General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

TB vs B36 Torshavn

KO: (UK time)

I don’t see this being as easy as the Betrideildin table would have you believe it is, purely because TB are quite good tactically. However, their almost complete lack of firepower (for the second season running) means that the capital club should win this game, one way or another.

Verdict: B36 Torshavn to win at ? (no odds listed yet)

Viktoria Plzen vs Teplice

KO: (UK time)

Viktoria Plzen hammer Teplice in the Liga lately; now I expect them to do the same in the Cup. They’re the far better team, Teplice seldom travel well nowadays, and this is the only realistic route Plzen can really go for if they intend on playing in Europe next season. For me, this should end in a convincing home win.

Verdict: Viktoria Plzen to win at 7/50.

Galatasaray vs Konyaspor

KO: (UK time)

Super Lig title hopes have been slender for Galatasaray of late. However, they’ve picked up good points, and are motivated by both the change of manager at Fenerbahce, and the crippling injury problems of Besiktas JK in attack. Therefore, against an injury-ravaged Konyaspor, I expect them to do enough to secure the points tonight.

Verdict: Galatasaray to win at 1/2.

Cerro Porteno vs Deportivo La Guaira

KO: (UK time)

I don’t envy any South American team taking on Paraguayan giants Cerro Porteno away from home, let alone minnows Deportivo La Guaira. Cerro Porteno may have a touch of complacency about them when it comes to winning domestic matches, but they step things up for the Copa Libertadores, and as the team with far more match-winners, I expect them to win this game.

Verdict: Cerro Porteno to win at 9/25.

Barcelona Guayaquil vs The Strongest

KO: (UK time)

Again, Bolivian teams seldom travel well. The Strongest are one of their more experienced clubs on the continent nowadays but still aren’t a match for impressive Ecuadorian outfit Barcelona Guayaquil. I almost think they’d prefer to face Liga de Quito, given the usual altitude in the Ecuadorian capital, rather than in low-lying Guayaquil. Either way, I expect Barcelona to be too good here – home win.

Verdict: Barcelona Guayaquil to win at 1/4.

Olimpia Asuncion vs Always Ready

KO: (UK time)

Bolivian teams seldom travel well; partially through a lack of quality, and partially because most Bolivian teams are used to playing at high altitude (although not all). Travelling to face Paraguayan heavyweights Olimpia Asuncion is not a game that Always Ready can realistically expect to get anything from. The home team has too much quality going forward, and thus I anticipate a home win here.

Verdict: Olimpia Asuncion to win at ? (no odds listed yet)

Central Coast Mariners vs Brisbane Roar

KO: (UK time)

For my money, the overs market is taking too big of a hit here. True enough, you’re never far away from a high-scoring A-League game, but these two teams are very likely to neutralise one another, really.

Now that the dust has settled from the Mariners’ brilliant start, one thing has become abundantly clear, which is that they’re far better against teams that come at them than those that don’t. Brisbane Roar are not that kind of team though. Don’t get me wrong; they love a high press, the visitors, but I would never really describe this team as ‘risk takers’. In other words, if their conventional blood, sweat, and tears approach doesn’t work, then nothing will.

I think that’s even truer now that they’ve cut veteran striker McDonald loose. I don’t know the ins and outs of it, and I appreciate that he’s getting on a bit, but he’s still their best finisher. Without him, there is nobody I’d give the benefit of the doubt to for Roar when through on goal. There are numerous other good qualities for players like Mebrahtu, Wenzel-Halls etc. but consistently finishing well is not one of them. Sure, sometimes they’ll score an amazing goal but in general, they don’t. In fact, I have a theory that Wenzel-Halls’ shooting improves the further from goal he is!

Tactically, Roar are very good though. As a unit, they’re as annoying as hell to break down. To be fair, it has to be that way because on paper, they’d not stand a chance of stopping anyone from beating them. However, because they work so hard on their setup, on winning 50/50s, and pressing hard to keep opponents on the back foot, they’re actually a deceptively good unit. They’re crap when they’re expected to break teams down, no matter how hard they huff and puff – but they love games like the one today whether they’re absolved of pressure, and they can play on the break.

Ordinarily, I’d consider that Roar were priced too long to win this one, to be honest. They’re the equals of the over-achieving Mariners on their day. However, the absence of centre-back Aldred and full-back Brown is too much here; it makes the risk not worth taking, in my opinion. I may not be enamoured by the concept of the Mariners winning, but I recognise that they’ve got an edge in that area because Aldred in particular plays a significant role for the visitors.

Personally speaking, I would not touch the 1×2 market though. The Mariners need space in order to be effective so that their clever forwards can run in behind, or de Silva can make things happen. I doubt they’ll get much of that here though. It was easier against Sydney FC at weekend because they were able to counter, and they had space. Sure, Redmayne was at fault for the opener but it was still the type of game that the Mariners like to play in. I expect a far more closed game here though, and that does nothing for them.

It’s not the personnel that I think the Mariners will struggle to get around here, but moreso the shape and organisation of their opponents. I’ve watched Roar play without Aldred before this season, and they’ve done alright because it’s the collective that is effective, not the individuals. The collective Roar structure should be enough to at least frustrate the Mariners, where the title hopefuls win the game or not. It’s in games like these where the lack of quality in the Mariners squad is more than apparent, basically.

I can’t fault any of the Mariners players for doing what they do, and I think they’ll be a lot better now that Tongyik is back at the heart of defence. I mean, Rowles has performed above and beyond this season but is an average centre-back at best, and Sydney FC’s second goal at weekend tells you all that you need to know about whether he can be trusted or not. Tongyik is the driving force of this defence, and his return will make them even harder to hurt. I love their energy, their work-rate, and their fitness as a whole, and their two experienced forwards are really awkward to play against this season. This is not the kind of team I expect to hurt Roar properly though.

Therefore, barring an early goal, I believe that backing under 2.5 goals here simply makes more sense.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
