General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Slavia Prague vs Hradec Kralove

KO: (UK time)

With local rivals Sparta Prague actually presenting some kind of title fight this season, it’s imperative that Slavia Prague keep winning. That shouldn’t be a tall order for them, especially not whilst hosting Hradec Kralove, who no longer have anything left to play for.

Verdict: Slavia Prague to win at 13/100.

Banker

Viktoria Plzen vs Teplice

KO: (UK time)

The quality gap should be too big here. Teplice may have special powers of survival when it comes to home matches, but they tend to be consistently poor away from home, and Plzen are one of the best teams in the country on their day. For me, it’s a home win.

Verdict: Viktoria Plzen to win at 11/50.

Bayern Munich vs Hertha Berlin

Full preview below.

Verdict: Bayern Munich to win at 11/100.

07 Vestur Sorvagur vs HB Torshavn

KO: (UK time)

I may not be blown away by the current HB side but they should be good enough to beat lowly 07 Vestur Sorvagur, home or away. The geographical challenges of away games in the Faroe Islands are known to me but even so, anything other than a HB win would surprise me.

Verdict: HB Torshavn to win at 3/10.

Banker

FC Porto vs Boavista

KO: (UK time)

With SL Benfica slightly buckling under pressure of late, it’s imperative that FC Porto keep the heat turned up. That means winning this game. Boavista’s recent displays have been impressive though, and they’ll be tough to overcome. At a loaded Dragao though, I trust FC Porto to do enough, especially as Boavista are all but guaranteed safety from relegation now.

Verdict: FC Porto to win at 9/50.

Featured game

Bayern Munich vs Hertha Berlin

KO: (UK time)

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that I like this Bayern team, folks, because I do not. However, they know how to win titles, and this is the time of the season when they tend to shine. They’ve got no other competitions to distract them anymore, and subsequently I expect them to really show up here, particularly after the embarrassment in Mainz. They should be aided by Goretzka and Coman too, although I’m far happier about the former than the latter, to be frank. I don’t think I’ll ever understand why folks rate Coman as highly as they do; he’s got no end product for the vast majority of the time, although he’s a gifted dribbler.

I don’t really have any idea what they’re doing behind the scenes anymore either. They recently said they need a striker, a mere nine months or so since selling arguably the best striker in the world without spending big bucks to replace him. Oh, you reckon so?! Then there’s the manager drama. I didn’t think that Nagelsmann fit in at Bayern but I also don’t think he was given enough time for them to find out. Now they’ve gone for Tuchel, whom I like a lot, but with no clear direction at the club anymore, it’s impossible to gauge as to how successful this appointment will be.

Then there’s weird signings like Blind, Mazraoui, and the drama surrounding Mane of late. In other words, this isn’t a team that I’d trust very often anymore. It didn’t used to be that way, but it is now. They’re nowhere near the level that they used to be, even at home. They’ve got enough individual quality to decide games in their favour, should they wish to, but they’re simply not a reliable source anymore.

So why the -2.5 Handicap, huh? Simple – Hertha are a joke. They’ve been ablaze for quite some years now except this year looks like it might finally be the one where they get relegated. It’s sad, really, especially for eastern Germany. I was excited about their most project when it was first announced a few years back but it’s just gone horribly, whether you look at the constant adding and removal of Dardai as manager, the constant signing of players without any real direction, or you look at their lack of work ethic in matches. This is a team to oppose at every conceivable opportunity, in other words.

The visitors now find themselves in a position whereby a draw in Munich is not a great result. They have to try and win, and that’s a fatal approach here. They are scoring goals at the moment, the capital club, but they’re conceding so many that it’s hard to take them seriously here. I don’t doubt that they’ll give Bayern some headaches, even with the likes of Jovetic, Serdar, and Richter out – Lukebakio alone can do that.

Their defence is a disaster zone though. They don’t know how to mark, how to track runners, and their midfield doesn’t protect their defenders adequately. Confidence is low, and they’re now playing the best team in Germany away from home – and unusually, Bayern have not already won the title; far from it. They need to win, just as much as Hertha do, albeit for different reasons. The difference is that Bayern have big game players with big game mentalities; Hertha do not.

Therefore, whether the capital club make a spirited go of this game or not, I expect the Bavarians to demolish them, simply put. They may concede en route, but if Bayern don’t score four or five here then they need to ask themselves some serious questions. Hertha aren’t just unlucky to be at the bottom of the table; they’re there because they don’t work hard enough, and don’t want it enough. Bayern should eat a team like that for breakfast, irrespective of their own shortcomings.

Verdict: Bayern Munich to beat the -2.5 Handicap at 89/100.

Additional games

FC Zurich vs FC Sion

KO: (UK time)

I’m expecting a dreadful match here, to be completely frank. Alright, FC Zurich tend to play better at home but they’ve been utterly atrocious in two of their last three matches, going down without so much as a whimper against both Servette and Luzern respectively. They look more measured on their own patch, at least – they control games better, defend more compactly, and so on. They really shouldn’t fail to beat FC Sion here. However, this is a pressure cooker match in the relegation battle, and that makes the 1×2 market unappealing to me.

FC Sion may be crap, but they have improved of late. I wouldn’t say that their displays have improved under Bettoni, and their style certainly hasn’t changed, but they have taken their chances surprisingly well for a team that has, more often than not, been denied the services of a striker in 2023. They’ve reverted to being an overly defensive team now because Bettoni, like all the managers before him, has realised that they just don’t have the work-rate nor variety to play in any other manner than to frustrate, and then counter.

Both of these two teams are decidedly cautious nowadays, and they’re both quite good at it, given the correct circumstances. Omeragic and Katic hold things together well at the back for the home team, their midfield is physical and combative, and their attack is now quite varied too with boss Henriksen no longer exclusively relying on a target man. This is a solid enough FC Zurich team, in other words, and one that should absolutely not be seriously considered as relegation fodder – but they’re still in that battle, and that means being ultra cautious because losing this game would be fatal for them.

The same can be said for FC Sion too, of course. They’d fancy their chances of picking up more points than FC Winterthur as the season progresses but they’ve diced with relegation for a few years now, and this might be the year that they finally go down if they’re not careful. Let’s face it – mentally, they’re a weak team. They don’t create enough. They’ve had to call up youngster Zagre to play up front because Balotelli is always out, and there is nobody else. This is not a great team. They’ve got some excellent individuals, and their tactics are semi-effective, but they have more weaknesses than they’d like to admit.

I won’t go near the 1×2 market, as I said above, especially given that this is the third game in a week for both teams so we may see some rotation. I don’t know if FC Zurich will react positively to their shambolic showing last time out or not, and I don’t know if FC Sion are capable of bouncing back from any defeat nowadays, although I have to admit that they did deserve at least a point from the game against FC Basel last weekend.

I do rather like the odds available on under 2.5 goals though. Should either team score, then I expect them to sit on it, and that’s what they both do rather well. Both will be eager to not make early mistakes, given the importance of the fixture, and both are decidedly cautious in the final third anyway. I’d also argue that both are far more effective in the final third when granted space, and neither defence on show here does that religiously.

Therefore, under 2.5 goals is my poison at 27/25.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 27/25.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
