We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Excelsior Rotterdam vs Feyenoord Rotterdam

KO: (UK time)

Two wins, and the title belongs to Feyenoord; it’s that simple. I can’t see them fucking it up now. Derby or not, this is a game that they should be able to take three points from, especially if they continue to display the same level of focus as they have recently.

Verdict: Feyenoord Rotterdam to win at 1/5.

Featured game

Malmo FF vs AIK Solna

KO: (UK time)

Although two of Sweden’s biggest clubs, the gulf between them nowadays is quite staggering. Malmo FF always pump money into the right areas of their squad, and thus always have the best squad in the Allsvenskan, whether their displays help them to the title or not. AIK Solna like to bring in big names too but seldom do it enough, and when they do, they seem to bring in players just because of their names rather than signing players that fit into their method of playing.

Truth be told, I’m not so sure that AIK Solna even have a clearly defined style anymore. They lack soul and togetherness. They don’t lack quality in the slightest, but the more I see of the capital club, the more they remind me of their bitter rivals, IFK Goteborg – soulless, and predictable. Their defence holds firm because they’re too cautious by nature, and they’ve got some good players back there, particularly Milosevic. Still, they’re up against arguably the best team in the country tonight, and they’re likely to be without one of their more seasoned defenders – Papagiannopoulos – and that’s another issue.

There’s no way that AIK Solna should be like they are though. I mean, even in a post-Goitom era, they’ve managed to establish an attack with Guidetti leading the line, flanked by Fischer, supported by Hussein and Jimmy Durmaz, not to mention the talented Thill (also a doubt today) and a couple of very promising youngsters. With the right manager and the right approach, this attack will score goals. Instead, they look terrified of being on the ball in their opponents’ half, and it makes them too easy to play against.

As capable as AIK Solna unquestionably are, opposing them is something I find a lot easier today than I probably should. They’ve not scored in three games now. They’ve only shown up in one match this season, which was their big derby against Hammarby. Lesser teams have found it very straightforward to deal with them, and I can only expect more of the same from Malmo FF. The home team may not run around as crazily as the other teams AIK Solna have faced recently, but they keep the ball superbly, and AIK Solna do not have a robust approach to get it back so it’s hard to be optimistic about their chances here.

Malmo FF may not work as hard as most of the Allsvenskan teams but it’s because they don’t have to. They know they’ve got better players than those around them, and they know how to prove it. Some of their games are incredibly even but they’ll still run our 3-0 or 4-0 winners because they’ve got a wealth of talent in attack e.g. Kiese-Thelin, Vecchia, Rieks, Christiansen, and many more besides. They always manage to replace the players that they inevitably lose to bigger/richer clubs too, so they’ll always be in the title race.

I think the scariest thing about Malmo FF this season is that we’re yet to see them at their best and yet they’ve already won all six matches, bagging thirteen goals in their last three matches alone. Yes, that’s right – imagine how good they’ll be when Moisander and Tinnerholm are fit at the back! They’re just deadly, Malmo FF, no matter what you think about their actual performances. Give them chances, and they’ll score goals. Let them dominate possession, and they’ll punish you – and I expect AIK Solna to do the latter.

Malmo FF do have some weaknesses but none that the likes of AIK Solna should expose. I do think that the capital club will make it hard to score here, and when Malmo FF take the lead, they’ll be quite content to sit on it so that’s my only real concern with this pick, although that in itself would result in the insurance element of my pick being activated. I still think that Malmo FF will find it easy to dominate this game though, and as they showed against Varberg, scoring goals is very easy for them when they do so I’ll take my chances here.

Verdict: Malmo FF to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 89/100.

Additional games

Eintracht Braunschweig vs SV Sandhausen

KO: (UK time)

Everybody else seems to think that this will be a low-scoring affair, which I find a bit odd. German football by default is rather attacking and confident; you don’t find many teams that will simply ‘park the bus’, and outside of Hannover 96, none of them do it very often. What we have in this do-or-die affair is an SV Sandhausen side that must win, and an Eintracht Braunschweig side that cannot lose, and should really go for the win. To me, in a division where goals are commonplace, that should produce a high-scoring affair – and that’s just the logical conclusion without delving into the finer details.

I mean, if you want finer details, consider that SV Sandhausen have no idea how to defend. No idea whatsoever. I watched their game against Jahn Regensburg last time out, and I’ve no clue how they only conceded one, especially in the second-half. Before the red card, Jahn Regensburg beguiled their opponents with simple long balls over the top, which SV Sandhausen repeatedly failed to deal with. A better goal-scoring side than them would have scored two or three, and I have to believe that Eintracht Braunschweig fall into that category.

However, there’s simply no denying that this is SV Sandhausen’s time of year, if I can put it that way. They thrive at the end of season because they’re usually in a relegation battle, just as they are now. A win here would give them a very real chance of staying up, and it’s their easiest remaining game too, given that they’re still to travel to Heidenheim and host Hamburger SV, although they do have a hilariously good record against the latter when playing them at this stage of the season.

I’d also point out that SV Sandhausen have improved under their new manager. Sure, their defence is a car crash, but don’t go underestimating their offensive potential. A lot of their striker experiments have failed this season, which is sad, but the Kinsombis and Esswein keep them in matches. The visitors have plenty of speed on the break, and are used to conceding goals so they try to play on the front foot. Again, they’ve got to go for the win here so as far as I am concerned, they’re going to invite high-scoring games for the rest of the season.

Will Eintracht Braunschweig ‘join the party’? I suppose that’s the bigger question here. I’m sure they fear losing more than they’d value winning, but they’re not exactly in a great position themselves at the moment, making far too many defensive mistakes, and frequently being punished for it. They were destroyed 5-1 by Paderborn 07 last time out, and shipped two at home against Magdeburg last time out too.

I’d actually argue that the circumstances favour the visitors here. One thing that has become painfully clear over time is that Eintracht Braunschweig prefer to be underdogs. Here, they’re favourites – and they don’t tend to thrive in such scenarios. Indeed, were they not facing an inept SV Sandhausen defence, I would not bank on them scoring. That said, Ujah is coming into form at the right time, and he’s worthy of playing in the Bundesliga on his day. Pherai is a handful, and even Lauberbach has played well lately, even if his finishing is catastrophic.

I believe that, whether they want it or not, Eintracht Braunschweig will be forced into a high-scoring match here. I can’t make up my mind if they’ll get what they want from the game or not, although I do have a leaning toward the visitors. I do believe that Eintracht Braunschweig will contribute though, and that’s all I’m really looking for here. Given the circumstances of both teams, backing over 2.5 goals simply makes sense to me at 4/5 – neither look remotely capable of defending a lead.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

FC Basel vs FC Zurich

KO: (UK time)

I shouldn’t fancy FC Basel in “Der Klassiker” as much as I do. Their defence was bad enough before when they were effectively left without Comas and Frei, especially with boss Vogel not really seeming to trust Adams. Now they’ve also lost Calafiori and Pelmard to injury, which almost certainly will lead to a back three containing at least one full-back, if not two. This is already FC Basel’s weakest area; it should bother me that they’re in such a position. It doesn’t, though, because their problems pale in comparison to those of FC Zurich.

For whatever reason, FC Zurich have stopped working as hard. It’s not as obvious at home as it is on the road. Everybody knows that they had a shocking start to their title defence campaign but I promise you they were far, far worse against both Luzern and Servette recently than in any of their games at the start of the season. They didn’t create in those games, didn’t close down space, and were basically ripped to pieces. Their home displays have been marginally better but away from home they’ve become horrendous, and I really can’t figure out what’s changed. Henriksen is a notoriously good motivator so it’s blown my mind, really.

FC Basel have improved lately. I still think that they’re lacking when it comes to chance creation, though. If a team sits back and defends compactly against them, then they’re totally ineffectual – and FC Zurich can do that to them. However, in recent times they’ve been a lot more clinical, and FC Basel are a lot more impressive at seeing out a lead than they are at trying to get one so they’ve been winning matches.

I am a shade bothered that FC Basel may rest players here ahead of their match against ACF Fiorentina on Thursday. However, there’s plenty of time between now and then, the game against FC Zurich is still a substantial derby, and quite honestly I don’t see how many changes they could realistically make at this time due to absentees. Therefore, I think they’ll name as strong a squad as they can, and if they do, then they should win, really. Keep in mind how good Amdouni has been lately. Diouf’s absence isn’t ideal but I think they’ll have enough in their squad to control this game, and threaten more than FC Zurich.

FC Zurich have a capable squad; don’t get me wrong now. It’s just that they’ve lost their motivation and effectiveness lately, which I find a bit weird. Playing Marchesano as a strike partner doesn’t seem the best use of his talents but the spot that used to be his is now considered a defensive midfield slot instead, and is occupied by Conde. Bluntly put, if he doesn’t play up front, he doesn’t make the squad. Fusing that with Okita only really being dangerous with space or with balls in behind…well, let’s just say that FC Zurich are somewhat predictable when attacking.

As ever, midfield is the visitors’ strength, especially with Guerrero back on the left now after a long time out. Dzemaili and Matthew are solid enough there, and won’t give much away. Unusually, they’ve encountered problems in defence recently. Katic has been benched more than normal, and as one of their best defenders, that’s odd. If anything I’d have thought they’d bench Omeragic, who’s already said he’ll leave for free in the summer (SC Freiburg is mooted to be his destination). Without Katic there though, they lack their usual dependency, and make no mistake – FC Zurich were not built to come from behind but rather to get the first goal and sit on it.

In short, I expect a very tactical affair here between two teams desperate not to concede the first goal. I don’t envision it being a classic, but one of these two teams is taking their chances a lot more ruthlessly at the moment, and that’s FC Basel. Therefore, I’ll back them to do the business here.

Verdict: FC Basel to win at 11/10.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
