General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Manchester City vs Leicester City

KO: (UK time)

City look a bit too lethal at the moment, and need to keep winning to keep their Premier League title hopes alive. Leicester City look a stone cold atrocity right now so if they were to get a positive result in the north here, it would be a huge surprise to me.

Verdict: Manchester City to win at 4/25.

Fenerbahce vs Ankaragucu

KO: (UK time)

Ankaragucu don’t tend to travel very well, and Fenerbahce are one of the best outfits in Turkey right now. There’s not much of a Super Lig quality gap nowadays but there is enough of one here for me to trust in the home win.

Verdict: Fenerbahce to win at 33/100.

Featured game

Luzern vs FC Zurich

KO: (UK time)

I seldom oppose Luzern at home, especially not under Frick, but they are missing a lot of important players here. Not only that, but a lot of rotation options too. I wouldn’t be so bold as to call Luzern ‘predictable’ with what’s left, but let’s just say that I don’t think FC Zurich will be confronted by anything that they’re incapable of dealing with.

They’re missing most of their back four, Luzern. Drager and Frydek are their regular full-backs; both are suspended. Rotation centre-back Beka is also suspended, which is all the more problematic because Simani is still in the middle of his suspension following his assault on Romero in a friendly a fortnight or so back. Even Burch’s return doesn’t soften that blow. Dorn is a good replacement for Drager at right-back, and I think that Jaquez and Lemy Meyer will grow into good, solid defenders in due course. For now though, it’s not really a back four that is going to put the fear of God into the reigning champions. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that it’s decidedly vulnerable.

Not only that, but Luzern were a bit wild last match. They were in control against FC Winterthur for long spells, and deservedly went a couple of goals up. However, then they attempted to sit on it, invited danger, and conceded. They should have conceded more than one, too – they were lucky not to. I don’t know how a team that controlled games so well earlier in the season could suddenly become so lax in midfield.

I’m also concerned that Luzern still lack something up front with Frick refusing to field Sorgic. Schurpf and Chader are good, but they’re not strikers. Even with Max Meyer back to glue their attack together, they still need to have someone that will play off the shoulder of the last man, and none of the players that Frick plays does that – but he does have them in his squad. It’s weird. I don’t doubt him as a manager, and this really is a very good Luzern squad, but their vulnerabilities should come to light here.

FC Zurich aren’t perfect, and they have complications of their own, but one thing they’ve done extremely well under Henriksen in 2023 is control what their opponents do to them. They did it really well in “Der Klassiker” last weekend but only drew despite creating enough chances to win it; FC Basel only had two chances that I can recall. They need to step up and win more rather than drawing, but they’re a nightmare to beat, and they owe it to their Danish manager – they’re a far cry from the team they were earlier in the season.

The visitors find themselves without a few players here, as I said. Backup right-sider Rohner is out – no problem. Centre-back Kamberi is suspended, but that shouldn’t be a problem, assuming Aliti drops back into central defence now that left-sider Guerrero is finally back after a long time out. Tosin and Santini remain out up front but again, I’m not concerned – Okita and Simic can replace them man-for-man if required – so none of those issues are huge.

However, the absence of Dzemaili (banned by the Swiss FA for speaking about referees to the media) in midfield is an issue. I appreciate that Matthew is coming into his own more now, as is Conde, but neither have the class and experience that he does. Without him, their midfield does lack a certain something. Still, against an under-strength Luzern, I have to believe that FC Zurich will be ok. At the very least, they should be able to annoy their hosts into drawing.

For me though, backing the visitors with draw no bet makes sense at 11/10.

Verdict: FC Zurich to win with draw no bet at 11/10.

Additional games

Magdeburg vs SV Sandhausen

KO: (UK time)

There are obviously a lot of big games at this time of year. It’s hard to think of a bigger one in Germany’s Bundesliga 2 than this one, though.

SV Sandhausen are normally really good at avoiding the drop. They’ve got a good enough squad to do it this time too, but currently find themselves nine points from safety with seven games remaining so it goes without saying that they need to win as many games as possible. That process seems to have already begun under their new manager; they’ve been involved in plenty of high-scoring matches for a team that was formerly just a, “sit and counter” kind of outfit. It’s not doing them any good, however – they keep losing. They have to keep going for wins though; draws just don’t help anymore.

Things aren’t so different for Magdeburg though. They’re playing better, and they’re in a loftier position, but they’re only a few points away from the relegation battle themselves. They’re certainly not in a position to take this kind of game lightly; losing it could derail their campaign significantly at the business end of it. They need to stay focused, and as it’s their best chance of winning any of their remaining matches this season, I have to believe that they’ll go for maximum points rather than playing any games of chess.

To be fair to Magdeburg, they’ve played well lately anyway. They’ve put in some good shifts with their excellent possession football, and they’ve found it really easy to carve out opportunities. They’re not always taken, but they do tend to be at home. It surprises me that they’re doing as well as they are, though – Castaignos, Schuler, and Bell Bell are still amongst their absentees, for example, and Kwarteng (arguably their star of the season) has been out for almost a month now. It just goes to show how effective they are as a unit though.

They’re a nightmare to deal with though, Magdeburg. For all of their limitations, they play good football, have a strong mentality, and aren’t afraid to attack. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from them for a while now, and I fervently hope that they avoid the relegation battle because they contribute significantly to the Bundesliga 2 at the moment. Realistically speaking, they should be winning matches like this. It’s a great time to host SV Sandhausen, and they should be pushing for three points.

Something makes me unable to oppose SV Sandhausen though. At this stage of the season, they just seem to come alive from nowhere. I’ve seen them pull off outrageous results over the years, which have ended up keeping them in the division. Why not again now? Let’s not pretend that they’re the worst team in the division because they’re not. The worst defence, perhaps, but not the worst team; they’ve got several attackers that would walk into at least 50% of the Bundesliga 2’s clubs.

They just aren’t performing as a unit though; that’s the problem. That’s quite unlike them, too. They’re lucky to have the Kinsombis and Esswein there or else they’d already be relegated, in my view. I can’t write this team off, though. It should only take a positive result to get them going, and when they get into that headstrong place, they’re far more of a handful than the bookies would have you believe they are.

Therefore, as logical as backing the home win would be, I much prefer goals. I don’t see SV Sandhausen keeping Magdeburg out, and their requirement to win means throwing caution to the wind. With that in mind, an open game is to be expected, and thus hopefully goals too.

Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 117/100.

FC Honka Espoo vs SJK

KO: (UK time)

I shouldn’t like Honka as much as I do at the moment, but I do. I’m not going to read much into their derby defeat against HJK in their Veikkausliiga opener; that’s an occupational hazard in Finland.

Instead, I’m choosing to focus on the good things in their squad. For example, they’ve kept the faith with Vasara as manager, who knows this squad inside out by now. They’ve made good acquisitions whilst also keeping hold of key players. For example, Kaufmann is still an excellent match-winner at this level. They’ve re-signed Alegria from Rangers after his failed attempt to emulate Morelos, and Krebs/Jansen stuck around after a good first campaign in Finland.

I have some concerns over elements of their defence. I mean, Hernandez can be a bit wild at times, as can Banahene. Aalto has seen better days. It also feels like sometimes they favour brawn over brains. Nevertheless, this is me nit-picking; they’ve got good options compared to most Veikkausliiga outfits, and they are annoying to try and score against in general, especially with talented Rudakov between the sticks.

My main concern with Honka is the same one I always have with them; will they play as a team, or as individuals? They can win games via the latter approach but it’s not as easy in a division where chances do not flow freely. Still, there’s enough cohesion here for Honka to play as a team, particularly at home, and I have to believe that they’ll prove it against a predictable SJK side. Honka’s flaws may come to light another day, but it shouldn’t be today

.

Fortunately for the home team, their opponents are the epitome of a disaster in Finnish football. What started out as a really promising project years back rapidly became a running joke as they simply change managers all of the time, constantly sell/buy players, and never achieve anything. The outfit from Seinajoki seldom perform as a unit because they know that the current direction of the project will not last, and thus it’s quite easy to disrupt them, or unsettle them.

They still have some good players, of course – Dunwoody is one of their more consistent players. As ever though, there’s a lack of cohesion. Old heads like Hetemaj have gone, Jervis has moved to India, and what’s left requires gelling. It’s going to take more than a home win against Haka Valkeakoski for me to suddenly fear this team, capable though their individuals undeniably are.

For me, the home win at 91/100 is appealing – Honka should be able to control and win this game against a disjointed SJK side.

Verdict: FC Honka Espoo to win at 91/100.

BK Hacken Goteborg vs Kalmar FF

KO: (UK time)

Hacken surprised me by drubbing Hammarby in their Allsvenskan opener but fair play to them; it shows that last season was not simply a flash in the pan. I remember doubting them at the start of last season because of all the players they’d let go without replacing, but they sure did prove me wrong.

I like that they’ve not changed their approach this season either. It would have been easy to do so, given that they’re the champions, and they’ve got Europe in a couple of months. Instead, they’ve made low-key signings that will suit Hogmo’s approach more, and despite Jeremejeff’s latest jaunt to the continent, they still look lethal in the final third. I don’t quite know how they do it, but as a unit they’re a seriously impressive outfit, which no doubt causes for begrudgingly admiring glances from their neighbours, IFK Goteborg, who have plenty of money and bugger all by way of unity.

Hacken seem to be able to rely on younger and younger players. I mean, look at Traore! He did well in the Svenska Cupen, but then a hat-trick against Hammarby? It seems they’ve found another gem that will almost certainly end up in the Eredivisie before the end of 2023. By no means is he the only one though. Sadiq is beginning to show glimpses of the form he had at FC Nordsjaelland, Oden Larsen has been excellent, and their defence has looked really solid too. It’s a really healthy balance that they’ve established.

Consider all of the players that they have to come into their squad too. Kamara, Sana, Simon Gustafson, Turgott, Sonko – they all contribute different things, and they’re all good players. If Hacken are as good as they are now without them, imagine how good they’ll be in the months to come! I’m really quite taken with this team, just in case it’s not clear, and I can’t see them failing to impress me whilst hosting poor-travelling Kalmar FF.

I have to imagine that Kalmar FF would be most welcome in Goteborg here, given that they beat IFK Goteborg 2-0 last time out – Hacken fans will have loved that! They’re always a team to respect, the visitors, but a team that does struggle to impose themselves away from home. They’re industrious and possess strong mentalities, but they do lack quality when it matters – the perks of not having much money, I suppose. I admire what they are, though – they’re a very consistent club in general, and I love that Romarinho is still there too.

I think they’ll find this game a bit too tough though. Hacken is not the kind of team to take lightly anymore, and I don’t see the visitors making enough of their opportunities to cause an upset. I mean, Skrabb, Netabay, Romarinho, Hummet – it’s enough to unsettle half of the Allsvenskan, but not the top-half. Their defence is decent this time around but again, they’re just a bit out of their depth here.

I’m wary of giving picks that rely significantly on a quality gap but I don’t think that this is one of those picks. Hacken are working hard, there’s no arrogance in their squad, and they’ve got plenty of players that are hungry to prove themselves. I think they’ll negate any threats that Kalmar FF have, and outscore them, hence my interest in the -1 Asian Handicap.

Verdict: BK Hacken Goteborg to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 24/25.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
