General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Vitesse Arnhem vs Fortuna Sittard

KO: (UK time)

Vitesse Arnhem’s general apathy and lack of consistency in the final third tends to put me off them nowadays. For all of their financial backing, and the ‘agreement’ they have with Chelsea for some of their best youngsters, Vitesse Arnhem seldom impress me. However, They’ve done well on a surprisingly consistent basis this season though, and rock-bottom Fortuna Sittard are not likely to put a spoke in the wheels because of a lack of quality in controlling games. I’m quietly confident that they’ll give Vitesse Arnhem a good game here, but I still expect a home win.

Verdict: Vitesse Arnhem to win at 33/100.

Ludogorets Razgrad vs Botev Vratsa

KO: (UK time)

I still don’t like where Ludogorets Razgrad are at, but overcoming Botev Vratsa should not be problematic for them here. I don’t expect it to be clean cut, mind you. The reigning champions are very lazy, and their opponents have a deceptively dangerous attack. I expect a home win though.

Verdict: Ludogorets Razgrad to win at 1/5.

Olympique Lyonnais vs Stade de Reims

KO: (UK time)

Although the skeptic in me still doubts how long this Olympique Lyonnais can truly last for, I must confess that this has been the most impressed I’ve been with them for at least a decade now. They’ve got a lot right off the pitch, not that their fans will credit Garcia with anything – they still maintain it’s Juninho’s influence. Whatever the case may be there, Olympique Lyonnais are signing the right players to ensure that this team can be smarter tactically, and far more convincing in physical encounters. They’re not perfect, Olympique Lyonnais, but I really do like what they’ve done, and I expect them to get back to being a top French team in the years to come – if Aulas keeps his patience. I also expect them to win today against Stade de Reims, who have finally started to show just how good their attack actually is, but still aren’t defending well enough.

Verdict: Olympique Lyonnais to win at 2/5.

Banker

AS Monaco vs Nimes Olympique

KO: (UK time)

My natural instinct is to doubt AS Monaco but even with the likes of Lecomte and Ben Yedder out, the simple truth of the matter is that their opponents are without a lot of players at the moment. AS Monaco may not have played especially well in their win against Paris Saint-Germain, especially not in the first-half, but they at least came out fighting in the second-half. If they can recapture that tenacity and belief today, then they’ll beat Nimes Olympique without too many problems.

Verdict: AS Monaco to win at 33/100.

Banker

Spartak Moscow vs Rotor Volgograd

KO: (UK time)

The absence of full-back Ayrton put me off backing the handicap here, much as though the capital club are currently capable of covering it against a Rotor Volgograd side struggling to integrate its newbies. Ayrton has played a huge part in Spartak Moscow’s attacking prowess this season, and cannot be easily replaced. I still think Spartak Moscow have enough about them to win this game but I’ll steer clear of any handicaps for now.

Verdict: Spartak Moscow to win at 33/100.

Banker

Slavia Prague vs Zbrojovka Brno

KO: (UK time)

Slavia Prague should have too much for Zbrojovka Brno here. They’ve got a big enough squad to rotate accordingly, and their opponents shouldn’t be good enough to trouble them. I expect a home win here, albeit likely to be a narrow one.

Verdict: Slavia Prague to win at 3/25.

Banker

PSV Eindhoven vs Sparta Rotterdam

KO: (UK time)

I’m expecting a really good game here because Sparta Rotterdam never play with any kind of fear, even against the Netherlands’ elite clubs. They’re going to have a damn good go here, and that means either a high-scoring draw, or a complete massacre; it’s a coin toss. With PSV Eindhoven in ‘ruthless’ mode in front of goal at Eredivisie level though, I have to trust in the home side doing enough to win this one.

Verdict: PSV Eindhoven to win at 1/4.

Featured game

Racing Club Lens vs Angers SCO

KO: (UK time)

Angers SCO seldom leave away games without bagging at least once. They seldom have the organisation to be trusted to get a positive result away from home, but they’re athletic enough to counterattack effectively the majority of the time. It’d be interesting to see what happened if they were able to actually control games once in a while. That’s not going to happen whilst they part ways with the likes of Santamaria as readily as they did though, even if they did recoup a reasonable transfer fee for him.

They sure are entertaining though, Angers SCO, and they never give up – that’s what I like about them. Well, it’s one of the numerous things I like about them actually. The thing I like best is that, despite seldom spending much money, Angers SCO always seem to find life comfortable at this level, and have done ever since they were promoted. It’s a very well-ran club with a good scouting network, and a real feelgood element to them. They’re not a team that should be underestimated, Angers SCO, although any team that can hold its own tactically will trouble them.

I would not hesitate in saying that newly-promoted Racing Club Lens hold the high ground here, at least when it comes to tactics. They’re a very hard side to play against, as numerous Ligue 1 sides have discovered this season. Given how much they spent pre-season though, that cannot be considered a surprise. Racing Club Lens are good enough to outsmart Angers SCo here, basically. Are they good enough to outscore them, though? That remains to be seen. They could do, but having seen how they disappointingly folded against FC Nantes Atlantique at home mid-week, I’m not prepared to invest any money in that outcome.

With all of their attackers now back though, it’s fair to say that Racing Club Lens are back to being a threat in front of goal once more – that much has not changed. Angers SCO are not good at keeping teams out so it’s hard to imagine the home team ending this one without bagging. I mean, Angers SCO won’t lose many one-on-one battles at the back because they’re either athletes or butchers, but they’re not particularly smart so some intricate final third passing from the likes of Kakuta should ensure that Racing Club Lens have every conceivable opportunity to score at least once tonight.

Still, Angers SCO have been good away from home this season; curiously better than they have been at home. Personally, I attribute that to their impressive signings. Normally, they do enough to get by, Angers SCO, or give players from the lower leagues a chance. This time, however, they’ve signed two players that are proven quality options at Ligue 1 level, namely Boufal and Cabot. Between them, Angers SCO are afforded natural width and skill, making the job of Bahoken, Thioub, and even forgotten man Diony (who is a very good forward too, which many have forgotten from his barren spell at AS Saint-Etienne) much easier. Let’s not overlook that Amadou joined in midfield too. Bluntly put, this is the best Angers SCO attack I’ve ever seen – on paper. The reality should come in due course too.

So, yeah – I think they’ll trouble Racing Club Lens today. Which way the game goes is open to debate; you can make an argument for either side to win it. Personally, I think that backing both teams to score at 9/10 is the best way to approach this match.

Verdict: Both teams to score at 9/10.

Additional games

Mainz 05 vs TSG Hoffenheim

KO: (UK time)

It’s nice to see Mainz 05 playing well again. It may not always result in what they’d want it to, but they do play some lovely attacking football, still jealously guarding the original Klopp and Tuchel blueprints from all of those years ago! I still find them to be an absolute disaster defensively, even when Niakhate is playing, but they’ve become strong offensively, which is impressive for a number of reasons.

I mean, Mainz 05 creating chances regularly – that’s nothing new; they’re an attack-minded team. However, Mainz 05 converting their chances regularly? Now that’s very different. They’ve simply got a lot right in the final third throughout 2020. French forward Mateta is in the form of his life, although please don’t believe the British media when they almost certainly try to link a team to buying him – nobody wants to buy him, and they won’t until he can prove that he can do it for more than one season, which has never happened throughout his career.

It’s not just Mateta carrying them, though. He’s not the kind of forward that can do that. He needs service, and the service he’s been getting in 2020 has been very good. That’s down to Quaison being as in-form as he is, the maturing of Dutch playmaker Boetius, and the speed of Oztunali and Onisiwo. An honourable mention should also go to returning Korean attacker Ji, and young forward Burkardt, who has done a lot of selfless work up top this season with scant reward. They’re playing well enough to optionally leave big Szalai out of the equation though, and that’s a big deal for Mainz 05.

Mainz 05 have really got their shit together lately too, which helps. They’ve had a number of games this season where they’ve played well, but not scored. Now they’re playing well and scoring. They recognise that they have to score at least twice in order to avoid defeat due to their shocking defending, which surprisingly hasn’t improved despite them getting St. Juste fit again. Still, everything they’ve put in place aids their very capable attack, including their attack-minded full-backs, and when they’re as confident as they currently are, Mainz 05 score goals.

TSG Hoffenheim may be the better side here, but they’re not going to relish this away game, particularly not after a mid-week European game. They did rotate for the match against Slovan Liberec, and I’m sure they’ll be pleased that they won it, but this is a hard game. TSG Hoffenheim have generally thrived in harder games this season, more adept with a high pressing approach fused with countering. In ‘ordinary’ games, they’ve become a bit disappointing TSG Hoffenheim. They do look more modern under Hoeneb, but they’re no better at the back.

Essentially, there’s a bit too much toing and froing with TSG Hoffenheim; there’s still no midfield controller in their squad, so they’re seldom in control of their encounters. They do have some very good attackers, even when you view them as individuals rather than as a collective, but it’s seldom been enough to negate their goals conceded. You all know how good Kramaric is, and Bebou has been a revelation since joining the club. Skov and Bruun Larsen have more to offer in time too, although I still want a proper finisher in that squad, which there simply isn’t – Dabbur is not right for this level.

TSG Hoffenheim create a lot of chances though. They are happy to get men forward, they play with passion, and their speed in wide positions makes them very challenging to deal with, even for solid Bundesliga defences – which Mainz 05 do not have. They tend to make life hard for themselves in games of this nature though, and their hosts are fresher than they are, and very confident too. I think we’re in for a very entertaining spectacle here.

Few meetings between these two end without goals, and this one should not be an exception. It’s over 3.5 goals for me.

Verdict: Over 3.5 goals at 11/10.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
