General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Viktoria Plzen vs Hradec Kralove

KO: (UK time)

Although the Czechia Cup is not the mostly sought-after of trophies, I think Plzen might just have to focus on it. Their European campaign died ages ago, and their league hopes haven’t been seen in months. I can’t realistically doubt a top four finish for Plzen but there are some very good teams in the country right now so perhaps a Cup run is their best avenue to Europe. Besides, hosting Hradec Kralove, who haven’t been in the top division for some years now, should not be all that hard for them, even if they do rotate. Subsequently, I expect a home win.

Verdict: Viktoria Plzen to win at 7/50.

Ferencvaros vs Diosgyori VTK

KO: (UK time)

Ferencvaros may have taken their eye off the ball a little of late, but they remain the best team in Hungary by a long way. Hosting a Diosgyori VTK side that have revamped most of their squad in 2021 should not be challenging for them, really. The visitors do have some decent individuals but offer little collectively. To put it bluntly, the reigning champions should find this a comfortable match to win.

Verdict: Ferencvaros to win at 1/4.

Juventus vs Spezia

KO: (UK time)

Juventus tend to struggle with overly energetic teams nowadays, which Spezia are, so I would not even dream of any handicaps here, especially not if their absentees are the same as they were at the weekend. That said, they’ve regained their winning mentality under Pirlo lately, and they’ve got more match-winners than Spezia. Therefore, I anticipate a home win.

Verdict: Juventus to win at 11/50.

Manchester City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

KO: (UK time)

Two things here. One is that City look phenomenal at the moment. I do have a curious feeling that they’ll lose the derby at the weekend, purely because they can’t win every game and because they do find it really hard to beat United at home. Other than that somewhat superstitious thought though, they look unplayable right now. The other is, like I’ve always said, Santo has not made it with any top team because he can’t manage a team to do what they should every three days. Give him a week, and his team will be fiercely competitive; that’s where he shines. With so many fixtures crammed in for Wolves at the moment though, and some of their best players still out, a home win looks inevitable here.

Verdict: Manchester City to win at 7/50.

Featured game

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne City

KO: (UK time)

I really wanted to back Western Sydney here because they impress me more with what they offer than City do, the latter of which still look very fragile to me. However, their home defeat against Adelaide at weekend indicated precisely why I can’t justify doing that. Goals, though? Absolutely!

You see, Western Sydney should have beaten Adelaide – but didn’t. I can accept the last goal that they conceded on the break, trying to push players forward to get back into the match. The other two, though? It’s poor defending, poor goalkeeping, poor marking – you name it, Western Sydney did it. It’s hard to think of more than five chances that Adelaide had in the entire game but Western Sydney ensured that the chances they did give away were virtually unmissable. At the other end, Western Sydney created lots of good opportunities. I think that the corner count was something like 17-0 in their favour by the end of the match, and they won the majority of the first balls into the box from them too, not that they scored any. On another day, they’d have won that game but they didn’t, and these blips that they’re having makes me wonder if they’ll lose against City instead today.

They sure as hell don’t deserve the form guide they’ve got right now, Western Sydney. I’ll nitpick about them wasting chances but they do score a lot of goals anyway, and bringing Duke back is only going to help them in the heading department. For me, the big issue they have is in defence because they simply don’t look comfortable in a wing-back system, not when containing teams. On the face of it, you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s highly promising teenager Natta that is the issue, who has started a lot of games lately, but that’s simply not true. He’s been very composed, and his positioning has been excellent – he’s really impressed me. Collectively though, Western Sydney don’t stop teams scoring against them; it’s that simple.

I mean, consider this – new defender Gordon has been one of their more consistent players this season. Russell has been outstanding, for the most part. Natta has been brilliant. Aquilina has been excellent. Wilmering has been brilliant in the last couple of matches too. As individuals, the Western Sydney defence is doing just great! Collectively speaking though, they really struggle with every kind of attack, and that’s going to make life a lot easier than it should be for lethal finisher MacLaren, especially when he’s flanked by any combination of Noone, Luna, and Nabbout.

So why not back City to win, huh? They’re certainly fresher than their hosts at this moment in time, so I could not blame anyone for trying it. I will not be one of those that does though. As always, City have the squad to hurt teams but seldom the effectiveness for one reason or another. In the past, they’ve had top-drawer squads without any energy. Then they lost some of that quality and replaced it with energy, but then didn’t score enough goals so focused on defending instead. Then they lost key defenders and decided to focus on their midfield controlling games instead but now they have a suspect defence. They never get the combination right, basically, and it would be just like them to beat Sydney FC and then lose against Western Sydney.

The front three of City are really good. If you give them time on the ball, they’ll crucify you – it’s that simple. I also think that Metcalfe has matured an awful lot as an all-round midfielder; he’s become undroppable, really. However, they’ve had serious issues in feeding their front three this season because teams that bully them find it far too easy to keep them quiet. A bit of a press, and a few over-zealous challenges, and then City won’t be seen for dust. The injury to midfield terrier O’Neill hasn’t helped either, as he’s the one that has to help them win battles in the centre of the park.

I also have concerns over City’s constant need to play out from the back. That’s not an issue if you’re good at it, but they’re not, even after acquiring Reis to help them with precisely that. I like their full-backs a lot; they’re all solid. Their centre-backs are limited in number, however, and not good under pressure. Fuse that with a nervous goalkeeper that still flaps weakly at crosses/corners and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. If the right team gets at them, City will fold. The only question I have is whether Western Sydney can be that team or not today because although I don’t doubt their potential, I do doubt their consistency.

Ultimately, I’m left feeling like backing goals is the right thing to do here. I can’t imagine City containing such an athletic attack with such dangerous movement, and I can’t imagine Western Sydney stopping any A-League from scoring right now. Therefore, backing over 3 goals at generous odds appeals to me far more than picking a winner here.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 11/10.

Additional games

Perth Glory vs Central Coast Mariners

KO: (UK time)

The Mariners have had a couple of weeks off ahead of their trip to Perth, and I have to consider that a negative. They were excellent in all four games prior to it, even the one they were cheated of victory in, going down 3-2 in Adelaide to a referee that awarded three penalties for 0.5 fouls. They’d normally be likely to give Glory a good game here, especially after Glory played a weekend, but after a fortnight off I can’t help wondering if the Mariners’ fire will have dampened somewhat. Suffice to say that I, like the bookies, favour the home win here. I mean, the Mariners’ run can’t go on forever – can it?

I remember when their runs did used to go on forever, mind you. They used to be a really good team. Quite where it all went wrong for them, I don’t know, but for the past few years they’ve been the butt of most A-League jokes. It’s nice to see them fighting back, you know? I’ve never found myself disagreeing with too many of their signings either, nor their managerial appointments, so quite what the problem has been, I really couldn’t say. What I can say, however, is that Stajcic (current manager) has got them playing to their absolute maximum. Their kids look mature, their regulars are giving their all, and they’re taking their chances. What more can really be asked of this team?

No, I don’t envision for a single second that Tongyik will be able to stay fit/lkeep defending well, that Simon will continue to evade that looming red card, or that Kuol will keep scoring with every opportunity, nor even that da Silva will keep playing consistently well. However, for the present time, that’s precisely what’s happening, and teams are struggling to cope with the Mariners because of it. I couldn’t honestly say that this is a particularly good attacking team but they sure as hell don’t show it on the pitch, constantly looking to probe opposing defences for weaknesses.

Effectively, what Stajcic has somehow concocted with this group is a team that presses like Brisbane Roar whilst being as clinical as Sydney FC. It’s a really healthy combination. Any decent team that hems them in will ultimately find a way to score because their defence is their biggest weak spot. However, actually bossing the Mariners midfield is really tough, especially with Bozanic in such inspired form. Furthermore, they’re so quick on the break that stopping them altogether is ridiculously hard, and most teams are simply resigned to trying to outscore them, accepting that they’re going to concede. It’s a really impressive setup they’ve got, considering that there is only one real star player in it, and it’s a team that should be taken seriously for the foreseeable.

However, in the cold light of day, they can’t hold a candle to Glory. Whether it shows today or not, I don’t know, but what I do know is that Garcia’s 4-4-2 is truly unleashing the devastating potential of Glory’s attack. Surprisingly, D’Agostino has been getting some game time alongside Fornaroli instead of Keogh but between the three of them, they’ve got goals whichever way you paint it, especially with Castro loading the bullets. Kilkenny’s set pieces have been superb, as always, and Armiento has contributed an awful lot alongside him too. They’re going to be unstoppable when Ikonomidis returns a few weeks from now, honestly. They’ve been devastating in attack this season, Glory!

Understandably, their attacking prowess has come at a cost, which is their defence. They’re always going to be suspect for conceding goals whilst they’re attacking as much as they are, and that’s especially true with so many new faces at the back. I mean, Langkamp hasn’t played yet, and OIta barely has, which has led to teenagers like Warland, Rawlins, and Tatafu playing at times. Lachman has settled in quite well, and Aspropotamitis has done alright, but there’s still a lack of cohesion there, probably not helped by the fact that Velaphi now appears to have replaced Reddy in goal. I know Reddy is cracking on a bit but he’s still the better goalkeeper so that’s a weird one.

Under Garcia, Glory are entertaining; the polar opposite of what they were under Popovic last season. I prefer to watch Garcia’s Glory, but I also think that Popovic’s Glory were better placed to actually compete for major honours. Time will tell whether my opinion on that front is correct or not; I just don’t think Glory look as smart right now as normal. Having said that though, they do look capable of breaking down any defence in the country. I mean, bagging three against Roar is a very rare thing indeed because of how hard it is to get past their midfield – but Glory managed it. They put three past Melbourne City, and four past Western United too. This is a really dangerous outfit, and one that could – and should – beat the Mariners today.

I think you can make persuasive arguments to back either team to win here though, so I won’t be touching the 1×2 market, although as intimated above, I do favour the hosts. Backing over 3 goals at 23/20 makes complete sense to me though, as we should be in for a very intense and open game between two dangerous attacking teams.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 23/20.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
