We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Galatasaray vs Fatih Karagumruk

KO: (UK time)

Galatasaray need to keep winning to keep their Super Lig aspirations alive. They’ve got a healthy six-point buffer over Fenerbahce but will be uncomfortably aware that they’ve still got Besiktas JK away and Fenerbahce at home so there’s no room for complacency here. Fatih Karagumruk have had a good campaign, and are scoring goals for fun, but really need to try and win this one if they’re to keep their European aspirations alive, and playing that way in Istanbul is ill-advised. It may be tight, and there could be a lot of goals, but I still expect a Galatasaray victory.

Verdict: Galatasaray to win at 1/4.

SL Benfica vs Estoril

KO: (UK time)

Two straight losses have allowed both FC Porto and Sporting Braga into the title race. SL Benfica cannot afford any more errors. Winning at home against Estoril should not be all that challenging for them. The visitors are fighting for their lives but can’t score so anything but a home win here would be a surprise.

Verdict: SL Benfica to win at 9/100.

Featured game

Perth Glory vs Adelaide United

KO: (UK time)

I think it’s reasonable to expect goals in this game. Let’s face it; that’s hardly an uncommon theme in the A-League, is it? Glory are traditionally strong at home, and Adelaide United can be a bit ropey on the road. However, the circumstances of this game should make it interesting. Glory have to win both remaining matches to have any chance of making the play-offs; failure to do so means it’s game over for them. Adelaide United need to try and win this game to try and finish second in the table to avoid the first round of the play-offs but with the Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers having already won their respective matches rather convincingly this weekend, Adelaide United need to go for three points, particularly with their last game of the regular campaign coming against the Mariners next weekend.

Therefore, there’s always going to be someone that needs to score here. Adelaide United like to attack anyway; that’s nothing new. Glory aren’t too different, despite their usual 5-4-1 formation – Zadkovich does encourage players to get forward regularly. What I saw from Glory last weekend should make this game even more open and entertaining though. They boldly attempted a 4-4-2 away from home against Sydney FC, and although they had their moments, they were basically ripped to pieces. They should have lost far more convincingly than they did, to be honest – they were flayed open on a regular basis. Glory must win though – it’s that simple. Therefore, it’s likely they’ll attempt a similarly bold approach here; quite possibly another 4-4-2.

With that in mind, goals should really be on the horizon. Adelaide United’s finishing over the past month or two has been arguably the best in all of Australia. I can’t say that they’ve always played well, which is something that caught up with them during an off-day against Western United last time out. However, they’ve almost always scored their opportunities, and I expect that trend to continue, even without Clough. Goodwin is a class act, Halloran is dangerous, Ibusuki is back in form, and they’ve even got wonderkid Bernardo back now. The absence of Irankunda will hurt their capacity to kill the game on the break, but if Glory are as open here as they were against Sydney FC, it really shouldn’t matter.

Adelaide United do give chances away though. With Isaias getting on and D’Arrigo ok at best, they find themselves missing Juande as the screening midfielder. That leaves their defence more open. Veart has been favouring Barr over Popovic as a defensive partner for Warland lately, which makes sense when it comes to physicality and aerial ability. It doesn’t make sense with playing out from the back though; Barr struggles when pressed. Kitto at left-back is better at attacking than defending too, and right-back Lopez is no spring chicken anymore. In other words, there are holes there that other A-League teams have exploited this season, even if they’ve not got the result they desired as a consequence.

Don’t be duped into thinking that Glory aren’t good enough to win this game, just because of the league table. I can assure you that they’re more than capable. Whether they do or not remains to be seen. 4-4-2 is not their friend; they’re too open playing that way – but I get why they’ve started to do it. They do have some lethal players in the final third – Jelacic, Ryan Williams, and Taggart being spoon fed by Amini works for me. They’re a bit too easy to create chances against right now though, so I don’t see either team running the show here.

For me, this should be a high-scoring game.

Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 19/20.

Heidenheim vs Holstein Kiel

KO: (UK time)

Following Hamburger SV’s derby victory over St. Pauli on Friday, Heidenheim really need to beat Holstein Kiel if they’re to keep their automatic promotion place hopes alive. Given the budding rivalry between Hamburger SV and Holstein Kiel in recent years, I doubt the visitors would find that outcome too disagreeable, although they’re a very competitive bunch in general so don’t mistake me for saying that they’ll lie down and take it here; they won’t.

Still, it can’t be overlooked that Holstein Kiel do tend to enjoy making life for their opponents decidedly easy. Although having been in the Bundesliga 2 for a while now, they still bring a lower league mentality into their matches in the sense that they always want to attack. It’s a pure delight to watch, but it’s also sheer heart attack material for their fans, who have no idea if their team will score or concede four times in any given match.

The problem Holstein Kiel have with this approach nowadays is that they’re not particularly clinical. I find it hard to believe that that is the case, given that they’ve got Arp, Skrzybski, and Reese in their squad, but here we are. Suffice to say that they’ve missed Pichler a lot, and were probably quite drunk when making the decision to sign Wriedt. Holstein Kiel remain a very energetic and attack-minded outfit though, so they seldom leave matches without creating a flurry of opportunities – that’s the risk with opposing them.

Still, can Holstein Kiel really win three in a row here? It’d be pure madness for them to do so, given their complete inability to defend. I can stomach them edging wins against Nurnberg and Hansa Rostock, but now promotion hopefuls Heidenheim too? I just don’t see it. The potential is there, and again, they do create a lot of chances in general. They just don’t have a balance or a “Plan B” to call upon, and that’s a problem in a tough away game like this one.

Heidenheim enter this game with some momentum after claiming a good 3-0 win in Saxony against Hannover 96. Don’t let the result fool you, though – it was a pretty even game. It’s just that Kleindienst decided to destroy the home team in a fifteen minute spell, which ultimately decided the game. Hannover 96’s lack of firepower played a part, of course, but the game itself was pretty tight, and should have contained less goals than it did, but Heidenheim proved why they’re promotion candidates by being utterly ruthless.

I expect a similar kind of display here, to be honest. Sure, Heidenheim are always stronger at home than away, like most teams. However, they’re not going to engage Holstein Kiel in an open game because that’s pure madness. I expect Heidenheim to play the percentages game with them, perhaps even conceding the possession battle, because they know that they’ll be more clinical than Holstein Kiel for the majority of the time. They also know how to hold a lead, unlike their opponents.

I certainly don’t expect a massacre here, or a particularly polished display. At this stage of the season, it’s about working hard, believing in yourselves, and taking your chances; tactics tend to be thrown to the wind, as the Hamburg derby on Friday night proved. However, that kind of game suits Heidenheim more; they’ve got more match-winners, not least in Kleindienst. I won’t deny that Holstein Kiel are a very capable outfit but they often let themselves down, and there’s too much about this game that doesn’t suit them.

For me, the home win at 4/5 is worth considering.

Verdict: Heidenheim to win at 4/5.

SV Sandhausen vs Paderborn 07

KO: (UK time)

I warned you all last weekend of how good SV Sandhausen can be at this stage of the season, and they proved it by winning against Magdeburg. I’m not saying that they’ll overcome a far superior Paderborn 07 here, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did. They’ve claimed some big scalps in the Bundesliga 2 over the years when it’s matter the most, and given their perilous position in the league table, it matters a lot now. Besides, let’s not pretend that Paderborn 07 have been professional and disciplined in 2023; they’ve been far from it.

Whichever way this game goes though, there really should be goals. I rate SV Sandhausen’s attack rather highly, even though they still lack an actual striker. The Kinsombis are a nightmare to deal with, as is Esswein, so SV Sandhausen have good options. They’re under no illusions regarding their position either; they need to attack because they need to win. Therefore, they’re going to create chances, and even when losing they do tend to find the back of the net.

The colossal problem confronting the cellar dwellers is that their defence is utterly incapable of keeping opponents out. Barely a week goes by without one of their defenders making a horrendous error, and none of them have age/speed on their side. For a team that is now trying to actually win games via attacking football (thus including pushing up), that’s a pretty big problem. As much as I respect the fighting spirit and unity of SV Sandhausen, not to mention their sheer necessity to win, I just can’t bring myself to trust them to get something here.

I should be able to do so, though – Paderborn 07 are doing nothing for me at the moment. I appreciate that they’ve had big problems with availability up front in 2023 but it’s more than that; they’ve not been controlling games, not been defending well etc. It’s entirely their own fault that they’re not in the more serious conversations about which team will be automatically promoted. Instead they’re left hoping that the likes of Heidenheim mess up so they can at least try their hand at the play-offs.

I respect Paderborn 07’s ability enormously, though – they’re a very gifted attacking team. Indeed, on their day, it’s difficult to think of a more fluid and effective attacking beast than Paderborn 07, at least not in the Bundesliga 2. With only Pieringer out, and a slow and erratic defence confronting them, I’d like to believe that Paderborn 07 would prove it here. They do struggle to impose themselves away from home though, and that bothers me, especially in a match of such magnitude.

Still, much like their hosts, they appear hellbent on conceding as many goals as they can in 2023. They simply don’t have a steadfast defensive unit to rely upon. This group was assembled to attack and outscore teams, not to outplay them. They have that ability, but other teams have seen their vulnerabilities in 2023, and that’s made their form guide decidedly unpredictable. They remain the better team here, and I can understand why folks might be tempted by a flutter on the away win at 4/5, but I am not one of them. Paderborn 07 are not playing as well as they should be, and this is the time of season when SV Sandhausen tend to get their shit together.

Therefore, I’m far happier to roll with over 3 Asian goals at 34/25 because a draw or loss helps neither team in their respective battles. Both teams need to win, and both teams look far better getting forward than they do at defending.

Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 34/25.

Internacional vs Flamengo

KO: (UK time)

With both of these two teams having been in action in the Copa Libertadores midweek, it can be difficult to anticipate what kind of line-up will be utilised here. Flamengo only had to host Chile’s Deportivo Nublense, which they won 2-0, so I don’t anticipate too many changes there though. Internacional hosted Venezuela’s Metropolitanos, and overcame them 1-0, so they should be ok here. With that in mind, I believe it’s logical enough to expect goals in this contest, which is a common enough theme in the recent past.

Flamengo are considered to be the better team because of their endless well of money that continually sees them make the biggest signings in Brazil’s Serie A. However, they suffer because of it. There’s no team spirit at the Rio de Janeiro juggernauts. Yes, they’ve got more individual match-winners than any other team in the country, but they seldom impress collectively. That makes them vulnerable, especially away from home. Additionally, those players that are keen for the limelight when attacking are not often found whilst the team is defending…

Are they going to mark Henrique particularly well with the above in mind? I doubt it. Internacional may not be my favourite team to rely upon but they tend to be good at home, propelled by their fanatical fans, and they do have plenty of legs and skilful players in midfield with which to support their decent frontline. It’s not a perfect setup but it never is at this club anymore. I do trust them to give a reasonable account of themselves at home though.

As ever, my concern with Internacional lies in their screening role. They struggled with it like crazy last season because of Moledo’s injuries, and that won’t improve now that he’s seen as more of a bench-warmer. This in turn leaves their defence open. Now, man-for-man, this is quite a good Internacional defence so they’re not easy to score against. However, good teams will find a way to get at them – they’re not the fastest, for example, and most of them favour brawn over brains. It might be enough for most Serie A matches, but Flamengo at home? I doubt it, and that’s despite the visitors’ arrogance.

They may be lazy, but Flamengo know how to hurt teams. Bruno Henrique, Gabriel Barbosa, Marinho with de Arrascaeta, Ribeiro, and Maia supporting? And being managed by Sampaoli?! They’ll score goals, Flamengo. I still don’t trust them as much as I should be able to as hard work continues to evade them, which is something that is annoying the hell out of Sampaoli. The talent is there though, and it doesn’t take much for them to go and score a goal against any Brazilian team.

Much like Internacional, I don’t mind their defence man-for-man. However, much like their hosts, they don’t protect it well enough, although I’d argue that they’re worse at it than their hosts are. The experience is there, the ball-carriers out of defence are there, and the desire to win games is there, but the speed, protection, and togetherness is not so although Flamengo have the best squad in Brazil on paper, they seldom play like it – and that’s something Internacional can chip away at.

I won’t pick a winner here, but I rather like the idea of both teams scoring.

Verdict: Both teams to score at 91/100.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
