Palmeiras vs Gremio

KO: (UK time)

Despite Luis Suarez inspiring Gremio to a positive start upon their return to Serie A, I fear they’re out of their depth here. It’s not just him, of course – Nathan, Silva, Vina, Cristaldo, and Galdino have all played their part too. Still, they’re into the belly of the beast here; not many escape from away games against Palmeiras without being beaten nowadays, and I think that the Porto-Alegrense outfit are going to find something similar here.

Without wanting to sound too harsh on Gremio here, I’d perhaps argue that they’ve not had the hardest of re-introductions to Serie A with home games against Santos and RB Bragantino, and away games against Cruzeiro (promoted with them) and Cuiaba). You can only beat what’s in front of you, I suppose, but let’s just say that tougher tests await this somewhat limited team, and this is arguably the toughest of the lot.

Mentally, Gremio are in a decent enough position to make a game of it. They’re still ‘new’ at this level so they’re approaching each match with gusto, and believing that they can get something positive from it. It’s not like they’ve got a dreadful team so again, I’m positive that they’ll give Palmeiras some problems to think about.

However, the visitors are known throughout Brazilian football for being poor travellers, and it’s fair to say that they’re far better at attacking than defending. That approach might see them win certain games, or at least cause more problems than anticipated, but I think it’d be naïve to head to Sao Paulo tonight with that intent. I don’t really see much of an alternative for them though, and Palmeiras sure do enjoy it when teams attack them.

Because of how good they’ve become, Palmeiras are used to having to try to break teams down nowadays; they head there to play cautiously, more often than not. Well, the Brazilian version of ‘cautiously’, anyway! When teams open up – well, let’s just say that Endrick, Artur, Dudu etc. have a lot of fun. A good manager like Abel Ferreira knows how to make the most of such situations, which is why Palmeiras tend to win most of their games.

Interestingly, they’ve been a tad lackadaisical in defence this season, which isn’t what I’d expect from a Gomez-led back four. It’s not something that massively perturbs me but they do have odd moments where they lose concentration, and it costs them. Take the Corinthians win, for example. They were cruising to a 2-0 win before conceding a totally unnecessary goal at the death. Normally, Palmeiras keep their composure and concentration for enough time to keep clean sheets.

Even so though, they’re ridiculously good at scoring goals nowadays so again, I’m not worried about them conceding here. My only real concern is that they’ve not long been back from Ecuador, where they claimed a good win against Barcelona Guayaquil. However, it’s important to note that Guayaquil is a coastal city (i.e. no altitude readjustment required) and that they’ve got a big enough squad to rotate accordingly so again, it’s not enough to deter me.

As plucky and ballsy as Gremio are, I expect them to be outclassed and out-thought by a supreme Palmeiras side tonight, to phrase it bluntly. There’s a chance that they may only win by a solitary goal but that’s what the insurance element of the pick is there for. I don’t envision many scenarios arising whereby Palmeiras fail to make the most of this situation so for me, the -1 Asian Handicap appeals.

Verdict: Palmeiras to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 93/100.

Santos vs Bahia

KO: (UK time)

Santos don’t have a particularly flattering record against Bahia and it’s because they’re not sure how to defeat teams that work harder than they do. What Bahia lack in quality, they make up for in industry. Defeating them – particularly away from home – is very taxing. It’s by no means impossible, but they know how to annoy their opponents in general, and they certainly know how to annoy the likes of Santos.

There’s no denying that Santos have the better individuals, of course. They’re a cornerstone of Brazil’s Serie A, having produced a plethora of world-class footballers over the years. These days though, they’re an underwhelming team – and I use the term “team” as loosely as I can because they don’t play as a team. All they ever play as is a group of individuals. Luckily, they’ve got players like Lucas Lima and Soteldo that are good enough to decide games in their favour. If that doesn’t work though, then there is no “Plan B”, hence their perpetually inconsistent form.

Santos are lucky enough to have a constant supply of talented youngsters though. Some of them are forced through a bit too early but the talent is there. I still can’t make up my mind on Marcos Leonardo but he has his moments too. There’s generally enough there for Santos to at least threaten. On the road, I’m a bit more dubious about that, but not many home games go by without them scoring, whether it’s merited or not. Therefore, expecting them to bag at least once at home against Bahia is not a particularly big ask on my part.

Defensively speaking though, Santos remain a joke. Not working hard enough obviously plays a part, but there’s a lack of quality in defence too, not to mention a lack of work behind the scenes to improve their personnel in that area. One of these days, it’ll be what gets them relegated – well, that and their lack of work ethic. Never trust Santos to keep clean sheets, folks, because even when they do, it’s usually by accident.

Bahia are in a rich vein of form at the moment. No, they’ve not beaten anybody that’s particularly good, but three wins on the bounce has done plenty of good for their confidence levels, and I already mentioned how hard this team works anyway. They’ve scored in all of their recent matches, irrespective of how it’s gone, and I see no reason to believe that they’d suddenly break the chain here.

Renato Paiva’s boys aren’t especially good but a combination of experience, luck on their side, and sheer willpower has allowed them to cause problems so far this season. Yes, they’ll invariably drop off at some stage because they’ll run out of legs but for the next few months, I see no reason to doubt Bahia as being a typically bullish, combative, and dangerous team, especially against opponents that won’t work as hard as them.

For me, Everaldo, Acevedo, Cauly, and co. should be able to make this game interesting, hence my both teams to score pick.

Verdict: Both teams to score at 19/20.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.

UEFA Champions League:

Milan vs Internazionale (5) 2-1, at least one red card in this game

Brazilian Serie A:

Santos vs Bahia (5) 2-1
RB Bragantino vs America Mineiro (5) 0-0
Internacional vs Athletico Paranaense (6) 1-0
Flamengo vs Goias (6) 2-0
Cuiaba vs Atletico Mineiro (5) 0-1
Palmeiras vs Gremio (6) 2-0
Cruzeiro vs Fluminense (5) 1-1

Accumulator of the day

Palmeiras vs Gremio = Palmeiras win, Santos vs Bahia = over 1.5 goals

Odds = 109/100.
