General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Tulevik vs FCI Levadia Tallinn

KO: (UK time)

Even during the early stages of the Estonian Meistriliiga, I still expect Levadia to have too much for Tulevik. The quality gap in the Baltic nations has shrunk in recent times, especially thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there’s still enough of one for Levadia to be trusted to beat Tulevik, home or away.

Verdict: FCI Levadia Tallinn to win at 6/25.

ADO Den Haag vs FC Utrecht

KO: (UK time)

I toyed with goals in this one but I just don’t know which Utrecht will show up. They’re capable of devastating their hosts, and ADO Den Haag look really short of confidence at the moment. However, I know Utrecht of old, and they sometimes opt to sit on leads because they know they can against most Eredivisie outfits. It’s also worthwhile remembering that ADO Den Haag have actually signed good attacking players in 2021. That may not show on the pitch at this time, but it will at some stage, and Utrecht will not want to awaken that beast. I believe we can trust Utrecht’s quality to decide this game in their favour, but whether they do it via a massacre or not is something I remain undecided on.

Verdict: FC Utrecht to win at 3/10.

Banker

PSV Eindhoven vs Heracles Almelo

KO: (UK time)

I stand by what I said in my AZ vs PSV preview; PSV are not playing well. They’ve not played well for months, actually. The difference between PSV not playing well now, and PSV not playing well over the past few years, is that the PSV of today are natural goal-scorers. Therefore, whether they play well or not, they tend to score enough goals to beat most Eredivisie teams, and that’s precisely what I expect to occur against Heracles today. I think a case could be made for Heracles actually playing better football than PSV but with far less quality, and given that only the top teams tend to be able to take points off PSV whilst they’re playing as they are, I have to believe that we can trust in the home win today.

Verdict: PSV Eindhoven to win at 9/25.

Banker

Tambov vs CSKA Moscow

KO: (UK time)

Tambov’s mid-season ‘antics’ has led to them being rather easy to beat in 2021. I’d like to think that even a somewhat youthful CSKA Moscow side would beat them, with that in mind. They should have the new manager impact on their side too, given that the board rashly sacked talented Goncharenko, and replaced him with former CSKA Moscow forward Olic. CSKA Moscow have enough quality to decide this game in their favour, especially with Fernandes having made a surprisingly speedy recovery from his injury, and Tambov aren’t really good enough to stop the title hopefuls. Ergo, I expect an away win.

Verdict: CSKA Moscow to win at 7/50.

Banker

FC Sion vs Young Boys Bern

KO: (UK time)

Sion can be good sometimes but they’re too much of a circus to stand a chance against Young Boys, in my opinion. This team is always suffering from injury problems, a lot of an attack, and have recently been managed by their own owner – and not for the first time. Taking on Switzerland’s best team should not be a pleasant experience for them today – and that’s coming from someone that knows how overrated Young Boys actually are by the masses because of the Super League table. The quality gap and mental strength gap are both too large here.

Verdict: Young Boys Bern to win at 1/2.

Banker

SC Heerenveen vs AFC Ajax Amsterdam

KO: (UK time)

Not only are Ajax playing particularly well at the moment, and scoring goals for fun, but their hosts have been defending like idiots for the majority of this campaign, and they’re without their target man, Henk Veerman. Heerenveen’s only real way into games nowadays is via scoring goals because they can’t be trusted to prevent opponents from doing so, and without Henk Veerman, that’s not going to happen. It’ll take a horrendous Ajax display in order for the visitors to do anything but win today, in short.

Verdict: AFC Ajax Amsterdam to win at 1/4.

Banker

Budafoki MTE vs Ferencvaros

KO: (UK time)

Mathematically speaking, the Hungarian title race isn’t over. However, from a realistic standpoint, it was over months ago because not only are Ferencvaros far too good for the rest of the division, but also their rivals are far too inconsistent to mount any kind of serious challenge. A trip to face relegation-threatened Budafoki MTE should not be all that challenging for the reigning champions today.

Verdict: Ferencvaros to win at 1/4.

Banker

Salzburg vs Sturm Graz

KO: (UK time)

Even with a few absentees today, I still believe Salzburg will have too much for Sturm Graz. The visitors’ defence has become easier to score against in 2021, and the reigning champions have numerous avenues from which to do so. Besides, the title race isn’t over in Austria; not by a long chalk. It normally is by now, but Rapid Vienna are really pushing their bitter rivals this season, which means Salzburg need to keep winning. I expect them to do so today, although I would not be surprised if it turned out to be a tough match for them as Sturm Graz are very resilient.

Verdict: Salzburg to win at 1/4.

Banker

Zbrojovka Brno vs Slavia Prague

KO: (UK time)

Even with several absentees, and a big European match next week, I have no concerns about Slavia tonight. They’ve got two squads of players for this type of situation, and both of those squads could win the Liga 1. Therefore, a trip to face Brno does not concern me, particularly as the home team are struggling for both confidence and goals right now. It’s an away win for me.

Verdict: Slavia Prague to win at 7/25.

Featured game

Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC

KO: (UK time)

Do you remember what I said in the Mariners vs Victory preview about how it felt like they were rushing players back from injury? I said that A-League clubs often announce they’re doing it as a worry factor for their opponents before the players are actually fit. Well, it horribly backfired on defender-less Victory, as they lost three defenders during that game – Ryan, Traore, and Roux – and one of the replacements had to be Shotton, who was not fit enough to play. Shotton came on, looked unfit, and is now ruled out of the “Big Blue” through injury. Who can be surprised by that? Not me.

I think the issue is a lot more serious than Victory are trying to make it sound too. For the last twenty minutes of that game, they were absolutely knackered, and I lost count of how many players picked up knocks. Kruse and Brimmer were both limping by the end, and as I said above, three of their back four were taken off with injuries. With Roux and Traore, I can accept that they might be able to play today but Ryan? Surely not. He looked like he’d pulled his groin in that game, but with Victory’s penchant for fielding injured players at the moment, he’s been named in the squad today. Again, I think Brebner is trying to concern opponents with his overall squad selection because for me, a lot of their defenders are not in any kind of condition to play in this game.

Factor into the above that they’re still without experienced organiser Broxham, who can play in midfield or defence, their only forward that can win the ball in the air in Gestede, and Rojas, the closest thing they’ve got to an actual playmaker. They did alright for a brief spell against the Mariners, only really scoring because of confusion (Mariners thought they had had a free-kick, but it went Victory’s way, and led to a counter). Other than that, the Mariners were dominant but credit to Victory; despite their defensive situation, they held their own pretty well. The Mariners didn’t penetrate enough but that’s on them; Victory did what they could. The problems at this club are still gargantuan though, as I’ve detailed frequently in the past month or two, and I suspect Sydney will not offer any sympathy today.

I’ve been quite critical of Sydney too for a number of reasons, but their problems pale in comparison to those that Victory have. With Sydney, it’s simply a case of not taking their chances well enough or not being adventurous enough or making a few too many individual errors at the back, especially Redmayne. Take the Adelaide defeat, for example. They held their own pretty well in that game but one mistake in their own box led to a penalty, which Goodwin converted. Sydney could have scored a goal or two themselves before the final whistle but didn’t. It’s small margins that decide such things.

Sydney give very little away; I like that about them. I also like that Grant is back today to help them out in attack because he really does play as a makeshift winger – and he does it really well too. His presence not only takes attention away from more recognisable attacking threats but also adds unpredictability and speed, both of which The Sky Blues lack when he’s not on the pitch. It’s a bit sad that that’s the way things are at Sydney right now, but it’s just reality; this is not the same team that used to dominate Australian football. That doesn’t mean that they won’t win it this year, but it means that they’ve left themselves more room to improve than seen before.

Having said all that, I think they’ll beat Victory easily today. They’re the better team anyway, but facing a demoralised and predictable side with boatloads of injury problems should be a walk in the park for the visitors. Alright, I might be pushing my luck somewhat with the ambitious secondary tip to back Sydney to score over 3.5 goals, given that they do tend to sit on leads more often than not, plus my atrocious lack of luck yesterday, but I can only view odds of 6/5 on them beating the -1 Asian Handicap as a bit of a steal here.

Verdict: Sydney FC to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 6/5.
Sydney FC to score over 3.5 goals at 6/1.

Additional games

Darmstadt 98 vs Fortuna Dusseldorf

KO: (UK time)

Darmstadt 98 have done well in recent weeks, pushing away from the relegation zone. They’re still not free from danger, but they’ve given themselves a good chances of staying up now. It’s got to be very frustrating for their fans to even be in this position to begin with, given how brilliant their pre-season transfers were, but that’s another story for another day.

Darmstadt 98 have done well by virtue of outscoring teams as they’re all but resigned to conceding goals nowadays. They’re an attack-minded team this season anyway, but the issues they’ve had in defence this season have pretty much forced their hand anyway. To begin with, they were without defensive midfielder Palsson for a long time, and even since his return he’s not been at his best. Then there was the integration of newbies to consider, and then there were various periods of absence of Herrmann, Pfeiffer, Bader, and of course Wittek, who is still out. Even Mai has missed a game or two. They tried to buy someone in January to ease the situation, namely Sweden’s Isherwood, and he’s been injured ever since joining. So, yes – they’ve given up on defending.

They’re still good in attack though, and so they should be with Dursun up front. I feared that Seydel’s injury (again!) would derail them too much because of how well he’d started playing again, but they’ve still been finding the net easily enough. I might criticise forward Berko for his lack of goals, but the rest of his game is good. Skarke, Mehlem, and Honsak have been giving even more, and Kempe hsa been brilliant, of course. They’re yet to fully test Campo in midfield; I think he’ll do well, but it’s not easy to integrate a newbie when you’re battling against relegation. This Darmstadt 98 attack is good though, and they’re going to need it to continue to be good if they’re to survive today’s encounter.

Fortuna Dusseldorf have finally decided that they do indeed want to push for promotion, which is nice. A bit late in the day, but with most rivals failing to win consecutive games, it’s by no means an impossibility. I still maintain that they have one of the stronger squads in the Bundesliga 2, and that they should have played far better than they have from the very beginning, but that’s another story for another day. At the moment, they’re giving that bit more in matches, which is all I really want from them as their natural quality will do the rest in due course.

True enough, they’re without a win in their last two matches. The opener against Sandhausen simply never came, and their defeat against high-flying Bochum was a derby, so I’m not paying too much attention to the little run of theirs. I don’t rate Fortuna’s defending highly, anyway. He may be one hell of an athlete, but if Danso is your defensive hope, then you’ve got some serious problems heading your way. At no point has there been a solid Fortuna back four this season, and I can’t really buy into the concept that they’re happy with their goalkeepers either. The sooner they get Mitryushkin up to speed, the better.

For today’s game, the visitors are without midfield controller Morales, which won’t help their defence at all. They have a few question marks in attack with Iyoha, Karaman, and Appelkamp all on the sidelines, but it’s nothing that Hennings, Kownacki, Sobottka, and Peterson shouldn’t be able to cover for, especially with Darmstadt 98’s defensive setup verging upon being embarrassing. Fortuna are the better team here, not that they’re consistently showing it well enough, and they have enough going forwards to secure the win. The 1×2 market does little for me though. Both teams could do with the points, and neither convinces me in defence.

Therefore, backing over 2.5 goals at 4/5 suits me here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Hannover 96 vs Hamburger SV

KO: (UK time)

With a couple of wins under their belts, perhaps Hamburger have finally learnt how to not bottle things. I doubt it, but it’s got to happen at some stage, and they’ve won two very hard fixtures to be fair to them. They needed that injection of confidence, and they’ve got it. The only sad thing for them is that there was an international break straight after it, potentially damaging any momentum generated. I mean, talented full-back Vagnoman played a lot of minutes for Germany U21; who knows what kind of condition he’ll arrive back in? And he’s very important to this team at both ends of the pitch.

They’re certainly not promoted yet though, Hamburger, so they need to keep winning, including in Hannover today. They’ve got the quality to make it happen, especially with arguably the Bundesliga 2’s best ever striker – Terodde – on their books, and very much back from his Covid-19 lay-off. With Hunt, Kinsombi, Kittel, Narey, and by far my favourite Hamburger player Jatta in the equation, this team will always create chances, whether they play well or not. They should not struggle to score against Hannover today either.

Again, on paper, Hamburger are comfortably the best team playing at this level; it’s just down to their mentalities as to whether they show it or not. How a team goes from losing 3-2 against rock-bottom Wurzburger Kickers to beating VfL Bochum 2-0 away from home, I honestly don’t know. It must be insanely frustrating for their loyal fans that they can’t consistently play well, even if the results aren’t always there – that much is at least forgivable. Whatever they do or don’t get from this game today though, I expect commitment and goals. If they do that, they stand a chance of winning it.

I’m not prepared to bet against Hannover right now though, and not just because of how unpredictable Hamburger have been over the past few years. They’ve generally played well in 2021, Hannover, and have been incredibly hard to actually beat. I can’t say that they’ve been perfect because they haven’t, but they’ve certainly given a good account of themselves on a regular basis, and doing the same today should give them a reasonable enough shot of getting a positive result from the encounter.

I love how Hannover have learnt to score goals without over-relying on anybody. Twumasi, Ducksch, Sulejmani, Weydandt, Muslija, and Haraguchi have all contributed significantly on that front this season, and I’ve genuinely no idea that the latter is still doing playing at this level when he’s very much a Bundesliga level footballer. I think Bijol’s integration in the sitting midfield role has helped them attack more effectively too, as he screens the back four well. Hannover feel a lot more positive than they have done for a couple of years now, basically.

Are they as good as Hamburger? No, in a word. However, they’ve got enough about them to cause some problems today, and their never-say-die attitude never fails to impress me. The promotion dream is all but over now, but in typical Bundesliga 2 fashion, they’re not really far enough away from the relegation battle to take their foot of the gas. Therefore, Hannover need to give this game a go, and see where it takes them. If they set about Hamburger well enough from the beginning, they might just pick up three points; time will tell.

For me, backing over 2.5 goals at 4/5 makes sense here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
