Today’s secondary featured game is the International U21 Friendly between Sweden and Serbia in Scandinavia.
Hosts Sweden U21 enter this game on the back of a 0-2 derby win at Norway U21 so morale is good at the moment. Promising strikers Guidetti, Rexhepi, Armenteros, and defender Magyar have been drafted into the Sweden U21 team since their win at Norway to freshen up their attack line. Guidetti will be particularly welcome back as arguably Sweden’s best striker following his recent illness. They’ve lost their most experienced midfielder Hamad through injury and have some doubts over Johansson too, which are blows, admittedly. However, they’ve got decent replacements in midfield for those two and with such dangerous strikers in their squad ala Guidetti, Jonsson, Rexhepi etc. and even Celik, who scored two goals on his debut against Norway U21, I have to fancy Sweden to do well today. They beat Serbia 3-1 when the two sides last met in the UEFA European U21 Championships when they were held in Sweden and I think they can reproduce the heroics today that steered them to victory in that game a year or two ago, even without Toivonen and Berg!
Helpfully, Serbia U21 have five players away with the national team as their “test squad” faces an away game with Australia tomorrow so that means their U21 side today will be devoid of Ljajic, Petkovic, Subotic, Rajkovic, and Obradovic, all of which robs their fairly vulnerable defence of any presentable stability whatsoever. The absence of Ljajic removes a great creator in their midst and I think those absences will do terrific damage here. Serbia’s defence concedes a lot of goals anyway but their strength is usually scoring goals to counter that, which will be beyond difficult without Ljajic. Serbia U21 still have some good players, make no mistake of that. However, is it a side really capable of getting a result here without the afore-mentioned players? Not for my money.
This game is not a banker; remember that it’s a friendly. However, the odds on Sweden beating a depleted Serbia side with fresh strikers in their ranks appeals to me at 11/10, especially whilst they’re playing at home. Therefore, my call is a Sweden U21 win today.
