General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Crotone vs Internazionale

KO: (UK time)

Although Crotone are still battling heroically, they look a bit spent now. Good tactical setups are not struggling to contain them anymore, as both Udinese and Sampdoria demonstrated lately. Internazionale should not struggle to beat such a team, especially not when facing a Serie B level defence.

Verdict: Internazionale to win at 11/50.

Real Madrid vs CA Osasuna

KO: (UK time)

Barcelona lost at home against Granada earlier this week, and Real Madrid – despite their European commitments – need to capitalise upon it by winning today. Osasuna will put them through the wringer, I’m sure – Pamplona’s finest aren’t afraid of working hard, after all! However, Real Madrid have enough composure, match-winners, and experience to do what’s necessary here, although I suspect it’ll be done in a somewhat unfashionable fashion.

Verdict: Real Madrid to win at 9/25.

Sporting Clube de Portugal vs CD Nacional de Madeira

KO: (UK time)

It looks like Sporting have done enough to get over the finish line but they have been stumbling lately, which is something I thought would happen a lot earlier than it has. How they’ve won this title is beyond me, but fair play to them for being strong enough mentally to keep working and believing in themselves because that’s all it can have been. That should be enough to see them take another step toward the title by beating islanders Nacional today too. The visitors are desperate, but only wins count for them now. Playing openly against the league leaders is fatal, so I envision a touch of inevitability about this one.

Verdict: Sporting Clube de Portugal to win at 1/4.

Featured game

FC Basel vs St. Gallen

KO: (UK time)

Now this should be a good game! Almost certainly going to end 0-0 now I’ve said it, given my lack of luck lately, but all the signs point to it being an entertaining spectacle.

FC Basel have irked many people this season with their inconsistency, and my only advice to you all would be to stop regarding them as a top Swiss team nowadays because they’re simply not one. They’re got a brilliant midfield, yes, and one of the best strikers in the division in Cabral, although I find it hard to believe he won’t end up on the bench at TSG Hoffenheim or the like this summer. The rest of their team is deceptively average though, and that inconsistency in their ranks has led to inconsistent displays. Sometimes they score four, and sometimes they concede four. That’s the way Basel are now.

They’ve changed managers in 2021, cutting Sforza loose, which I think was inevitable after he took Stocker on in public. It should be as plain as day by now that the manager of this club is not the problem, though. It’s not been the problem for a few years. The problem is a lack of direction, a lack of investment, and a lack of togetherness. FC Basel have good players on their books but how they can be motivated to play for these morons behind the scenes, I do not know. It’d probably be for the best if someone like Federer bought the club because this cannot continue; FC Basel are regressing, not progressing!

The way in which this team drifts in and out of matches now is terrifying. Sometimes they dominate, and score goals at will, but there will always be far too many spells in such games where they’re put under the cosh themselves, they make too many errors, and end up conceding two or three. Set pieces, penalties, one-twos – you name it, FC Basel concede from it. Their formation with wing-backs does not allow their defenders to play to their best, and that will always give an opponent a route back into the game against them. I don’t see why that would change today.

St. Gallen themselves are horribly inconsistent, of course, but that’s at least understandable – they’re not laden with brilliant players, nor a lot of financial backing! They struggled to replace Itten/Demirovic pre-season, with Kamberi joining but largely disappointing, and that’s led to them not scoring enough goals. St. Gallen haven’t played badly this season, for the most part, but they’ve not won enough games for that reason. After all, they aren’t good enough defensively to contain teams, and seldom do they try to.

In 2021 though, they have improved. They were at their best in the Schweizer Pokal game against Young Boys Bern, although it should be noted that the capital club were particularly poor in that game too. St. Gallen move the ball fast, are always looking to make runs in behind, and their link-up play is very good. No, they don’t have a consistent finisher, but they do make enough chances to hurt teams, and they’ve finally started to make it count.

There’s no reason for St. Gallen to fear their opponents today, and I don’t believe that they will. I think they’ll smell blood and get at FC Basel, for what it’s worth. Whether they win or not is a coin toss to me though. Both teams are very inconsistent, as I said above, and both are far better at creating chances than anything else. I can see this game descending into an attacking chaos at some stage though, and when it does, we really should see goals via one medium or another.

Therefore, backing over 3 goals is my approach here.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 83/100.

Additional games

Opava vs Bohemians 1905

KO: (UK time)

With Opava now dead and buried, I’d like to think that Bohemians 1905 would have an easier ride here than they’d have had if they were facing Mlada Boleslav, for example, who are still playing for something.

The capital club never make things easy for themselves though. They made brilliant signings this season but never properly clicked. Then they had a lot of injuries in 2021, which is still the case now, and that’s even made them question whether they can beat the drop or not this season. Things look better now, but they still need to win. It’s not a complicated fixture at this moment in time, and even though they’re away from home, Bohemians 1905 should have enough about them to pick up three points here.

The work-rate at the away team has not dissipated; it’s remained constant this season, which is handy because nothing else has worked out. Their chance conversion has been surprisingly poor, considering that their main strikers are Pulkrab and Necid. They are still making things happen though, which is encouraging enough for me to trust them today. Opava may give them a few frights – although no doubt as many as Bohemians 1905 will give themselves! – but the visitors can’t really have any complaints for failing today.

Opava aren’t good enough for this level, hence their relegation. They’ve looked that way for most of this season (although not all of it, to be fair), and it’s especially true now that their relegation has been confirmed. They’re conceding goals far too easily, and some of their belief has gone. They’re not at a stage whereby they’ve abandoned their morals i.e. they’re still battling hard for 50/50 balls, and trying to upset their opponents. It’s the little things in the final third that they’ve stopped doing though, whether it’s making runs in behind, trusting their teammates to play them back in from one-twos, or making the right call in an advanced position. By no means are Opava horrendous, but they’re simply not looking capable of competing at this level right now.

With the above in mind, Bohemians 1905 really should pick up the points today, injuries or not, especially as Opava have players out too.

Verdict: Bohemians 1905 to win at 9/10.

Vaduz vs Luzern

KO: (UK time)

At this stage of the season, Liechtenstein’s finest are battling hard to stay in the Super League. They’ve pulled off some really good results because of it, but I always find it kind of hard to take them seriously when it comes to staying in the Super League.

You see, no matter where Vaduz finish in the Swiss footballing hierarchy, they still can’t qualify for Europe. It’s a physical impossibility. The only way Vaduz can quality for Europe is by winning the FL1 Active Cup, which consists of Liechtenstein-only teams, and it goes without saying that they win it 99.9% of the time. I’m sure there are others, but the only exception to that rule I can think of is Eschen/Mauren. Vaduz are the biggest and best team in the country, and they should always be able to show it.

Subsequently, their struggle against relegation isn’t quite as significant as it is for FC Sion, for example, who have invested a lot of money in attempting to do well in the Super League. It may just be me, but that’s made Vaduz that bit easier to watch at this stage of the season than normal. Yes, they’re still playing rather cautiously – I mean, I’m sure they’d rather test themselves against the best that Switzerland has to offer – but there’s also enjoyment about what they do. They’re still attacking, and they’re still scoring good goals, just like they did in the Challenge League. In other words, they are playing intelligently enough to avoid the drop without playing with any fear – and I like that.

They should have some joy against Luzern today too. Vaduz have been really good from set pieces in 2021, and Luzern can’t defend at the best of times. Vaduz may not have the best players in the Super League, but they do have a very varied, industrious group, which makes predicting them somewhat challenging. Converting their opportunities has been problematic this season, but bearing in mind how many chances Luzern tend to give away, I can’t help but feel that Vaduz are set for three points today.

Am I bold enough to back that outcome? Absolutely not. Luzern are twice as good as Vaduz, should they choose to be. I know they’ve had problems with absentees in these past few weeks with star striker Sorgic amongst those to have been missing, as well as Schultz and Ugrinic. However, you have to keep in mind that the lakesiders invested seriously well this season. They brought in six or seven match-winners, the likes of which have not been seen in these parts for a lot of years. Admittedly, that’s turned them into even more of a top-heavy team than usual, but it’s dangerous to write off their attack.

When they’re playing with fire, Luzern are very strong. Lately, that fire has dissipated somewhat, it’s true, and I blame absentees for that. It’s entirely possible that their minds are now set on the Schweizer Pokal, which is a very winnable competition for them. However, they’re a team that likes to play good attacking football at all times, and that should not change at the Rheinpark Stadion today. They have their limitations, Luzern, but goal-scoring is not one of them.

Therefore, I expect Luzern to turn up and keep this game open. What the game holds for them if they should do that, I honestly couldn’t say. Part of me thinks that Vaduz are more rugged, and have a better balance, but another part of me says that Luzern could score four here with the likes of Tasar on the pitch. That’s why I’m going to cheerfully ignore the 1×2 market altogether. However, being able to back over 2.5 goals at the odds quoted appeals to me, hence the tip.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Santa Clara vs Boavista

KO: (UK time)

Islanders Santa Clara have performed very well in 2021. It can’t be proven as to why this run-of-the-mill team has done as well as they have, but the general consensus in Portugal is that it’s because of where they’re based – The Azores.

You see, whilst everybody else has been banned from having home crowds, Santa Clara have not had that problem. They’ve been able to have fans at home games for a while now, and I believe that’s helped them win more than usual. Subsequently, they’ve built up a head of steam, and have actually performed consistently well for a while now. Again, they’re not a special team on paper, but their collective output has been very good, especially in front of goal. In other words, this is a team to take seriously for now.

I also think that they’ve picked a good time to face Boavista, who are struggling – and have been for most of 2021. The expectations were large for the visitors when they brought in some big names/hot prospects like Angel Gomes pre-season but it’s seldom shown. Too often they look disjointed and clunky, which has led to them dropping more points than they’ve picked up, and requiring a lot of luck in order to win matches.

What else can be expected from such a team though? I mean, you have to bear in mind that ever since they were reinstated in this division, they’ve had to play with lower league players to survive. That’s meant focusing heavily on their organisation and work-rate, and those players, no matter how limited they are, have done them proud. That, and playing on a plastic pitch, afforded them a substantial advantage for a significant period of time, which ultimately meant that they avoided relegation.

That type of team can’t become Braga overnight, you know? They’d struggle to become Guimaraes overnight! Yes, they’re better in defence, better at producing moments of magic in the final third, and better at converting chances because of the individuals they’ve acquired, but the spine of this team is still very average – and they’re not connecting with the better players that have joined. It’s a simple enough conflict to understand, but one that can only really be resolved by better players arriving, which hasn’t happened yet. Subsequently, this Boavista team has become one I find easier to bet against than I have in ages.

Santa Clara may not be amazing, but with a lot of fans supporting them, all the motivation in the world because of the potential of European football next season, and a disjointed opponent before, backing the islanders today really does make sense. I don’t see it being easy, but it’s the kind of match that Santa Clara should be able to navigate their way to victory in.

Verdict: Santa Clara to win at 11/10.

Bv09 Borussia Dortmund vs Holstein Kiel

KO: (UK time)

People are treating this DFB Pokal match as a banker, which I find interesting. Dortmund being better than Kiel is not a secret, and anything but eventual Dortmund progression would be a bit of a surprise. However, let’s not forget that Kiel put Bayern Munich out – and by no means was it a smash-and-grab job. I thought Kiel did their homework on Bayern marvellously, really hurting them with diagonals over the top, and they’d have won it in normal time had VAR been in place as the Bayern opener was clearly offside. They needed some luck to get to penalties after it went to extra-time because they were knackered by then, but the penalties they took – against Neuer, no less! – were absolutely superb. Kiel deserved to go through, and with all due respect to Dortmund, Bayern are better, smarter, and more experienced than they are.

The only thing that goes in Dortmund’s favour here is the timing of the fixture. Because of Covid-19, Kiel had a couple of weeks without a match, which I previously considered to be a positive. However, they were poor in their defeat against Heidenheim, and I have absolutely no idea how they managed to avoid defeat against Nurnberg earlier this week. Fair enough, Nurnberg are better than the Bundesliga 2 table suggests they are, and they’re playing with freedom now the pressure of avoiding relegation has gone. However, Kiel couldn’t get out of their own half until changes were made in the second-half, and Nurnberg hit the woodwork at least twice by my count.

To put it bluntly, Kiel look a bit sloppy at the moment. A team like that isn’t good enough to do well when they’re sloppy. They thrive because of hard work, understanding, and for this season only, tactics. They’re an excellent ‘mirror’ team, Kiel, and they seldom leave games without scoring at least once. Even against Nurnberg, whilst thoroughly under the cosh, they made changes that allowed them to score. This is a typically resilient group of fighters, and one that should not be taken lightly.

I appreciate that Kiel aren’t performing to their maximum right now, but this game may as well be the DFB Pokal final to them because they’re facing Dortmund, one of Germany’s biggest clubs. I find it incredibly unlikely that Kiel won’t be up for this game, despite recent bumps in the road. I think they’ll give it everything they’ve got, and with all due respect to Dortmund, Kiel don’t have a great deal to fear about them.

I know that Haaland, Guerreiro, Sancho (if fit) are all brilliant match-winners, and they could steer Dortmund to a dominant win today. That’s the measure of their individual brilliance. Collectively speaking though, this team does little for me. I will concede that they tend to be at their best at the business end of the season because mentally, they’re actually rather resilient now – thanks to the work that Favre did before he was sacked. I’m sure Rose will find a good use for it when he’s in charge next season too.

As a unit though, Dortmund are not a patch on what they used to be. They aren’t controlling games well enough, they’re far too suspect from set pieces and fast counters, and they just don’t penetrate enough for me to fear them. It’s bold, I grant you, because Dortmund should win a semi-final like this without batting an eyelid – but I don’t think it’ll be that way. Much like Dortmund, Kiel tend to be a big game type of team, and the pressure is all on the odds-on favourites. I guess I can surmise it by saying that I think Dortmund will fall short of expectations today, whether they go though or not.

I’m not confident enough to take the 1×2 market on here. I don’t trust Dortmund enough, and Kiel aren’t playing well enough. However, backing both teams to score seems a reasonable enough call at generous odds.

Verdict: Both teams to score at evens.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
