Randers vs FC Midtjylland

KO: (UK time)

At the business end of the season, FC Midtjylland tend to be at their very best – and so it is proving to be again. The bookies have already slashed the odds on them winning the Superligaen to 1/10 because they know that they’re going to do it. Of course, Brondby’s fatigue and FC Copenhagen’s inability to keep clean sheets plays a part, but it’s mostly the depth, perseverance, and efficiency of FC Midtjylland that has led to such.

Although the Zealand clubs are unquestionably bigger than the reigning champions, they lack the consistent desire and belief of FC Midtjylland; that’s the reality of Dnaish football nowadays. It was a bit of a surprise to see them exit the DBU Pokalen against SonderjyskE mid-week but the Superligaen was always the focus so it’s not really bad news for them, at least not in terms of today’s game. I expect to see them bounce back and do what’s necessary here, just as they have against every team they’ve come up against in the league lately.

What I like the most about this club is how they consistently manage to get the best out of players, often exceeding what those players should even be capable of. Take striker Kaba, for example. He’s a very average target man but has been made to look excellent, particularly in 2021. I know they’ve got real talent on their hands in Anderson, Evander etc. but they also have players that wouldn’t stand a chance of making it at a higher level because they’re simply not very good – and yet everybody at FC Midtjylland contributes to the collective output on a remarkably consistent basis. Another example – Cajuste. He’s been playing so well that Sweden and USA were quarreling about which one of them got him to play for them at international level!

They have players for every situation, FC Midtjylland, and when they put their minds to it, they’re a very complicated team to face – even in Europe. It’s not a surprise that they continue to dominate Danish football with that in mind. I’m not saying that they’ll win every game between now and the end of the Superligaen campaign because the law of averages will come into play, of course. However, what I am saying is that they’ll win most of them, and I’d like to think that today’s trip to Randers won’t be an exception.

Randers over-achieved to break into the top six this season. Well, I say ‘over-achieved’, but really they just capitalised upon other teams not doing as much as they should. Randers always work hard; that’s guaranteed. The same cannot always be said of their contemporaries however, and in this case, that team is Aalborg BK. Randers are now purely in the Superligaen for the ride because they can’t finish any lower, and finishing higher is going to be a tall order against an energetic, in-form FC Nordsjaelland, and a superior AGF.

Besides, Randers have something much more fun to prepare for – the DBU Pokalen final! They beat AGF on aggregate to book their place in the final in May, drawing 1-1 mid-week to make it a 3-1 win overall. They’ll fancy their chances against SonderjyskE in the final too, who have certainly not made the most of their financial muscle this season. Randers have the right bottle for a DBU Pokalen final, so I would not bet against them, even if they are a touch short of quality.

But, yeah – when it comes to Superligaen motivation, it’s naturally dropped a bit as they’ve already achieved something special with their top six finish. Lately, it’s been a case of simply enjoying where they’re at. They’ve given FC Copenhagen and FC Nordsjaelland things to think about in recent matches but at the business end of the season, they just don’t have enough application nor quality to make it count. I expect a similarly plucky, carefree display from them here, and although they may score, I expect them to be outscored by a far better, and far more focused opponent.

For me, 9/10 on the away win here is a must.

Verdict: FC Midtjylland to win at 9/10.

IFK Goteborg vs AIK Solna

KO: (UK time)

I’m probably asking for trouble, betting on arguably the most intense Swedish derby tonight. Swedish football itself is not very violent, per se, but you can bet your bottom dollar that when trouble occurs, AIK Solna will be involved. The hatred between these two clubs is what made me as surprised as i was to see Icelandic striker Sigthorsson switch clubs pre-season, especially considering that he’s not actually had a good campaign for quite some years now because of injuries. I won’t deny that IFK Goteborg were short of striker options anyway but it’s still a weird transfer.

Unusually, I think we’re in for a good derby tonight though. In the past, these two teams have generally sat back, shit scared of losing, but tonight feels different. AIK Solna are more attack-minded under Grzelak, and they look more comfortable with him in charge now he’s been there for a little while. They’re not blessed with great forwards, AIK Solna, especially not with Goitom’s better days behind him. However, they’ve got a lot of experience, and a top-drawer midfield containing match-winners like Larsson and Bahoui, still with Rogic to return to it. It’s nice to see Finnish youngster Ylatupa getting the game time he deserves too; he’s been very good for two years now. They’re good from set pieces, AIK Solna, and shored up their numbers by bringing centre-back Milosevic back to Sweden after his weird stint at Vejle in Denmark. It’s a solid enough setup that AIK Solna have cobbled together; probably not dynamic enough to push for the Allsvenskan title, but hopefully enough to keep them away from the relegation battle this season. On paper, that’s not a problem, but the Allsvenskan is highly competitive and AIK Solna nearly went down last season because they underestimated such.

They’re still a bit casual at times, AIK Solna, which is why I don’t trust them as much as some people do tonight, based on the odds movement. I do recognise the heightened potential of an away win, given the absentees of their hosts, but I tend to find that IFK Goteborg have more fight than they do. AIK Solna are a bit more shrewd on the ball, and better at controlling games, but are less capable of dealing with pace and “X” factor elements, which always makes this contest tight, which is why the 1×2 market does nothing for me. Still, if AIK Solna can’t find the back of the net when both Johanssons are out, then they’re in the wrong profession!

IFK Goteborg caused a stir in Sweden pre-season, splashing the cash on good players like it was the 90’s all over again! In a few months, Marcus Berg will rejoin them after many years away, and it sounds like he won’t be their last big name recruit, if the Swedish media are to be believed, with Oscar Wendt also rumoured to be on their list. Slovakian legend Marek Hamsik has already joined, Sigthorsson signed, and now Thern has too. All of them joining Aiesh, Wernbloom, Bjarsmyr, and their highly-rated youngsters should – in theory – make IFK Goteborg more dangerous. I have my reservations about such because they’ve made a lot of changes at once, and because they’re asking top-drawer players to synchronise their minds with lesser players, which is always a gamble. Still, time will tell.

For tonight’s game, IFK Goteborg still have considerable absentees to deal with, as I intimated above. Both Johanssons are out, which leaves their defence looking suspect, as it was against Orebro – not that their hosts bagged on the night. In that game, I was pleased to see IFK Goteborg building and maintaining pressure on the opposing goal, and although they didn’t find the net on that occasion, on another day they would have from the chances they created. With Aiesh, Thern, Sana, and Norlin supporting Soder and Sigthorsson, I have to believe that IFK Goteborg can hurt their bitter rivals tonight, whether they get something from the game or not. Again, I do understand why folks are backing the visitors here but for me, there’s still not much in it.

I think there’s more scope for goals than usual tonight though, hence my interest. Both teams seem bolder, and laden with more attacking talent than before. Therefore, despite this being an early season derby, backing both teams to score at 9/10 appeals to me.

Verdict: Both teams to score at 9/10.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
