General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

FC Twente Enschede vs Cambuur Leeuwarden

KO: (UK time)

I don’t see Twente repeating their mistakes of last time out in Rotterdam. They dominated Excelsior then without taking their chances. A repeat display at home against a leaky Cambuur defence should only produce one outcome, really – Twente don’t surrender leads very often at all.

Verdict: FC Twente Enschede to win at 1/4.

Banker

AFC Ajax Amsterdam vs Fortuna Sittard

KO: (UK time)

Although I’m hardly blown away by Ajax at the moment, I think they’ll have enough to beat Fortuna, especially at home. The visitors don’t contain teams well enough, and they’re just not effective enough in the final third. I envision a tighter game than the odds suggest, but I also expect Ajax to do enough to win in the capital.

Verdict: AFC Ajax Amsterdam to win at 13/100.

Banker

Besiktas JK vs Giresunspor

KO: (UK time)

The title dream isn’t entirely dead for Besiktas JK yet but they must keep winning. They’re in a good place right now, they’re playing at home, and they’re hosting hapless Giresunspor. The quality gap in the Super Lig nowadays isn’t much to speak of, but Besiktas JK should be able to win this one, really.

Verdict: Besiktas JK to win at 2/5.

Banker

Feyenoord Rotterdam vs RKC Waalwijk

KO: (UK time)

The fact that Feyenoord are at the top of the Eredivisie speaks volumes for how much the standard has dropped this season. Still, they’re at the top, and they’ll fight to stay there. They always have a bit of an edge at de Kuip anyway, but with things going their way and the fact that they’re hosting an inferior RKC side – well, I can only see a home win. Don’t be surprised if it’s tight, though – Feyenoord aren’t that good in situations like these, and RKC certainly aren’t that bad.

Verdict: Feyenoord Rotterdam to win at 17/100.

Featured game

Stade de Reims vs Stade Brestois

KO: (UK time)

I appreciate that Brest are a handful, and that they do find it easy to score goals because of it. However, their chaotic approach against the meticulous approach of Still – I just don’t see how it can work. Mounie, Le Douaron, and Dembele have enough between them to cause problems, and their mobile midfield will always lend plenty of support. They rely too much on opponents’ mistakes to score goals though, and Reims simply don’t make many.

A lot is being made of boss Still online, and I get it – he’s doing marvellously, all things considered. This project is about more than just him though. It’s about having the right players in the right positions, and playing the right style to get the most out of them. Reims do that superbly. Balogun isn’t that good up front, for example, but he’s made to look like Kane in their system. Ito, von Bergen, Flips – they all play their roles perfectly. I doubt Munetsi has ever been as good as he has been this season, and it’s nice to see Cajuste fulfilling his potential too.

Reims know how to control games. They know when to sit and counter, and when to play on the front foot. They’re clinical, disciplined, and very consistent. For a limited team with a limited budget, they operate at a remarkably high level, which is why I trust them as I do. They’re not perfect, but they know how to win matches, and at home against a Brest side that doesn’t have any kind of “Plan B”, I just don’t have a good reason to doubt them.

Again, I’m sure that Brest will ask some questions here. They’re determined, they’ve got nothing to lose, and they have individuals that they can call upon to be handfuls. Not many opponents get an easy ride from them, if indeed any. However, tactics is the battleground that they struggle upon in the sense that they don’t know how to win games via that medium. It’s constantly a case of relying on individuals as well as opponents’ errors, and that doesn’t always work out (for obvious reasons).

For me, this game is a bit of ‘chalk and cheese’. On paper there isn’t that much between them, but in terms of tactics, effectiveness, and consistency, Reims are a lot better than Brest, and I expect them to prove it here. Based on the odds movement, I’m not the only one with such thoughts either. I can’t help but regard the -1 Asian Handicap as a good value pick, really.

Verdict: Stade de Reims to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 26/25.

Additional games

Melbourne Victory vs Perth Glory

KO: (UK time)

Victory are priced too short to win this game. I didn’t have any luck in the A-League yesterday but if things go as they should here, Glory will get at least something. I know I’m supposed to fear Victory following recent positive results but I don’t. I won’t knock a team for winning in New Zealand, for example, but they had to ride their luck in that game, just as they have in all of their games. They simply don’t dominate teams under Popovic.

I would also point out that this is Victory’s third game in a week. They may not be the most energetic of teams, but they’ll be feeling it. They’re fighting to get Geria fit, and have blagged his presence in the squad for two match days now because he’s not right; Nigro has had to fill in. Marchan can’t get in the team, which means they’re not controlling games as well. They’ve had to switch to a 4-4-2 to stop Fornaroli from getting too isolated in a system that doesn’t contain a single playmaker due to the injuries to Brimmer and Nani respectively.

It’s simply a very predictable and average Victory side, at least in terms of performances. I still like what they have to offer in terms of potential, but the reality isn’t impressive. I thought they were especially disappointing in the midweek derby. I mean, they knew they were losing 1-0 – the game started from minute 21 because of the abandoned game in December. However, they played as if it were 0-0, waiting for City to come at them and make mistakes. They only tried to change it toward the end, and by then it was 2-0. Again, they’re just too predictable, Victory.

Glory aren’t perfect, but they’ve improved a lot over the past month or two, at least in terms of displays. Losing Khelifi kicked them in the balls; they still don’t have a replacement for him, given Zadkovich’s reluctance to try proven Burke-Gilroy out. Still, I like how they function in the final third. Taggart is a brilliant striker, and the mobility and creativity of Amini, Jelacic, McEneff, and Ryan Williams makes his job a lot easier. McEneff is injured again now, but Bodnar is an able deputy.

It’s worth noting how well they do from left wing-back too. Clisby is an excellent player, but I’ve also become a big fan of Dowse from the bench – they always seem to score when he comes on because of his pinpoint crossing. If the rumour mill is correct about him signing for the Jets next season is correct, then Glory have made a mess of things. They’ve got good options to call upon though, the visitors – I like that.

Glory play like their manager did when he was a player; intelligent and industrious. They’ll still concede the odd goal but mentally they’re incredibly strong, and they give each team one hell of a game. They’re lethal in the final third, they cover more ground than most, and they play without fear. Victory may have the edge in terms of personnel, but Glory are more effective and trustworthy. I can see them getting a positive result in Melbourne here.

Verdict: Perth Glory to win with a +0.5 Asian Handicap at 23/25.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
