Today’s secondary featured game is the Serie A encounter between Udinese and AS Roma. Hosts Udinese have played some of the best football in Serie A this season and visitors AS Roma like to think that they are capable of a similar boast so we should hopefully see a good game between these two sides today.

The hosts have already won ten out of fifteen home games this season whilst averaging scoring over 1.5 goals per home game so they certainly bring a strong offensive threat into each game. Their attack containing highly-sought after Alexis Sanchez and veteran Antonio Di Natale has been untouchable this season and that’s why they’d gone thirteen Serie A games without defeat prior to their last match. However, a lacklustre display against enthusiastic Lecce in southern Italy saw Udinese crash and burn to a 2-0 defeat whilst in the knowledge that it could have been worse for them. It’ll be interesting to see how they bounce back today, especially with essential midfielder Inler absent. They welcome back Pinzi, which will help, but against the strong midfield of Roma, it’s hard to see Udinese having their usual dominance here.

Visitors AS Roma haven’t convinced me under Montella, primarily because he’s an inexperienced manager, I daresay. Their 0-2 defeat at home to out-of-form Juventus last match illustrated that perfectly. Roma have shipped ten goals in six games since Montella took over as he looks to make the Roman outfit even more attacking, which has its successes as well as its failures. In De Rossi, Simplicio, and Totti they have a terrific midfield and in Vucinic, Menez, and Borriello, they have a lot of goals, hence Roma’s continual threat on goal. However, despite talented French centre-back Mexes at the back, Roma’s defence simply looks likely to crumble every time that they’re attacked and that explains why they’ve conceded so many goals lately. Well, they’ve shipped goals all season long, to be fair – they appear to be conceding more than normal under Montella, however, which has to be concerning for them!

For some reason, Roma have simply never managed to produce the goods consistently away from home and that may well be the case today. However, with essential midfielder Inler absent for the hosts and a defeat leading their hosts into this game, Roma are unlikely to have a better chance to get a result at Udinese than they have today so we should see an interesting game here, especially given how strong Roma’s midfield is. Udinese’s attack is more than good enough to score at least once here but with Inler absent, I sense that the hosts are in for a more difficult game today than they’ve been used to over the past few months.

For me, this game screams “goals” so my call is over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Team news – Udinese miss Inler whereas AS Roma miss Julio Sergio.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Atletico Huracan vs Racing Club Avellaneda – home win with draw no bet at evens.

People have a habit of underestimating Huracan but I’m not one of them. Defensively, they’re an assured side and now that they’ve added numerous attacking options to their team, they look a lot stronger. They’ve only lost twice in eight Primera Division games and both of those were away from home. Huracan have won twice and drawn twice in their four home games and with ten goals scored in their past five games, I think it’s about time that Huracan are taken much more seriously than they currently are.

Giants Racing Club Avellaneda aren’t an easy side to face. Indeed, they have one of the best defenders still playing in Argentina in Cahais and they’re hard to beat when he’s organising their defence. However, not only have Racing lost three times in a row ahead of this game but they’ve also lost regular defender Martinez for this encounter, which is a big blow. It’s not so much that they’ve lost three games in a row that concerns me but more the fact that it’s typical Racing to have a strong squad and to play like morons. They lost their most recent game 1-2 against lowly Tigre and were drubbed 4-1 at Atletico Lanus prior to that, which means that they’ve shipped seven goasl in three games. Considering that Racing don’t score many goals, even now that they’ve re-signed prodigal son Zuculini, they’re not in the best of places at the moment. To cap that off, they’re missing attacking Colombian midfielder Moreno tonight and he also brings them a lot of goals from midfield so things just seem to have gone from bad to worse for tonight’s visitors.

For me, Huracan are the epitome of a united side wheres Racing are seemingly still a bunch of random individuals. With that in mind, the home win with draw no bet cover at evens appeals to me here.

Team news – Racing Club Avellaneda miss Matias Martinez and Giovanni Moreno.

Verdict: Atletico Huracan to win with draw no bet at evens.

Real Cartagena vs Deportes Tolima – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

On one hand, we have Real Cartagena, who are only good at home. They’ve only played ten games of the current Primera A campaign and they already average conceding nearly two goals per game, a record which only Atletico Huila can “better”. Their defending can be appalling at times but their attack is talented and no doubt that’ll show here. Visitors Deportes Tolima are unquestionably the better of these two sides but with this game being their third game in six days, it’s hard to imagine them being 100% for the game, especially with players likely to rested for their game at Guarani Asuncion in Paraguay next week looming large. Tolima are an attacking side by nature and will most likely score here but with Cartagena likely to attack too, you have to favour over 2.5 goals here with all of the above taken into consideration.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Hrvatski Dragovoljac vs Slaven Koprivnica – away win at 6/4.

The hosts have been in inspired form since their return from the winter break and they’ve troubled a lot of Prva Liga sides as a result. However, the underlying factor is that they’re still short on quality and although that’s not showing at the moment, there are some sides good enough to expose it and that should be visible today. Hrvatski Dragovoljac aren’t the side to face if you’re not determined to play well and work hard against them but they should find both of those things from Slaven Koprivnica today. Why? Well, Slaven Koprivnica’s new boss caused a stir after winning his first game in charge by dropping four important Slaven Koprivnica players for their cup game against Dinamo Zagreb. They knew they had no chance so they dropped Vojnovic, Bagaric, Puric, and Busic for that game in order for them to be fit and ready for this game today. Slaven are very much taking this game seriously and they’re giving the hosts all the respect that they deserve here. Although I rarely bet on Slaven away from home, I think that they should be able to beat arguably the worst side in the Prva Liga today, irrespective of the form of the hosts. Therefore, the away win at 6/4 appeals to me here.

Team news – Hrvatski Dragovoljac miss Jurin whereas Slaven Koprivnica miss Rogulj.

Verdict: Slaven Koprivnica to win at 6/4.

FC Copenhagen vs Randers – under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Randers have long been defensive experts and that’s not changed this season. Their form has suffered due to a lack of attacking threat although the mid-season signings that Randers have made have improved their attack an awful lot. However, their strength is still predominantly in defence and that should be evident today too against a disjointed Copenhagen side. Copenhagen have all but won the Superligaen already and with the news that they’re to have a new manager at the end of the season, it’s hard to see them reacting well today. They were lifeless against Esbjerg and although the late equaliser for the hosts ruined many accumulators, I think it was merited based upon Esbjerg working harder and creating more chances than Copenhagen. Copenhagen’s problem is that when they’re not motivated, they tend to become very lazy and make little effort to score goals. They’re secure defensively but without scoring goals they become a bit irrelevant in their games and thus the idea of under 2.5 goals here is born. Randers are an under 2.5 goals side against most Superligaen teams when the opportunity is there and with the above in mind, I think taking under 2.5 goals is the way forward here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Maag Tammeka Tartu vs Levadia Tallinn – under 2.5 goals at 21/20.

What can I say but two low-scoring sides here? Tammeka have been a bit poor away from home but they’ve been tenacious and well-organised at home, avoiding defeat in all three home games thus far. Levadia aren’t what they were, as we all know – they had a clear-out and sold the vast majority of their good players and thus are struggling not only to create chances but to score them too. They’ve only just arrived back from a Baltic League game in Lithuania against Siauliai so they won’t be 100% here. For me, although Levadia could edge this one, the value is in under 2.5 goals.

Team news – Levadia Tallinn miss Novikov.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 21/20.

VVV Venlo vs NEC Nijmegen – away win at 7/5.

NEC may have a dismal away record but 7/5 to win at one of the worst sides in the Eredivisie? I think it has to be worth a shot. They’ve got Belgian star striker Vleminckx back in town and with Danish playmaker Zimling behind him, NEC are absolutely a force in attack. They’re not a superb side but they’ve got more firepower and ability than their hosts do, in my view. VVV have improved lately, especially at home as the times become harder but they’re still short on ability and that can show in this game, especially with important defender Timisela absent for VVV. For me, there’s some value in the away win at 7/5 although there’s obviously a risk here!

Team news – VVV Venlo miss Ofrany, Timisela, and Van Kouwen whereas NEC Nijmegen miss Wellenberg.

Verdict: NEC Nijmegen to win at 7/5.

Universitatea Cluj vs Gaz Metan Medias – both sides to score at evens.

I’m surprised that this one is priced as generously as evens, to be honest. Cluj have looked really weak in defence lately and although they’re outscoring opponents and still winning games, their leaky defence has to be a cause for concern. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in all their Liga home games this season and that was against Astra Ploiesti earlier this season. Recently, Cluj have conceded at home against relegation-threatened Unirea Urziceni and a fairly low-scoring Brasov side so you can see how easily the newly-promoted side’s defence can be breached. They play well as a unit at home so I’d not touch the 1×2 market here but the visitors can cause problems here. Gaz Metan aren’t a potent side themselves but in Brazilian midfielder Eric de Oliveira, they have one of the best midfielders in Romania with Eric scoring and creating the vast majority of Gaz Metan’s goals. They’ve only failed to score in three away games this season – Pandurii Targu Jiu, Targu Mures, and Brasov respectively – and all three were in the earlier stages of the season. Gaz Metan have scored at both Poli Timisoara and Rapid Bucharest in their last two away games so I’m sure they can score against defensively inept Cluj today. Like I said earlier, the 1×2 market holds no value here, in my view, but taking both sides to score at evens looks to have a good level of value today.

Team news – Universitatea Cluj miss Szilagyi, Popa, Pacurar, and Delgado whereas Gaz Metan Medias miss Todea, Lazar, and Litu.

Verdict: Both sides to score at evens.

Dinamo Moscow vs Kuban’ Krasnodar – away win with draw no bet at 3/1.

This is by far the riskiest bet of the day thus far, especially when you consider that you can lay Dinamo Moscow for 6/5! However, bear with me here – there is method to the madness!

Dinamo Moscow are notoriously slow starters to the Russian Premier League and despite their hefty financial backing, they simply don’t play as a unit. Dinamo Moscow are the prime example of what buying talented individuals does – it makes a team of talented individuals without them play as a unit. Talented individuals are nothing without the right manager to galvanise them and Dinamo Moscow rarely have that combination working correctly and that’s shown so far this season a 3-0 defeat a newly-promoted Volga Nizhnyi Novgorod in their last match. In Kuranyi, Misimovic, and Samedov they have some very good attacking players. However, their defence is susceptible because of a lack of unity and thus I cannot understand odds of 8/13 on the home win today. Visitors Kuban’ Krasnodar are newbies to the Russian Premier League but under wily Dan Petrescu, they look a lot more experienced than they should. As ever, the talented Romanian boss is making his team very much a unit, just as he did with Unirea Urziceni in Romania to get them into Europe, and Kuban’ look all the more dangerous for it. True, they lack the names that Dinamo Moscow possess and even the financial backing that their hosts have. However, they have such a strong team spirit and great organisation and this is the kind of team that Dinamo Moscow generally hate to play against. Kuban’ have already beaten Spartak Moscow 3-1 this season and only a somewhat fortuitous 0-2 win for Rubin Kazan’ has seen Kuban’ lose at all this season so I think we’re in for a much more entertaining game than the odds suggest today. For me, this very welll-disciplined and dangerous Kuban’ side is well worth taking with draw no bet cover at 3/1 against an overrated and inconsistent Dinamo Moscow side today.

Verdict: Kuban’ Krasnodar to win with draw no bet at 3/1.

Rayo Vallecano de Madrid vs Albacete – home win to nil at evens.

Why take Rayo Vallecano to win this game at 2/5 when you can back them to win without conceding here? It makes far more sense to take them to win to nil here, realistically speaking. I appreciate that football doesn’t always work out the way that it should but the side with the best defensive home record in the division hosting the side with the worst goalscoring away record in the division spells no away goals to me! Vallecano average scoring over two goals per home game in addition to their terrific defensive record so it’s no surprise that they’ve won eleven out of fifteen home games in the Segunda Liga this season. Visitors Albacete aren’t as bad a side as the table portrays them to be; they’re actually quite competent defensively. However, they simply don’t score goals away from home and that problem has led them into losing eleven out of sixteen away games already this season. The only side Albacete have scored against away from home since the start of 2011 is fellow relegation battlers Ponferradina, which isn’t particularly impressive! Vallecano kept a clean sheet at home against promotion rivals Real Betis last match so they can certainly keep one here too.

Vallecano miss regular midfielder Juli here but I’d be more concerned for the visitors as they miss important defender Toni and regular midfielder De Lemma. Either way, this bet has too much value in it to overlook so my call is for the hosts to win this game without conceding at surprisingly generous odds of evens.

Team news – Rayo Vallecano de Madrid miss Juli whilst having doubts over Salva, Michel, and Tito whereas Albacete miss Toni and De Lemma.

Verdict: Rayo Vallecano de Madrid to win to nil at evens.
