General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

SSC Napoli vs Salernitana

KO: (UK time)

Although the closest to a geographical derby that either team will get this season, I don’t expect any issues for Napoli here. They’ve not been at their best of late but with Osimhen back, it’s only a matter of time before they are. They’re at home, they’re hosting a team that they’re a lot better than – I can’t see beyond a home win.

Verdict: SSC Napoli to win at 11/50.

Sporting Braga vs Portimonense

KO: (UK time)

Oddly, Sporting Braga find themselves in the title race despite being an ‘outsider’ in Portuguese football for as long as I can recall. I don’t think that they’ll win it, but they’re certainly displaying the correct mentality to do so. Therefore, I can’t realistically doubt them overcoming poor-travelling Portimonense at home here, even with the visitors’ recent upswing in form in mind.

Verdict: Sporting Braga to win at 1/4.

Banker

Real Madrid vs Almeria

KO: (UK time)

Even though the title is now a complete dream for Real Madrid, they have to bounce back from their humiliating Girona defeat here. Failing to beat Almeria would not only heap pressure on the team, but also mean that Real Madrid then head into a horrible match against high-flying Manchester City with limited confidence. For me, they’re going to pull out all the stops to win this game, and Almeria should be powerless to resist them.

Verdict: Real Madrid to win at 4/25.

Featured game

Lugano vs Grasshopper Zurich

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

Lugano aren’t playing as efficiently as the form guide suggests. However, they are coping remarkably well with their absentees, and Croci-Torti’s tactical acumen is getting them through games. Take the St. Gallen game, for example – they were shocking in the first-half, but a few tweaks later, they dominated the second-half and turned the game around. With Celar back and Croci-Torti at the helm, little is impossible for Lugano right now, especially not beating Grasshopper Zurich at home.

The visitors have done well in front of goal lately; that bothers me. They’ve also been starting games strongly. However, I’m conscious that the form guide does flatter them. They’ve been taking their chances better than opposing teams but they’re not outplaying them, and they’re certainly not suppressing them. It’d be harsh to say it’s all luck, but it’s not far from the truth. They’ve got good individuals, Grasshopper Zurich, but are still yet to find a way to make it work as a team, which is probably why Contini has said he’s leaving at the end of the season.

For me, this should really be a home win; I can see Lugano grinding past them.

Verdict: Lugano to win at 83/100.

Additional games

Macarthur FC vs Wellington Phoenix

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

I feel a little bit harsh on Macarthur FC by opposing them here. I’ve not had much to complain about them of late. They’re making the best of a bad situation but haven’t had the personnel or the breaks to make the most of what has essentially been improved displays under Sterjovski, who was rewarded earlier this week with the permanent position rather than the interim role. Their tactics are smart, and they’re playing to their strengths, but too much is going against them right now.

Macarthur FC have to win this game, which means no more sitting and countering. That is going to be problematic as their defence is slow. Phoenix have hardly been amazing lately but they’ve had tough games too so I can forgive them. A draw would be enough for the Kiwis; that’s my worry here. Still, they can’t go into the play-offs without a win, and I have to believe that Zawada and co. can make the most of the space that Macarthur FC will inevitably leave in behind here.

I doubt it’ll be particularly professional, nor the assured kind of display I’d prefer, but the away win should happen.

Verdict: Wellington Phoenix to win at 91/100.

Perth Glory vs Western United

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

I know that Western United are hoping for a fond farewell to their retiring duo, Diamanti and Topor-Stanley, but I’m not sure they’ll find themselves welcome in Perth. I expect them to roll with a 4-4-2 now that they’ve got nothing left to lose, as Aloisi has made it blatantly apparent that his 4-2-3-1 is now decidedly outdated/ineffectual. 4-4-2 is the future for them, and Glory’s defence is their weakest area so it’d make sense for Western United to have a go here. I don’t see it ending how they want it too though.

Glory need the points, for starters. They’re very strong at home, and their energy levels and tenacity makes them very annoying to deal with. Their attack is really strong now Taggart is leading their line, and the likes of Ryan Williams and Jelacic get better every time I see them play. Glory are currently paying the price for a bad start to their campaign, not having a bad squad. I actually rather like where they’re at. They’re clinical, industrious, and mentally tough – that’s enough to beat Western United nowadays.

Verdict: Perth Glory to win at evens.

Maccabi Netanya vs MS Ashdod

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

There’s not really much to play for here. Both teams have already surpassed expectations by making to the top six of the Ligat Ha’al; anything beyond that is a bonus. Chances are good that Beitar Jerusalem or Maccabi Tel-Aviv will win the State Cup, and if it’s the latter, then fighting for fourth place could be worthwhile but it’s a gamble of long odds, really. They need to focus on what’s at hand, which is simply playing for pride at the moment.

That said, this is something of a curtain-raiser as the two teams lock horns in the State Cup next week; one of them will be in the final. It seems to me that the visitors are taking that competition more seriously – the Israeli media are suggesting that key defender Cvetkovic could be rested today for it. That, fused with their confirmed absentees of Ben-Zaken, Can’an, Cooperman, and Sabag – it’s got to be too much for them here. They don’t have enough depth to cope without those players.

Therefore, assuming Maccabi Netanya don’t rest their starting eleven, they should win this game. They’re without less players than their opponents, they’re at home, and they have a very dangerous attack too. I don’t think that Maccabi Netanya will get a better chance than this to beat MS Ashdod, relative dead rubber or not, so I have to fancy the home win here.

Verdict: Maccabi Netanya to win at 6/5.

Schalke 04 vs Werder Bremen

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

Even though Fullkrug is out for the visitors, I still think that they’ll make this game entertaining. That’s Bremen’s way; they bring attacking football into every match. It doesn’t always pan out how they want it to, but they still keep doing it. That’s their traditional way. The thing is that, even without Fullkrug, they’re likely to hurt a suspect Schalke 04 side. They might not win because, well, let’s face it – Fullkrug is their best forward. I still expect them to give a good account of themselves though, given what’s at stake, and at no point in history have I ever trusted them to keep a clean sheet.

Despite an undressing in Freiburg last time out, there’s no time for Schalke 04 to lick their wounds. They need to bounce back, and hosting a Fullkrug-less Bremen is the perfect way for them to do so as it’s a winnable fixture, and they need points. Schalke 04 have played with more passion over the past month or two, even though overall quality is still an issue. They will get their chances here; Bremen will see to that. I’m not sure they’re mentally tough enough to beat Bremen right now, though – time will tell.

Whichever way this one goes, it’s hard to imagine it not containing goals.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 21/25.

Servette vs St. Gallen

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

It’s a good time to face St. Gallen. It feels a bit like too many cooks spoil the broth at the moment. They’ve got amazing individuals, but a combination of too many of them plus Zeidler’s need for rotation has hurt them, in my opinion. Their lack of continuity has made them weaker at both ends. They’re too easy to anticipate now, and their passing is a lot ‘safer’ than normal. This is a team that prides itself on their capacity to make more of situations than their opponents so playing without gusto is fatal for them. They’re getting a lot wrong despite being a very capable team.

Servette weren’t much better up until recently. Despite the one-sided scoreline, their attacking improved against Young Boys Bern. Then they annihilated FC Zurich midweek in a very convincing display, although FC Zurich were crap, to be fair. Servette are confident again, they’ve got most of their injured players back, and they’ve picked a fine time to face St. Gallen. No, I don’t trust Servette’s defence but I trust them to do enough at home to outscore their predictable opponents right now.

Verdict: Servette to win at 6/5.

Palmeiras vs Corinthians

KO: (UK time)

Apologies for the brief previews today, folks. I’ve got stuff going on in my personal life that means I don’t have as much time as normal. Don’t worry – normal service will resume shortly.

Sao Paulo derby or not, Palmeiras should be comfortable enough here. Corinthians haven’t been a good team in years. They’ve had good individuals, but have seldom performed well as a unit, no matter what they’ve tried. They’ve struggled so far this season – in every competition – and are still without midfield controller Renato Augusto. They look slow and predictable, and it’s hard to imagine Palmeiras being charitable in this situation.

Nowadays, Palmeiras tend to have a solution for most problems. They lose good players but they find good replacements. I can’t say that they’re quite as meticulous now as they were a couple of years back, but they’re still a handful. They’re going to be in the mixer for the Serie A title this season, and they’re hosting a team that they’re faster than, more energetic than, and more clinical than. The handicap may be a tad bold but at the least Palmeiras should win this game, which would activate the insurance aspect of it.

Verdict: Palmeiras to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 51/50.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
