General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Slavia Prague vs Sigma Olomouc

KO: (UK time)

Despite cruising through the campaign and sitting pretty at the top of the table, Slavia Prague saw fit to add yet more great additions over the winter break, making the most of their ‘friendship’ with Slovan Liberec by bringing in Ukrainian centre-back Kacharaba, sending Karafiat the other way. They’re going to win the title, and they’re absolute beasts at grinding out wins. Sigma Olomouc have a great level of togetherness but do lack individual quality for big games like this so an efficient win for the reigning champions seems very likely here.

Verdict: Slavia Prague to win at 1/4.

AZ Alkmaar vs ADO Den Haag

KO: (UK time)

I don’t trust the AZ Alkmaar defence for a single second but their attack is very good, and they’re up against one of the worst ADO Den Haag teams I’ve ever seen. Home win.

Verdict: AZ Alkmaar to win at 7/50.

Featured game

Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers

KO: (UK time)

Sydney FC have gone from dominating this derby to not winning one since 2018 – and I don’t believe that’ll change today. Of course, it’s still early season in the A-League, and displays have been far from pristine for any team so I’m not making any guarantees. Based on what the two teams have done pre-season though, and what they’ve shown thus far, Sydney FC should not be such heavy favourites here.

True enough, few teams at this level possess the experience and match-winners that The Sky Blues do. They’ve really started to slip over the past couple of seasons though. Hard to put that into words, I suppose, given that they’ve now won back-to-back titles, but it’s perfectly true. Also, as an FYI, they rode their luck in both Championship finales, but that’s the perk of having such experienced heads – the big occasions don’t faze them, unlike most players playing at this level.

This Sydney FC team is getting old, though. Seriously old. I noticed it a lot last season, the team getting hemmed in from seventy minutes onward, trying to hold their lead. They had no fast counterattack (just Barbarouses, who was usually subbed off by then anyway) and nowhere near enough energy to get anybody forward, and I saw more of the same against Wellington Phoenix in this campaign. Indeed, they only beat the Kiwis thanks to two brilliant shots from long range, which is decidedly rare at this level. If Wellington Phoenix can hurt them as much as they did by simply being fitter and running more, just imagine what Brisbane Roar can do to them!

Bizarrely, Corica opted not to sign anyone pre-season. Well, until a week or so back when they panicked and re-signed ancient striker Bobo to replace the departed Le Fondre. Bobo has done a very good job at this level before now but is nowhere near fit (and will not play for a few weeks because of it) and is not a solution to their problem because he, like most others in this squad, is slow and old. If you sit off them and let them play, then Sydney FC will hurt teams very easily with four brilliant playmakers and two real live wires in Barbarouses and Buhagiar, especially with support from Grant at right-back. However, if you get into their faces then Sydney FC struggle a lot more than they used to – and that’s what I expect to happen in today’s derby.

Western Sydney Wanderers are not perfect, but I do like where they’re at. Their defence worries me without a natural partner for McGowan, especially as they now appear to be attempting to play with wing-backs under new boss Robinson. In other words, there’s lots of work to do with regard to cohesion in their defence, and the number of chances they gave away against Macarthur FC and Newcastle Jets respectively backs that point up perfectly. They cannot be so cavalier here because Sydney FC will score goals if given the chance.

However, what I’ve really liked about Western Sydney Wanderers is their energy, their attacking intent, and their effectiveness. Their finishing needs to be a bit better but it’s still early in the campaign so I can live with that. Besides, they’re now building their creative game around new signing Troisi, and that takes time. They’ve also done away with target man Duke, relying exclusively upon poacher Cox, and that involves a different approach being used. Despite their changes in attack though, as well as some wayward finishing, this team has looked really dangerous when getting forward.

Now, Robinson’s teams like to play on the front foot, and to do so with energy, based on what I saw from Newcastle Jets last season. He’s now got an incredibly fast, tenacious attack on his books too. I can see them pressing their opponents from the beginning, and trying to knacker Sydney FC, which is an approach that should work. Whether Western Sydney Wanderers are smart enough to deal with Sydney FC prior to that almost inevitably happening remains to be seen, but I think they’ve got enough about them to manage it. They’re certainly the fitter and faster outfit, and they get to play this match as underdogs so there’s no pressure. I’ve seen enough from them to believe that they can get something from this derby anyway, whether a win or a draw, and at 21/20, I’m happy to take that risk.

Verdict: Western Sydney Wanderers to win with a +0.5 Asian Handicap at 21/20.

Additional games

Melbourne City vs Western United

KO: (UK time)

The second A-League offering of the day is a Melbourne derby between its two most recent clubs, Melbourne City and Western United. Nowadays, there’s very little between the two outfits. Personally, if pushed, I would favour the visitors here because they’re more settled and more experienced. There’s not enough in it for me to get involved in the 1×2 market though, especially not with Uruguayan creator Luna back from suspension for the home team.

I do like the idea of this being a low-scoring affair though. Melbourne City don’t seem able to impose themselves on games particularly well right now, for starters. I think they still look jittery at the back, especially young goalkeeper Glover when he comes out for crosses, and it’s making the entire team that bit more anxious than usual. Playing out from the back has been a tad more error-strewn than usual for them, and their central midfield has been non-existent thus far.

Luckily for Melbourne City, they have a very intimidating attack that can score a goal from nowhere so they can’t simply be hemmed in at all times. Nabbout is out injured for a while, but with MacLaren, Luna, and Noone in the equation, this team will threaten its opponents, and few A-league teams are warier of the attacking speed that Melbourne City possess than Western United, having given away points against ten men last season for that exact reason. Still, this is quite a young Melbourne City side, and not one that I trust to win hard games right now. I do trust their defence, however – it’s solid enough, even with Glover looking edgy as he takes his sweet time in warming to the number one shirt.

Their opponents, Western United, are a very patient, plodding kind of team. They’re tactically astute under Rudan but they do lack in the speed department, massively over-reliant on wing-backs for any kind of way of getting in behind defenders. When everybody’s fit, that’s not a great issue – Risdon and Pain play those roles to perfection, which surprised me a little because I never thought Pain could introduce that much defensive awareness – but he has. However, Risdon’s sudden long-term absence has put Rudan in an awkward position. Yes, his understudy Pierias has impressed with his speed, fitness, and awareness – but he lacks a good final ball, and that’s where this team misses Risdon. Western United miss nobody more than their wing-backs so his absence is problematic, especially keeping in mind that their only goal-getter is Berisha, someone that thrives on crosses.

Then there’s the Pasquali situation to consider too. He barely featured last season, but was expected to do so this season with Kone having moved on – but no, the ex-Melbourne Victory academy graduate is injured, and will be for a while too. This leaves occasionally brilliant Diamanti as the sole playmaker and that’s not particularly inspiring, given his penchant for shooting from just about anywhere. Unsurprisingly, Rudan has since moved for Basque attacking midfielder Guarrotxena, who may debutise here. He needs that something extra in the final third to stop his team being as predictable as they’re becoming.

Still, the Western United capacity to control games is very impressive. I rate boss Rudan really highly in that respect. He’s got boatloads of experience in this squad, and has added a really composed midfielder in Spain’s Sanchez to keep things ticking over. They’re seldom rattled, Western United, and I doubt they will be tonight – unless they play too adventurously against a fast attack, of course. I don’t think they’ll be daft enough to do that though, not at this stage of the season leastways.

Final third play has been quite rusty at the start of this campaign for most teams, if not all of them, and I think it’ll be the same here. These two teams defend well enough to annoy one another so backing under 2.5 goals at 11/10 appeals to me here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Werder Bremen vs Augsburg

KO: (UK time)

This tip is arguably a tad bold of me, but I just don’t believe that Augsburg should be such underdogs here. I don’t think there’s any German team that I like more than Werder Bremen from a personal perspective, but the reality is that they’re a team to oppose rather than back right now, and I say that knowing perfectly well that star creator Rashica has now returned from injury for the home team.

Werder Bremen lack penetration. It’s that simple, really. Whilst someone like Sargent still gets into this starting eleven, you know they’re scraping the barrel when it comes to potent threats in the final third. Yes, they have missed Rashica whilst he’s been out, which is most of the campaign, but it’s more than that. They’ve lost bundles of intelligent running and driving movement since Klaassen returned to The Netherlands, and they simply don’t have any natural dribblers except Chong, who is still learning his trade.

The Werder Bremen strikers like Selke do take a bit of shit, as would Fullkrug had he not had that randomly good start to the campaign. I’ll agree that they’re not special strikers, but they’re also given very limited service nowadays. Indeed, they’re seldom able to get any shots off at all. There’s just not enough about Werder Bremen to scare teams any longer. The only thing they do that can upset teams is get their full-backs to overlap. I still maintain that Sweden’s Augustinsson is one of the most underrated full-backs in German football; it’s baffling to me that he’s not moved to a bigger club yet. Gebre Selassie has been terrific at it over the years too; a true club stalwart. An ageing club stalwart, though. Ergo, even the Werder Bremen overload isn’t going terribly well.

The above is bad enough, but also consider that Werder Bremen are an attack-minded team. They’re used to conceding goals, in other words, because they expect their firepower to bail them out as that has generally worked well over the years. This season? Not so. Their defence is looking weaker than ever too. Moisander is ancient and barely fit any longer; certainly not fast enough to play in a high line. Veljkovic is seldom available. Toprak makes too many errors. I could go on, but you get the picture; Werder Bremen keeping a clean sheet seldom happens on purpose.

The above kind of team strikes me as one that should struggle with Augsburg, who have been tactically brilliant this season. Their counterattacks have been deadly, and their game management has been absolutely superb. Consider that Augsburg, much like their hosts, do not defend particularly well in general. They work hard, just like Werder Bremen, but they don’t have much quality at the back, and they seldom put much effort into finding any. For that kind of team to perform like they have this season is nothing short of superb, even if they have struggled over the past few games.

They’ve got their defensive leader Gouweleeuw back for this game, Augsburg, if that’s of any consolation to you. I’m more interested in the Augsburg attack, personally, and that’s looking rather deadly, although it’s a shame that Richter won’t be playing; I like him a lot. There aren’t many like him about that can be as effective leading the line as they are playing an inside forward role. With Caligiuri more than happy to roll back the years though, Hahn reminding everybody of how good he can be, and Swiss wonderkid Vargas in the equation though, it’s not hard to see why Augsburg are so hard to handle.

Curiously, none of their designated strikers have scored a goal this season. Finnbogason isn’t 100% fit (and probably never will be again) but is a good target man. Niederlechner is a natural target man, and much fitter than the Icelandic international. Both do very good jobs, actually – it’s just that they’re not there to actually score goals. If they do, great, but the concept at Augsburg is that the midfielders do the damage; the front men are merely battering rams. The Augsburg approach works though, and I’ve seen it be very effective against a lot of Bundesliga teams this season. I expect it to work at the Weserstadion today too.

I grasp that this is a very important game for Werder Bremen as it’s a must-win in their battle against relegation (which is the sad reality once more). I’m just not buying that they have what it takes to break resolute Augsburg down though. I think the visitors could do a really good job on their hosts here, especially if Augustinsson fails his late fitness test, and I can’t possibly overlook such generous odds on the away win with draw no bet cover.

Verdict: Augsburg to win with draw no bet at 5/2.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
