthosis Famagusta enter this game on the back of five straight wins. They’ve scored an average of over two goals per game on that run and have only conceded once, which shows great potency and defensive prowess, something indicated very well on their tricky trip to AEL Limassol last match. Anorthosis will need all of these bonuses as they take on fellow Cypriot giants Omonia Nicosia as they enter this game with a horrendous head-to-head record of just one win in their last nine meetings at either ground.

Visitors Omonia Nicosia have been relatively consistent of late but they’re still showing signs of weakness with three wins in five games, losing once and drawing once. An unconvincing performance at Ethnikos Achnas lately saw them succumb to a 2-1 defeat and since then Omonia Nicosia managed a heroic and yet unconvincing 4-3 win over APEP at home despite being three goals behind at one point. Basically, Omonia are stuttering a little and whereas there’s only so much a giant can actually stutter, Omonia are looking somewhat unconvincing entering this game, basically.

Although this will undoubtedly be a close game between two out of Cyprus’ “big three”, I still feel that there’s value on the home win given momentum at the present time so would recommend taking Anorthosis to win.

Verdict: Anorthosis Famagusta to win at 10/11.

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich – away win at 5/4.

Hosts Werder Bremen are in the unusual position of not having won in their past five Bundesliga games. They drew their first two of these five and have lost three times consecutively since then. The most worrying factor for Werder surely has to be that they’ve not managed to score a single goal in their last three Bundesliga games because they’re good enough to do despite having faced some good opponents. Werder have a tough run of games and there’s not many tougher games than Bayern Munich at the moment, which is who they’re facing today! Werder haven’t beaten Bayern at home since 2006, losing twice and drawing once along the way so to say Werder aren’t looking in the best shape possible for this game would be something of an understatement, in my opinion.

Visitors Bayern Munich appear to finally have grasped their potential and turned it into actuality. They’ve won five consecutive Bundesliga games in emphatic style and can finally begin to claim the title of the “best side in Germany” once again. Bayern Munich average scoring two goals per game, which is the highest goalscoring ratio in the division. They’ve won four out of eight away games this season already and boast a good record in Bremen so will be brimming with confidence and momentum entering this game so stand a good chance of claiming three points.

With Werder playing goal-shy football and Bayern on fire, you have to feel that the odds on the away win are something of a bargain today despite both sides being very good sides in the Bundesliga.

Verdict: Bayern Munich to win at 5/4.

Hertha BSC Berlin vs Borussia Moenchengladbach – home win at 10/11.

Hosts Hertha BSC Berlin have finally started to become a force again in the Bundesliga despite being bottom of the table. They’ve only lost once in their last three games and even managed a rare win in their last game on their slow ascent away from the relegation zone. The momentum gained from this win should serve Hertha well and it frankly should be enough to see them take three points today as we all know that they’ve got the quality at their disposal to do so.

Visitors Borussia Moenchengladbach naturally play their part in this bet by being one of the worst away sides in the Bundesliga this year with six defeats in nine games. They average conceding over two goals per away game and currently find themselves somewhat short on momentum following three defeats in their past four games. The visitors have lost their last two away games consecutively and have averaged conceding over two goals per game in their last four games. Although Borussia Moenchengladbach are far from the goal-shy side that you’d expect from a team in their current league placing, the fact remains that Hertha will have few easier home games this season and really should make it count with the quality at the disposal and the wind in their sails.

Verdict: Hertha BSC Berlin to win at 10/11.

Asteras Tripolis vs Panionios – home win at 13/10.

Hosts Asteras Tripolis are having a good season thus far and are currently fifth in the Super League with three wins in their last five games. They’ve only been beaten twice at home all season and have won four out of their nine home games, drawing the other three. Asteras Tripolis tend to rely on their efficiency rather than their flambuoyancy which is why they only score a few more at home than they concede on average. Asteras Tripolis have won three out of their last four home games and haven’t conceded a single goal in any of those games, which needless to say leaves them in a great position momentum-wise for this game.

I think it’s fair to say that Panionios are marginally the better side but they’ve really not shown it lately. Indeed, Panionios are now without a win in their past five Super League games, a run which has seen them slip to eighth in the Super League table. Panionios have scored five goals in those five games but have still drawn three times and lost twice, thus indicating that they’re not scoring enough goals and they’re defending poorly. Panionios were extremely fortunate to pull two late goals back at home to Levadiakos in their last Super League game to draw the encounter but Asteras Tripolis will provide a far more stentorian test for the visitors today than minnows Levadiakos could.

With the hosts boasting some momentum today and the visitors suffering at both ends of the field, you have to feel that the odds on a home win here show some value today.

Verdict: Asteras Tripolis to win at 13/10.

Aldershot Town vs Bournemouth – home win at 6/5.

Aldershot Town have been a prestigious home side in this division for a couple of years now and people are beginning to worry about their away trips here, and well they should! Only one side has won away against Aldershot in twelve League Two games this season with Aldershot winning seven times and drawing four times along the way. Aldershot average scoring over two goals per home game and have only been beaten once in their last five games, winning three times and drawing once. With a strong home advantage and some good momentum to boot, it seems a fair shot that Aldershot will turn up today and make life hard for their more illustrious visitors.

Bournemouth may be second in the table but this position is masquerading the fact that they’re not playing good football of late. They’ve lost their last two games consecutively and both in disappointing fashion as they lost at home to Bury and Northampton Town respectively. Even Bournemouth’s win prior to those games was an unconvincing home win over newly-promoted Torquay United so I think it’s fair to say that the south coast club are not firing on all cylinders at all. Bournemouth’s record on the road is one of the best in League Two but if they’re not playing good football then they’re frankly a target for the vast majority of capable sides in this division and Aldershot certainly fall under this banner.

Although this is undoubtedly a risky call with Bournemouth being the better of these two sides, you have to feel that there’s enough in favour of Aldershot to make the odds on a home win good value today.

Verdict: Aldershot Town to win at 6/5.

Lincoln City vs Bradford City – home win at 6/4.

Chris Sutton’s Lincoln City are on a bit of a roll at the moment with just one defeat in their past four games and two consecutive wins leading into this game. Wins away to Barnet and at home to Chesterfield both command a certain level of respect as Lincoln gradually climb away from the relegation zone. The momentum taken from those two wins will be strong so they stand a good chance of increasing their record of home wins from four out of twelve to five out of fifteen.

Visitors Bradford City are certainly playing their part in this bet by simply being easy to beat. I have no doubt in my head whatsoever that Bradford are the better of these two sides but you’d be hard pushed to explain that having seen some of Bradford’s latest performances. The visitors have now lost three out of their last four games, drawing the other encounter. Bradford have averaged conceding over two goals per game in those four games and their lack of momentum will only assist the detrimental aspects of their performances, thus leaving Bradford in a “Catch 22” scenario.

Although Bradford have a decent away record in League Two this year, their performances and results of late have done little to convince me of their potential. Indeed, all their performances have served in my eyes is to prove how capable they are of losing to sides not as good as them – enter Lincoln City. The hosts will do well to stay up this season and they know it so strong momentum for the home side should be the key factor here today.

Verdict: Lincoln City to win at 6/4.

Catania vs Parma home win at 5/4.

Hosts Catania are on a good run of form by their standards. They’ve been beaten just once in their last four games and have won twice and drawn once along the way. Catania’s problem this season has been scoring goals but this problem has been alleviated somewhat with four goals scored in their last four Serie A games. Catania have even managed a heroic win away at Juventus, a result which will have boosted their morale massively at the time and has carried Catania since then. Despite being second from bottom in Serie A currently, Catania have only lost four home games this season and are amongst the lower conceding sides on their own turf. The fact remains that Catania are the lowest scoring side at home in Serie A but recent form and momentum should hopefully make that statistic utterly irrelevant ahead of today’s game.

Visitors Parma have stumbled massively of late despite making a tremendous start to life in Serie A following promotion from Serie B last season. Parma are now beginning to look somewhat fragile with no wins in their past four games whilst looking more like a Serie B side by losing three of those games. I can accept the defeat against Juventus or the defeat against Roma but losing at little Livorno is frankly unforgivable when you consider the talent that Parma have at their disposal so it’s more than clear that Parma simply aren’t producing the goods at the moment. With five defeats in ten away games already this season, Parma’s away form is beginning to look very mediocre indeed, particularly with an average of just under two goals conceded per away game.

All in all, a goal-shy Catania should have the chances to score goals against a weak Parma defence today and the sharp contrast in momentum between th two sides should leave little Catania with enough of an advantage today to make the home win a good value bet today.

Verdict: Catania to win at 5/4.

Juventus vs AS Roma – away win at 19/10.

Hosts Juventus have gone right off the rails of late with four defeats in their last five games. Juventus’ problems are largely attributed to the number of strikers available to them i.e. very few indeed, which is why Juventus have only scored three goals in their last four games. Defeats against Chievo Verona and Catania will have hurt Juventus for obvious reasons but they simply don’t seem able to drag themselves through this difficult time and look more likely to lose a game each time I see them play. Juventus’ home record isn’t as good as you’d think it would be with just five wins in ten home games this season with a rather large number of goals conceded when compared to other sides of a similar quality level so I think alarm bells should really be starting to ring for the Turin-based outfit unless the tides change rapidly.

Visitors AS Roma have an absolutely atrocious head-to-head record against Juventus. Roma haven’t won at Juventus since a Coppa Italia game in 2006 but haven’t beaten Juventus in Serie A whatsoever since 2004. Roma’s last away win at Juventus in Serie A came in 2001 but it’s definitely fair to say that Juventus have had the lion’s share of wins of late having won all four of their last four meetings at either ground. However, this Roma side is different; they’re capable of upsetting the odds. Roma have become more workmanlike under boss Claudio Ranieri and it’s working to their advantage with no defeats in ten Serie A games, winning seven times along the way. Roma’s 3-0 demolition of Genoa last match will have done much to prove how serious the Romans are about launching a late title challenge.

Despite Roma’s atrocious head-to-head record and poor away form this season, you have to fancy them to cause a lot of problems for an out-of-sorts and injury-hit Juventus. Roma boss Claudio Ranieri knows all about his former team’s tactics so Roma do have yet another advantage there as well as their dominating momentum and efficient style of football. With the above in mind, you have to feel that there could be value in the away win today.

Verdict: AS Roma to win at 19/10.

Albinoleffe vs Cittadella – home win at evens.

Albinoleffe are back in business with no defeats in five games, drawing once but winning their last four Serie B games consecutively. It’s about time Albinoleffe showed their true potential again so I’m pleased to see it happening. Albinoleffe’s strength has been in defence of late with just two goals conceded in their last five games. That said, however, Albinoleffe have scored nine goals along the way so they’re not short of potency either. Impressive wins at Padova and Vicenza in recent times will have only increased the ever-strengthening momentum that northern Italians Albinoleffe currently possess. A poor start to their Serie B campaign has left Albinoleffe with unflattering statistics regarding their home form but their actual quality level is something that has never been in doubt and should be all too visible today whilst coupled with their impressive run of momentum.

Visitors Cittadella have already lost six out of eleven away games in Serie B this season so look prime candidates to lose the majority of their away games with this game being included in that majority. Cittadella have actually only lost once in their last five games so they’re not short on momentum themselves either currently. However, despite their last two home games against Brescia and Torino respectively (both of which are poor travelling sides), I think it’s fair to say that Cittadella haven’t really been tested sufficiently yet. However, the visitors now face an arduous task in the lion’s den as they take on an emphatic and driven Albinoleffe.

With the hosts boasting such a great run of form and highly impressive defensive and attacking records, it’s hard to see Albinoleffe not winning this game today against poor travellers Cittadella.

Verdict: Albinoleffe to win at evens.

Grosseto vs Triestina – home win at 10/11.

Hosts Grosseto have already won six out of eleven home games this season, drawing four times and losing just once along the way. They average scoring just under two goals per home game and have won three out of their last five games, losing just once. Grosseto have won three out of their last four games, drawing the other game but claiming the scalps of promotion rivals Ancona and Empoli along the way. The hosts enjoy a good style of attacking football although that can occasionally be their downfall with mediocre defending leading to disastrous results i.e. the 4-1 thrashing at out-of-form Torino last match. However, Grosseto have some momentum to work with and always manage to score goals so with their home advantage to hand you have to feel that they’re capable of taking three points today.

Visitors Triestina have lost three out of their last four games and currently linger just outside of the Serie B relegation zone. Triestina and Salernitana are the only two sides in Serie B that are yet to win an away game and with Triestina having lost five out of their ten away games already, it’s hard to see the record changing anytime soon. Triestina don’t concede an awful lot of goals but they do have great problems when it comes to scoring goals on the road, something they’ve only managed to do seven times this season, which is a lot less than the majority of Serie B sides this year.

With a clash of momentum and goalscoring potency between these two sides today, you have to feel that the value is with Grosseto in the home win.

Verdict: Grosseto to win at 10/11.

Heracles Almelo vs Vitesse Arnhem – home win at 5/6.

Hosts Heracles Almelo continue to confound us all with their impressive Eredivisie campaign. They’re currently fifth in the table and have won four consecutive games. They’re far from a prolific side but they’re a ruthlessly efficient side and always seem to manage to score one more goal than their plucky opponents. Heracles have been strong at home this season with five wins in nine games and have won their last four home games consecutively so are well-placed for this game today.

Visitors Vitesse Arnhem have lost three out of their last five games, winning just once along the way. Vitesse have lost their last six away games consecutively, which takes their tally to a highly unimpressive but consistent seven defeats in nine away games. Vitesse average conceding nearly two goals per away game and can thank their lucky stars that Willem II, RKC Waalwijk, and Sparta Rotterdam are in the division or they’d be the lowest scoring away side in the Eredivisie. I think it’s fair to say that Vitesse bring on their problems on their own and the fact that they’ve conceded eleven goals in their past five games illustrates that point perfectly.

I actually don’t believe there to be a class difference between these two sides but Heracles’ strong momentum and Vitesse’s leaky defence should form a lethal combination that results in a comfortable home win today.

Verdict: Heracles Almelo to win at 5/6.

Sporting Covilha vs Varzim – home win at 6/5.

Hosts Sporting Covilha are on a run of four games without a win but I feel that their luck is due to change today. Why? Well, Sporting Covilha are definitely a home side and they’re playing at home today, which naturally helps. However, the overwhelming factor that backs up my call today is that Sporting Covilha have scored more home goals than any other side in the Liga de Honra this season. Sporting Covilha actually average scoring two goals per home game so I think it’s fair to say that they’ve got every chance of winning every home game with that kind of record in their arsenal. Sporting have already won three out of eight home games this season and although they’re battling bravely against relegation currently, everyone in the Liga de Honra knows full well that Sporting are too good to be where they are and it’s unlikely to last if they continue their impressive level of potency in front of goal.

Visitors Varzim are the lowest scoring side in the Liga de Honra and have gone without a win in their past seven games, which is largely why they’re currently in the relegation zone. Varzim enjoy their fair share of 0-0 draws, which does help them but also hinders them in the sense that their strikers are forgetting how to score goals. Varzim have scored just one goal in their past five Liga de Honra games and although they’ve not conceded excessively, logic dictates that they’re going to lose more than they’re going to win if they’re not scoring goals.

With Varzim having already lost four out of eight away games this season and being the lowest goalscoring side in the division, it’s very difficult for me to consider them leaving Covilha with anything but a defeat as they take on the most potent home side in the division.

Verdict: Sporting Covilha to win at 6/5.

Motherwell vs St.Mirren – home win at 5/6.

Hosts Motherwell have finally ended their barren run of form by beating Kilmarnock convincingly away from home. Whereas this doesn’t solve all of Motherwell’s problems, it does lend them some momentum to take into this very winnable game against minnows St.Mirren today. Motherwell’s home form is far from conclusive with three wins, three draws, and three defeats in nine home Premier League games this season but one thing that is certain is that Motherwell are capable of being a considerable way higher up the table than they currently are and their win at Kilmarnock last match emphasised that point all too well.

The above is not enough on its own, however; enter St.Mirren, the Premier League’s worst away side. They’ve lost seven out of nine away games this season and are one of the bigger conceders in the division when playing away from home. St.Mirren have lost their last two away games consecutively without even scoring a goal so they’ll be on a bit of a downer for this game. Although St.Mirren have knocked up a couple of wins of late, they’ve been claiming their points at home and really struggling on the road. Nonetheless, this particular tactic – or lack of – plays right into our hands today as they take on a rejuvenated and confident Motherwell side away from home.

Although this has the potential to be an incredibly boring game, I feel there’s enough momentum in the Motherwell camp for them to awaken their ability and enable them to take three points today against a poor travelling St.Mirren side.

Verdict: Motherwell to win at 5/6.

Sevilla CF vs Almeria – lay Sevilla CF at 17/10.

Sevilla CF have now lost four consecutive Primera Liga games and despite the ability that we all know they have, they’re simply not showing it currently. The defeats against Atletico Madrid and Barcelona respectively I can understand but the two defeats at home by Getafe and Racing Santander are totally unacceptable for a club of Sevilla’s size and stature. Sevilla simply aren’t scoring enough goals, something that is very hard to say about them but is nonetheles very accurate indeed, worryingly. Sevilla have only scored twice in their last three home games in all competitions and have lost all three games so their confidence and momentum have both taken hefty knocks ahead of tonight’s game against a feisty Almeria side. Sevilla have only won four out of nine home games in the Primera Liga this season and their form doesn’t look likely to change without mass improvements in the near future because Almeria will make life very tough for them indeed tonight.

As I briefly mentioned above, Almeria’s tactics are to get into the faces of their opponents and hopefully force a mistake out of them. Of late, Almeria’s tactics have worked well with just one defeat in their past five games, drawing three times and winning once. Almeria claime a particularly impressive draw at Villarreal of late, which indicates that they are capable of frustrating some of the bigger names in the division despite not being able to compete with them skill-wise on any part of the field. Ultimately Almeria don’t score enough goals to be a potent threat to any side but they have a lot of momentum in their arsenal at the moment and have scored in four out of their last five games so why not today? Sevilla have proven that they cannot defend of late and that their goalscoring is low so Almeria will surely smell blood and gain extra motivation from it?

I’ve no doubt that this is my riskiest call of the day but you have to feel that there’s value in it. Almeria love being a nuisance to big sides and are even more motivated when they know that the side in question are not playing well. I don’t doubt that Sevilla are twice the side that Almeria are and that they’re capable of showing it but I just don’t think that they’ve got enough in their favour to do so tonight.

Verdict: Lay Sevilla CF at 17/10.

Atenas vs Defensor Sporting – away win at 10/11.

Hosts Atenas have struggled to adapt to life in the Primera Division following promotion last season and finished second from bottom in the Apertura as a result. They lost a massive eleven games out of fifteen, which naturally isn’t good enough, particularly when married up with the fact that they only won twice in the whole of the Apertura, so I think it’s fair to say that Atenas are in for yet another difficult campaign. Atenas were the lowest scoring side in the Apertura and their quality level has not increased over the break so I can only expect them to be cannon fodder for the rest of the teams in the Clausura unless proven otherwise!

Defensor Sporting are one of Uruguay’s footballing giants and should be able to smell Atenas’ blood a mile off currently. Defensor Sporting won eight out of fifteen Apertura games and only eventual winners Club Nacional de Montevideo managed to win as many away games as they did with five wins apiece. Defensor Sporting only lost one away game in the Apertura and averaged scoring over two goals per game on the road, a record matched only by rivals Penarol. Regardless of the above information and statistics, Defensor Sporting are simply twice as good as Atenas and I can see no reason whatsoever as to why that shouldn’t be massively applicable tonight.

Verdict: Defensor Sporting to win at 10/11.
