General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Internazionale vs Crotone

KO: (UK time)

Although I admire the efficiency of Internazionale, I would urge a bit of caution with Conte’s men as they’re not performing as well as they did last season. They’re still giving teams too many avenues into games against them, forcing Internazionale to rely upon their outstanding firepower to get them through games. Given that they’re better than most Italian teams now, that’s not the worst idea in the world – but it does make them a lot more jumpy than usual. A counterattacking team like Crotone, who can play without any pressure in Milan today, should cause their hosts problems with that in mind. I’ve been really impressed with the southerners since they were promoted from Serie B. They’ve been mature and effective. I think they can do some damage here, to be frank. I still expect the home team to score enough goals to win the game, but I would not want to handicap the title hopefuls right now.

Verdict: Internazionale to win at 1/5.

Bayern Munich vs Mainz 05

KO: (UK time)

Mainz 05 tend to concede goals anyway, but when star French defender Niakhate is out, it tends to be a lot more than usual. Therefore, a trip to face reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich could – and should – result in something of a pummelling. The only thing stopping me from backing such was how knackered they looked in December. I’d like to think that a week or two off would have refreshed them but I don’t want to bank on it, not after such a busy 2020. For now, I’ll simply stick with the home win, which really should happen here, but I would not be surprised if they did some serious damage to Mainz 05.

Verdict: Bayern Munich to win at 3/25.

Santa Clara vs SL Benfica

KO: (UK time)

A lovely trip to The Azores beckons for SL Benfica tonight – not a bad way to start 2021 at all! Most people seem to think they’ll struggle here due to some laboured displays of late, but I don’t agree. Santa Clara are one of the weaker teams competing at this level, and their opponents have access to a lot of very dangerous forwards. I seldom trust SL Benfica to actually keep a clean sheet, and even a trip to the islands does not change my mind on that front, but I do trust SL Benfica’s attack to ensure that they get three points from matches such as these.

Verdict: SL Benfica to win at 11/25.

Juventus vs Udinese

KO: (UK time)

I certainly don’t expect an easy ride for Juventus tonight. This situation suits Udinese down to the ground, able to sit back, play as underdogs, and hit on the break. They’ve got the most dangerous attack that they’ve had in years on their books too. However, I still trust in Ronaldo and co. doing enough to win this game. It’s something of a translational year for The Old Lady, as their results this season have indicated, but with the proviso that there are no stupid red cards tonight then they should be able to force the win. Absolutely no handicaps for me though; I respect Udinese’s organisation too much right now.

Verdict: Juventus to win at 2/5.

Banker

FC Porto vs Moreirense

KO: (UK time)

Although having done really well at avoiding defeat this season, Moreirense fans have every reason to be concerned right now, not that the league table reflects it. For an attack-minded team, eight goals scored in eleven games is just not good enough. That, fused with the Covid-19 that is still in their camp makes them a team to oppose rather than back. Facing this lethal FC Porto side away from home should be a very damaging occasion for the visitors. FC Porto’s defending does terrify me, I must admit, but their attack should ensure that they pick up three points tonight.

Verdict: FC Porto to win at 1/5.

Featured game

Macarthur FC vs Central Coast Mariners

KO: (UK time)

It looks like the bookies are keeping a better eye on the A-League this season, based on the odds for this game! They may have slipped up by making new A-League entry Macarthur FC such underdogs in their season opener against Western Sydney Wanderers, but pricing them odds-on to beat Central Coast Mariners is really rather astute. New or not, they’re still a lot better than Central Coast Mariners.

What I would say, though, is that I don’t think that Macarthur FC have been favoured quite enough by the bookies. When I watched the F3 derby on Friday, I saw two teams create and waste boatloads of opportunities whilst giving away lots themselves. The scoreline ending 1-0 was symptomatic of two utterly ineffectual attacks because neither team played with any fear, or caution. No, they both went for it, and both embarrassed themselves in spectacular fashion, demonstrating rather clearly that they’re only really going to be able to trouble one another this season; nobody else should struggle. The goal itself only came about because of poor goalkeeping from Duncan, who came out for a ball he was never going to win, and young forward Kuol got his head in there first. It certainly wasn’t ‘one off the training ground’; let me put it that way.

Central Coast Mariners basically lack just about everything. I don’t know how they’ve hung onto their excellent shot stopper Birighitti, but it’s one of few positives for them this season. Their attack is mobile, tenacious, and physically hard to handle but lacking in finishers, technique for creating, and cohesion. De Silva is the obvious exception to the rule but whether he shows it or not nowadays is anyone’s guess, really. Despite his young age, I’m starting to feel like the ship has already sailed for him but time will tell.

The Central Coast Mariners defence is now somehow worse than last season. Keeping hold of Tongyik and making him their defensive bedrock is comedy gold. I must admit that I’ve been impressed with the development of full-back Clisby; he really has come on rather well over the past twelve months. I’ll always be impressed with midfield veteran Bozanic too, who is good at pretty much everything. That defence is a joke though, and any A-League attack worth its salt will rip it to pieces, which is precisely what I expect from Macarthur FC today.

I can’t pretend that Macarthur FC battered Western Sydney Wanderers last time out; that’s simply not the case. I thought it was an even affair, and an entertaining one at that, both teams causing problems. Federici was forced into one or two very good saves, but I always felt like Macarthur FC were holding Western Sydney Wanderers at arm’s length in that derby, you know? Like they had another gear to go to if required. The way that Benat and Milligan controlled the midfield, and the budding relationship between experienced winger Susaeta, veteran striker Derbyshire, and wonderkid Rose was really very impressive. Indeed, the latter did his reputation no damage whatsoever with an industrious and effective display on the right hand side.

I thought that Macarthur FC looked very mature in that game, simply put. I appreciate that Western Sydney Wanderers still have some questions to answer in their squad so it was a good time to face them. However, the way that Macarthur FC had already gelled was really something to enjoy. They looked like they’d been playing together for years! I said in my last preview that the new A-League teams tend to make a splash and Macarthur FC look no different. They’re really very capable, and I would not be surprised to see them push for the title this season.

I mean, why not? Sydney FC may have won against Wellington Phoenix, and they did have some good moments in that match, but in general I thought they looked really concerning. They completely fell apart after the seventy minute mark because they’re too old and not fit enough; they weren’t even able to counterattack at that point, and none of the substitutes made a blind bit of difference. It was pure luck that saved them at the end of that game. Fair play – they’ve still got some wonderful individuals, and they scored two of the best goals you’ll see in the A-League this season to win that match – but that won’t happen every week. I saw nothing in that game that should worry Macarthur FC, that’s for sure, and they’ve already beaten most folks’ dark horses for the campaign ahead.

In essence, I’m expecting Macarthur FC to control this game easily enough, and score enough goals to win it convincingly. Games are seldom that straightforward in Australia, but the quality gap here is significant, and the away team are not only regressing on an alarming basis but are also without their new ‘star’ attackers like Janota and Urena, who are quarantining at the moment. Anything but a convincing Macarthur FC win here would surprise me.

Verdict: Macarthur FC to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 21/20.

Adelaide United vs Melbourne City

KO: (UK time)

This is by far the riskier of my two Australian tips today as the odds correctly indicate. This one could go either way, depending on circumstances. My opinion is that Adelaide United are in the better position to win this one, based on what I’ve seen from both teams, but it’s early days and there’s no quality gap to speak of.

So. Melbourne City won their opener against Brisbane Roar, as I thought they would. I knew Brisbane Roar would be poor in chance conversion, and they were. If they could actually finish then they wouldn’t have lost the game but benching McDonald (slight niggle) pissed all over that concept. Even McDonald himself squandered a late chance. I thought Brisbane Roar’s high press did a lot of damage to Melbourne City in that first-half, though – cards on the table. They were lucky to get out of that half unscathed, Melbourne City. A half-time rocket from Kisnorbo was enough to see them put together a mature and assured second-half display, which saw Metcalfe stroke home a beautiful goal, but the red card for Uruguayan attacker Luna ended the game from an attacking perspective for Melbourne City. Ironically though, it helped them. Normally, going defensive against Brisbane Roar is considered cowardly because of how poor they are at converting opportunities but with ten men, it’s the perfect excuse to do so – and they’re awful at breaking down such setups, the Roar. Subsequently, Melbourne City hung on for the win that they just about merited.

There were more than one or two weaknesses I saw in that squad though. Like I said above, the pressing of the Melbourne City defenders – although ineffectual for the first ten minutes or so – ultimately forced them into mistakes. Midfielders were giving the ball away too often, and passes were too short. They didn’t have the bottle to deal with that scenario, and nor did they have the leaders required to pull them through. They needed half-time when it came. I didn’t see enough of a ‘natural’ approach from the team as a whole either. What I mean by that is that, although they stuck to Kisnorbo’s instructions well, they had no idea what to do when that wasn’t working. By far their biggest problem was young goalkeeper Glover though, who flapped weakly at every cross. Again, a team with better ideas of how to hurt teams in the box would have capitalised upon it more than Brisbane Roar did. I believe Adelaide United can be that team.

I was impressed with what I saw from The Reds against Western United. They were facing a very settled team but made them look like amateurs at times, pressing hard and high, and forcing them back for most of the first-half. They bounced back in the second-half in typical Rudan fashion but at no stage did they have the visitors under the cosh, and credit must got to Adelaide United for that because Rudan is a very good manager. Adelaide United did some very good business pre-season though, and I stand by what I said last week – big Tomi Juric up front is going to make a real difference for them this season.

Another player that stood out was teenage forward Dukuly, snared from Melbourne City pre-season. His movement, dribbling, and general footwork was very good for his age. All he needs to learn is when to shoot and when to pass, and also to get some power behind his shots. He was a really good addition though, and the sheer athleticism of the Adelaide United team from front to back kept them in the game at all times, which wasn’t the case last season because their central midfield (defensively speaking) wasn’t able to keep up. Now, though? I really like what I see. They’re a bit like Brisbane Roar but with a much more convincing attack. Their pressing and aerial threats caused Western United problems so I’m sure it’ll cause Melbourne City problems today too; probably moreso with the Glover situation in mind.

It’s imperative that Adelaide United don’t let Melbourne City sit on the ball here though. If that happens, this game is only going to go one way. If The Reds get into their faces though, and pump lots of crosses into the box for Juric, they’ll unquestionably score goals today, Adelaide United. You can never write Melbourne City off at the other end, not with a lethal poacher like MacLaren on the pitch. However, I believe Adelaide United can score enough goals against Glover for it to not matter, and let’s not forget that key creative attacker Luna is suspended for the visitors here.

Therefore, I’m on the home win with draw no bet cover at evens.

Verdict: Adelaide United to win with draw no bet at evens.

Atalanta Bergamo vs Sassuolo

KO: (UK time)

Most bettors are backing goals here, and fair enough – it should be a cracking game with lots of chances, so I really cannot blame them. Predictably, the bookies are all over it though. You’d have to hit over 3.5 goals to find anything close to reasonable odds, and I don’t really want to take that avenue after a bit of a break, you know? I’d much rather trust Atalanta Bergamo to do what they always do against Sassuolo.

Dea’s form this season has been patchy because they’ve rotated too much between UEFA Champions League games, effectively sacrificing their Serie A matches for more appetising fixtures. However, since they qualified for the knockout stage of the competition, their focus has returned to Serie A fixtures, which is why they’ve looked themselves once more, claiming a well-earned draw at Juventus, and hammering both ACF Fiorentina and AS Roma along the way. After a nice little break, I expect them to be back to their best today too.

The complexities when dealing with Atalanta Bergamo are endless. Handling two brilliant playmakers like Ilicic and Gomez is hard enough, but then somehow dealing with the power of striker Zapata and the skill of Muriel is something else altogether. Then you’ve got two incredibly big, athletic wing-backs that never seem to tire. Then you’ve got central midfielders that can all crack off excellent long-range efforts if not closed down. On top of that, they’ve got some absolute giants to score from set pieces. Dealing with Atalanta Bergamo is very hard, basically – and nobody does it especially well.

True enough, they do concede a lot along the way. Toloi and Caldara being out today won’t help on that front. Conceding does not concern Gasperini and co. though. Indeed, many in Italy consider it an unusual game when Atalanta Bergamo do not concede. It doesn’t faze them though; they always have ways back into games. They’ve got lots of match-winners, many industrious players, and lots of routes to goal. Atalanta Bergamo are able to outscore every team in Italy, Sassuolo included, and they tend to make a habit of it in these fixtures too. I just don’t have a good reason to doubt it happening again here.

Sassuolo are a really good team though, and one that I respect a great deal. Whenever Gasperini decides to call it a day, I hope that Atalanta Bergamo appoint De Zerbi as his replacement as he’s very much in the same mould as the experienced Dea boss. Sassuolo have a very good manager on their hands, that’s for sure. Not many Italian teams play out from the back better than Sassuolo, and that helps them sustain the pressure on their opponents because they see a lot more of the ball.

All Sassuolo ever want to do is attack though. That has its positives and negatives, of course. They tend to find themselves entrenched in high-scoring games on a regular basis; sometimes they profit from such, and sometimes not. I do think that they look better in open games but they’re still remarkably effective when it comes to carving out opportunities against teams. Caputo has really rolled back the years as a poacher, and with the brilliant Boga on one side and classy Berardi on the other, Sassuolo are seldom short of unpredictable and dangerous forwards.

Then there’s Locatelli and Lopez controlling things, and Bourabia, Djuricic, and Traore (I’m a huge fan of the latter) providing more direct support. Caputo is never left on his own, that’s for sure! Their defence has improved now they’ve stopped starting Marlon too; he’s a bit too calamitous, even for Sassuolo. However, this is still a team that plays very boldly; too boldly, really. That’s why good teams seldom struggle to smash goals past them; there’s plenty of space to do so. Atalanta Bergamo seldom have it easy against Sassuolo, who play just like them, but they do tend to outscore them by virtue of having better forwards and more tactical flexibility. Nothing has changed on that front this season either.

Back goals if you prefer, but I am more in favour of taking the home team to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 87/100.

Verdict: Atalanta Bergamo to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 87/100.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
