Featured game

Atalanta Bergamo vs FC Midtjylland

KO: (UK time)

I daresay this will be a popular pick for most punters here. I mean, Atalanta Bergamo won at Anfield last time out with a surprisingly mature display, they hammered FC Midtjylland in Denmark, and most people look at the Superligaen champions’ record and think they’re just shit. It’s not true, but to put it simply, every man and his dog will be on Atalanta Bergamo tonight – and they should be, although they may not appreciate why that is.

FC Midtjylland have been really unlucky; unlucky to be placed in this group, that is. Tactically, I personally don’t think they’ve gotten much wrong, really. It’s only a lack of quality that has hindered them, which I think is acceptable. I mean, they lack a good finisher up front for this level; that’s been a big problem. They also lack a good defence. Now, they tend to be able to get away with the latter, especially domestically and against lesser European teams because they can’t be kept up with. That’s simply not the case in this group though.

Essentially, what FC Midtjylland do to keep teams from scoring against them is deploy an incredibly robust midfield that never seems to run out of energy. They press high and hard, constantly threaten with fast runners in behind, and it ultimately stops teams from having the mental belief or energy to actually get at the Danes. However, as luck would have it, they got dumped in a group with Liverpool, Atalanta Bergamo, and AFC Ajax Amsterdam – three incredibly mobile, skilful teams that play the same way as they do! Weirdly enough, I think FC Midtjylland would have had more joy against teams like Zenit St. Petersburg and Real Madrid.

Where it gets really bad for FC Midtjylland tonight is that Sviatchenko, their only good defender – their organiser – is out. Hoegh can defend too, of course, but has been out ever since his return to Danish football from SC Heerenveen. This would damage them somewhat domestically, never mind the cataclysmic effect it’ll have in Europe. If they escape Italy with a clean sheet tonight, it’ll be bordering on a miracle in my book. They have to go for the win here, and although I know they won’t fear Atalanta Bergamo, they really should – the Italians didn’t have to do anything special to smash four past them in the reversal of this fixture.

Ultimately, this game should go as Atalanta Bergamo want it too. I would not be wholly surprised if FC Midtjylland scored in this game, but how they intend on containing brilliant attackers like Gomez, Zapata, Muriel, and especially Ilicic, I don’t know. I refuse to pay any mind to Atalanta Bergamo’s Serie A form because they’ve made it abundantly clear on more than one occasion that they’re prioritising the UEFA Champions League, and who can blame them? The money in this competition arguably means more to them than anyone else in it. This is not a rich club; far from it. They almost went bankrupt at one stage, and have only got to this level by planning years in advance, selling every talented player they had for profit, and buying very intelligently. This is the competition for them, and it takes all of their focus.

With that in mind, I’m struggling to understand why this game would end in anything but a convincing home win. This is a very attack-minded team with tremendous firepower, and they’re not big enough to be complacent against an opponent from a ‘small league’. Atalanta Bergamo treat all opponents with the utmost respect, and work their socks off because of it. When quality and hard work are fused, the result tends to be positive. I just don’t see what FC Midtjylland can do to postpone what should be an inevitable home win here.

The handicap may be a trifle bold, I suppose, given Atalanta Bergamo’s penchant for shipping goals, and the frequently underestimated talent of the FC Midtjylland creators. Still, I think the home team can score enough to make it happen, so I’ll take my chances.

Verdict: Atalanta Bergamo to beat the -2 Asian Handicap at 89/100.

Olympique de Marseille vs Olympiakos Piraeus

KO: (UK time)

Am I pushing the anti-Olympique de Marseille wagon a bit too far here? Hmm. I don’t believe so. It’s not a very frequent occurrence nowadays, for a team to lose all six UEFA Champions League games, especially not one from a big league like Ligue 1. If they lose today though, that’s what is awaiting them – there’s not a chance they’ll avoid defeat in Manchester. It’ll be fun to see if there’s any pride left in this group of mercenaries.

If Olympique de Marseille intend on even being in the UEFA Europa League, they’ve got to win tonight’s game by at least two goals – and hope that Olympiakos Piraeus don’t get anything against FC Porto, a team that will have nothing to play for if Olympique de Marseille do indeed get something from this game. To say that I think their motivation levels will be gone is an understatement. Their manager has made it abundantly clear to the French media that his team are not good enough for this level, and I don’t think that’s exactly a revelation – it’s just a bit unusual for a manager to say it quite as brazenly as he has. Perhaps he misses being a driver rather than a manager and wants a payout, huh?

Anyway – Olympique de Marseille do have access to players that Olympiakos Piraeus don’t, in general. Although he’s a lazy fuck, Payet can be that man. Thauvin is still a class act, of course – he can decide most games in their favour. I’ll always like Sanson and Strootman in midfield too. In general though, Olympique de Marseille do not function as a team. They look scared of attacking because they know what’ll come at them if they do, so they tend to sit off teams and try to counterattack. However, they forget the ‘attacking’ side of that, and that defence of theirs is not going to keep teams out at this level. Basically, Olympique de Marseille have gotten everything wrong in every UEFA Champions League game this season; I expect more of the same tonight.

My big concern here is that Olympiakos Piraeus will play for the draw, which will be enough for them to attain a UEFA Europa League place. It depends on how ambitious boss Martins is, really. If he believes that Manchester City can win in Portugal tonight, then he may as well go for the win, and see if FC Porto have the bottle for a feisty night in Athens to decide which team goes through in second place. I’d like to think it’d be the latter; that would certainly aid my tip. I don’t doubt that Olympiakos Piraeus can contain their hosts well enough to get the draw; I just want them to play with that bit more purpose because they can definitely win at an empty Stade Velodrome. It’s a shame classy playmaker Valbuena won’t be playing for the Greek heavyweights; he’d love to play a pivotal role against his former club!

Olympiakos Piraeus can do this though, seriously. It’s not a team that I trust away from home very often; they’ve always been an awful lot stronger at home than away from home. However, this is a good side with lots of experience. They’ve got a good target man El-Arabi, and both he and Koka have been amongst the goals this season. Rapid Portuguese winger Bruma is on the cusp of returning, and he’s one hell of a lethal weapon on his day. Soudani is a good dribbler – if in the mood – and club legend Fortounis will always give this team a chance whilst he’s on the pitch. It helps that M’Vila is playing as enforcer for them too – he knows this opposition very well.

They’re not rash, Olympiakos Piraeus – I like that about them. They’re very ‘European’ i.e. patient, measured, classy on the ball, and organised. They don’t have the quality of most teams at this level, understandably, but I would not underestimate them. They’re a far more convincing and effective European team than Olympique de Marseille are, and tonight’s trip to France might just be the perfect platform on which they can prove it.

For me, backing the visitors with draw no bet cover at 6/5 looks just peachy here.

Verdict: Olympiakos Piraeus to win with draw no bet at 6/5.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
