Vitebsk vs BATE Borisov

Free

There’s so much value today that I feel I could very well explode both with exasperation and exhaustion! There’s a massive list of it today, which naturally makes me wary but there looks to be a lot of money to be made today regardless so pick whatever you fancy!

My personal favourite today is the Vysshaya Liga encounter betwen Vitebsk and BATE Borisov, although this game had stiff competition from the Veikkausliiga game between VPS Vaasa and HJK Helsinki and also from the Challenge League game between Gossau and Servette. Vitebsk and BATE Borisov are the only two sides that are currently unbeaten in this division but I suspect that at least one of those records will come to an end today!

Vitebsk have played six games thus far, winning just twice and drawing four times. They make a living from being hard to beat, which is why they draw so many games instead of winning the majority of them. Vitebsk are currently punching above their weight, however, riding their burst of early season momentum although I think they’re going to develop a puncture for this game today. You have to remember that Vitebsk barely managed to stay in this division last season so they’re certainly not the wall of a side that they make themselves out to be. Vitebsk have become less solid in the last few games than they were at the start of the season as they’ve now conceded in each of their last three games, each game resulting in a 1-1 draw. Vitebsk don’t score many goals so it only takes a superior side to dominate the goals side of things for Vitebsk to get a loud and rude awakening. Vitebsk have played some good sides already this season and gained some credible results but I think this game with the undisputed best in Belarus will be too much for them today.

BATE’s early season problems with goalscoring appear to have vanished now which leaves them looking immortal yet again. An extremely impressive 2-0 win at Naftan Novopolotsk followed by a 6-0 drubbing of a vanquished Partizan Minsk gives BATE Borisov all the potency that they need to beat anyone in this country. I mean, come on – BATE have played six Vysshaya Liga games this year and haven’t conceded a single goal in any of them, despite already having taken that tough trip to Novopolotsk! What they formerly lacked in attack was compensated by an iron defence but now the attack is on a par with their defence, they do like a frightening side. BATE have already won two out of their three away games this season and have won their last three Vysshaya Liga visits here consecutively so why they won’t do so again today is beyond me.

I don’t understand why the bookies place BATE Borisov at such long odds against a poor but over-achieving side! Are they only looking at this season’s statistics? Anyone who knows anything about football in this country knows that Vitebsk haven’t beaten BATE Borisov anywhere since 1998! They’ve met nineteen times since then with BATE Borisov winning fifteen of those encounters. Basically, it’s going to take a monumental suicide job from BATE Borisov for them to not win this game. I cannot see a fairly impotent Vitebsk breaking the sturdy BATE Borisov ranks but I can see the reigning champions sweeping away the hosts at very generous odds indeed – BATE should be at least 8/13 here!

Verdict: BATE Borisov to win at 4/5.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Bulgarian A PFG – beware!

You all know by now how corrupt this division is when it doesn’t matter so take extra care with this league today. I hear rumours that Beroe are playing a second string because their game is a fixed X2 outcome, that Slavia Sofia are going to lose to Chernomorets Burgas, and that Lokomotiv Plovdiv will not lose at home to Litex Lovech. Try your hand on these games if you can still find odds on them and if you feel like it but keep all punts low!

Naftan Novopolotsk vs Torpedo Zhodino – home win at 17/20.

Despite a comfortable win for BATE Borisov in Naftan’s last home game, they remain a strong home side. As I’ve mentioned previously, BATE are only side in this division capable of producing a display in Novopolotsk like that which won them the game 2-0 because they’re the best side in the division, simply. Naftan are amongst the chasing pack along with the likes of Dinamo Minsk, Dinamo Brest, and even Shakhtyor Soligorsk when they want to be there! Naftan are there because they’re truly a dominant home side which has already been shown this season despite their defeat against BATE. They’d previously scored six goals and conceded no goals in two hom games and it’s that kind of form that makes them dangerous. They don’t travel too well but there aren’t many better home sides here than Naftan. It’ll be interesting to see how the defeat against BATE will have affected them as their first game after that defeat resulted in a rather impressive draw at Dinamo Brest. They also have a good record against Torpedo Zhodino with four out of their last five meetings in the Vysshaya Liga against today’s visitors resulting in a Naftan win and Naftan have won their last two home games in the Vysshaya Liga against Torpedo Zhodino too. In fact, Torpedo have only scored once against Naftan during those five games – just some food for thought!

Torpedo enjoy being a real pain in the backside in this division, which is a concern for me because they love nothing better than to get a result when they’re not supposed to! However, I’m going against them today because their form so far this season can only be described as “terrible”. They’ve lost four out of their six Vysshaya Liga games and have won just once along the way. During that run, they’ve lost at home to newly-promoted Belshina and have conceded in all but one game, totalling nine goals, which is the biggest number of goals conceded in the division barring kamikaze Partizan Minsk. Zhodino will have problems dealing with Naftan today for obvious reasons but coming here with a shambolic defence is a recipe for suicide.

The bookies don’t appear to have latched on to how good Naftan are at home, happily. If they had then they’d be pricing this game at odds of at least 1/2 as they love to do in Eastern European leagues. Therefore, despite Naftan having not won their last home game, the odds are definitely worth taking today as I feel the bookies have underestimated the strength of today’s hosts and the weakness of their opponents!

Verdict: Naftan Novopolotsk to win at 17/20.

Oostende vs Lierse SK – away win at 11/10.

Approach with caution here but I can’t ignore odds of 11/10 for Lierse to win a Tweede Klasse game. They’re the biggest and best side in this division by a long way. Only Mons have won more times on the road than Lierse have and the usually short odds that are given for the now-champions are usually quite fair. However, because this game is redundant, the bookies have been lenient, which both amuses and interests me because Lierse are twice the side that Oostende are irrespective of their placing. Oostende have had a great campaign but it’s a real one-off, in my opinion – they’re not that good a side! Lierse are that good a side as nine wins in seventeen away games indicates, particularly with just one defeat on the road all season long! They average scoring approximately 1.5 goals per away game and I don’t see them letting up just because the season is over – momentum doesn’t just die so quickly. Oostende have nothing to play for too, let’s remember here, but the difference is that they lost their last game heavily at Mons and have also lost their last home game against Antwerp so they’re not even playing particularly well at the moment. Irrespective of whether this game is or isn’t redundant, I’d be taking Lierse to win it – I’m just surprised to see the bookies being so generous with the odds, which are certainly worth taking whilst they remain above evens.

Verdict: Lierse SK to win at 11/10.

Deportivo Cali vs Envigado – home win at evens.

Ever since winning the Cali derby at America, Deportivo Cali have gone on a three game run of consecutive wins in the Primera A, which has boosted their morale drastically. The momentum that they currently possess even guided them to victory at Real Cartagena in their last away game without conceding a single goal. Whereas I don’t believe Deportivo Cali are anywhere near the side that they used to be, they remain a decent side and their home record is one to be concerned about as an opposing side with the hosts having won four out of their seven home games this season, losing just once along the way. Deportivo average scoring nearly two goals per home game and their overall tally of sixteen goals scored at home is bettered only by Once Caldas Manizales’ seventeen goals at home. Deportivo are playing well at the moment and playing incisively, more importantly, so I think they’re good value for the win tonight.

Envigado are a side that don’t tend to bother turning up on the road other than to stick their team bus in front of goal and hope for the best. They’re one of just four Primera A sides that are yet to win an away game in this campaign but four draws in seven games says that they can be hard to break down. It’s a shame that Envigado adopt these tactics on the road when you see how good their home form is i.e. how capable they are. However, I’m going against this troublesome side due to their recent form as three defeats in four Primera A games is bound to take its toll on their morale. They’ve lost their last two away games in the Primera A and are leaking too many goals at the moment so it’s hard to envision Envigado keeping out their potent hosts tonight.

The last three of these encounters played in Cali have gone over 2.5 goals so expect a few goals tonight. Deportivo are in-form and are scoring for fun so should have too much for Envigado tonight. I’m not sure why the bookies haven’t tipped the scale more in Deportivo’s favour tonight but either way the home win is definitely worth a flutter whilst the odds remain above evens.

Verdict: Deportivo Cali to win at evens.

Atletico Junior Barranquilla vs Cortulua – home win at 4/9.

4/9 isn’t good odds, generally speaking, but the sole point of this brief preview is to point out that it is good value when you consider that Atletico are two, perhaps even three times as good as Cortulua are. Atletico have already won six out of their seven home games this season in their atypically dominant fashion and this will undoubtedly be another home win. Newly-promoted Cortulua aren’t good enough to be on the same pitch as Atletico so why the odds aren’t at least 1/3 is beyond me. If this game was in England then you’d be looking at 1/4 for this call so this is a bargain in its own right!

Verdict: Atletico Junior Barranquilla to win at 4/9.

Omonia Nicosia vs APOEL Nicosia – home win at 11/10.

Games between these two rarely tend to result in a home win although it’s worth noting that Omonia have won the last two Nicosia derbies both away from home. The reason I’m backing them today, however, is simple; they’re champions if they win. They’re five points clear of trailing Anorthosis Famagusta with two games to go. However, Omonia’s final game is away to Anorthosis Famagusta so they really don’t want to be depending upon their fortune in that game to decide whether they’re champions or not, particularly as that’s almost certainly what will happen from Anorthosis’ point at least as their away game with Apollon Limassol has been pulled by the bookies, reputedly because it’s already a fixed away win. Therefore, Omonia really need this one today. APOEL would love to stop them, no doubt, but I think Omonia have been more impressive this year and indeed in recent times so I’d say backing them today has some value whilst the odds remain as they are – Omonia won’t leave anything to chance here!

Verdict: Omonia Nicosia to win at 11/10.

Slavia Prague vs Marila Pribram – lay Slavia Prague at 11/10.

There’s only one reason I’m laying the hosts today and that’s motivation. Slavia Prague have been condemned to their first season without European football next year after an early exit from the Ondrasovka Cup last match against Jablonec. It’s the first time in over ten years that Slavia have evaded playing in European football and frankly they’ll be devastated. They’ve had a horrific campaign and will be extremely glad to see the back of it but ultimately I can’t see the hosts having the motivation or momentum to take a win from this game. Their name commands a respect but I think the bookies have given them too much respect with their short odds because they’re not playing well and have nothing to play for. Pribram are an average side but they specialise in keeping being hard to beat although usually via scoring more goals than their opponents. They don’t travel well but they don’t need to be to take at least a point off a demoralised Slavia Prague side that have already won less than half of their home games this season.

Interestingly enough, Slavia Prague find it very hard to score against Pribram, generally. They’ve only scored more than once in a game against Pribram once in their last six meetings at either ground. Obviously I’m banking on a dejected display from the hosts and a tenacious one from the visitors but ultimately two sides with nothing to play for and no consistency to speak of should grind out a pointless draw, particularly with neither having great morale. Either way, the odds for laying Slavia are good considering how poorly they’re playing so I think it’s worth a low punt today.

Verdict: Lay Slavia Prague at 11/10.

Banik Ostrava vs Sparta Prague – home win at 7/5.

This is arguably my boldest call of the day. With four games remaining in the Gambrinus Liga, it’s these two sides that are joint top on sixty-four points apiece. Sparta Prague are top because their goal difference is four better than Banik Ostrava but over four games that can obviously change a lot so Sparta Prague know that they could really do with winning this one today, particularly given the outstanding form of Banik of late. In my humble opinion, Sparta haven’t played well enough to win the title this year but Banik really have so I’d love it if it was a home win and why not indeed? Banik have already won ten out of thirteen home games this season, which is more than any other side, and average scoring nearly two goals per home game too. I’m running out of superlatives for the hosts so you can make up your own as you appreciate that they’ve won six consecutive games, keeping clean sheets in four of those games. Indeed, even when Banik have struggled lately and had to come from behind they’ve still done it with great tenacity and composure so I have to back them to win this one today as I think they’re marginally better than Sparta currently.

Either way, this should be a superb game. I do believe that the winner of this game will win the title this season because of the run-ins that remain for both sides should really result in at least seven points for both sides. I don’t see Jablonec featuring in this title race barring a miracle so it’s really down to these two. Sparta are unbeaten on the road this season but Banik are currently looking like the only side who could possibly break that record, particularly having not lost at home to Sparta for three consecutive seasons, winning the last encounter on this ground. For me, the value is on the home win but this should be a great game for the neutral either way!

Verdict: Banik Ostrava to win at 7/5.

Roskilde vs Frem – home win at 5/6.

There’s little between these two sides with both of them battling against relegation. However, Roskilde are the only one of these two sides that are showing real fight to avoid the drop, in my opinion, and I think they’ve already 75% of the way there in terms of beating the drop. Spirited displays of late from Roskilde have led to no defeats in three home games since returning from the winter break, even beating Kolding 2-0 in their last home game whilst keeping out superior opponents (Vejle and Viborg) in their other two home games, drawing those encounters. Even on the road Roskilde have put in spirited displays, drawing 2-2 at Vestjaelland and even inflicting league leaders AC Horsens’ second home defeat of the season so it’s wise not to underestime today’s hosts, particulary playing in such a driven manner. Frem are one of the sides that I expect to go down because they’ve not played well this season and they’re not showing a great deal of fight to get away from the drop zone either. They’ve already lost eight out of eleven away games this season because they average scoring nearly three goals per away game, which is the worst away record in the division. They’ve failed to find the net in their last three games consecutively and have lost four out of their last five games so momentum, morale, and hope are beginning to run dry for Frem. They’ve lost all of their away games since returning from the winter break and really should lose their fourth in a row today. Either way, Roskilde shouldn’t be at 4/5 for this game – they should be at least 4/6 so there should be value on the home win today.

Verdict: Roskilde to win at 5/6.

Thisted vs Lyngby – away win at evens.

There’s not a lot of statistics to support this one so do approach with caution. However, Lyngby are too big for this division – they need to be in the Superligaen next year so they have to improve their away form. Their home form really cannot be improved but their away form drastically needs improving and this is the kind of game that they’re more than capable of winning. Lyngby are twice as good as newly-promoted Thisted and this is the opportune moment to prove it with Lyngby needing three points. Thisted have nothing left to play for with promotion and relegation realistically too far away to concern them. Thisted tend to do well in stopping other sides winning here but that’s largely due to keeping sides out in terms of goalscoring, something I doubt they can do against a potent Lyngby side. The visitors are weak in defence but Thisted are weak in attack so whilst Lyngby are at evens for this game, they have to be worth a sneaky punt today!

Verdict: Lyngby to win at evens.

Liverpool vs Chelsea – lay Chelsea at 10/11.

Bias? No!

Look, I simply cannot accept that Chelsea can be 5/6 to win this game – it’s farcical. The majority of Liverpool fans want their side to lose so Manchester United don’t win the title, which is pretty pathetic really – everyone loves rivalry but that’s just ridiculous. However, Liverpool players and Rafa Benitez sure as hell don’t want that whilst they realistically have a chance of taking a Champions League place. Liverpool have only lost twice at home in the Premier League this season and haven’t lost at home to Chelsea in the Premier League since 2005 so why the bookies are so confident on the away win is beyond me – Liverpool need the points here too! All that I will say against Liverpool is that playing 120 minutes mid-week will have tired them and the loss of Torres is a big blow but I still rate them as a compact side that sides will always find hard to beat. Don’t expect Liverpool to lie down and lose here – this isn’t the Bulgarian A PFG!

Visitors Chelsea are doing well with grinding out their results at the moment. An emphatic 7-0 win against Stoke didn’t flatter them as they dominated their uninterested opponents and they’ll take a lot of momentum from that result. We all know how good Chelsea can be but my concern lies in that their football isn’t particularly good at the moment; they’re riding their luck, basically. That’s not a dig; every side that wins anything has to have luck. However, Chelsea are riding it an awful lot at the moment so I’m not convinced that they’ll do the job today. If they do then it’s the likes of Malouda who has taken them there with inspired form. However, Chelsea have no holding midfielder for this game and that will hurt them, particularly with the likes of Gerrard surging through the middle so I really don’t think this game will be all one-way traffic.

Maybe it’s optimisic or maybe I’m placing too much hope on Liverpool putting in a professional display but I just don’t see Chelsea winning this one today. Liverpool don’t concede many at home and I just can’t see them losing this game as a result, despite what their fans may want. Either way, the odds on Chelsea are way too short so laying them today looks to be the best value if you try your luck on this one today.

Verdict: Lay Chelsea at 10/11.

Sunderland vs Manchester United – lay Manchester United at 21/10.

I know, I know – I’ve put on the main listing that United will win this one. The reason I’m recommending this outcome is because it’s the only value available in this game, in my opinion. United always struggle up at Sunderland due to their in-your-face football style and that won’t change with the in-form Darren Bent on-fire with a shitload of goals scored. They’re a well-organised side and manager Steve Bruce knows how to motivate his sides for the big occasions. Sunderland have only lost twice at home this season so don’t underestimate them here – I’m certainly not, much as though I’d love the away win! United at 2/5 for this game is laughable – Sunderland are a damn good home side and I wouldn’t be seen dead backing United at anything above 8/13 for this game today. United travelled to Blackburn a couple of weeks ago who were strong at home and sure enough Blackburn got the draw because United couldn’t break them down. I expect another similar display today and although there are rumours of Rooney being fit for this game (which is pivotal to this selection being good value or not) I doubt he’ll be available. United can win this game but I’m just not seeing where the goals will come from so laying United at 21/10 looks the best approach for this game today if you’re looking for value.

Despite the above tip, however…COME ON UNITED!! Now that is bias!

Verdict: Lay Manchester United at 21/10.

Queens Park Rangers vs Newcastle United – away win at 5/4.

The bookies keep underestimating Newcastle United and I don’t quite know why. Admittedly, this game is redundant but with all the outcry in England of late with sides not fielding full-strength squads I cannot see anything but yet another committed Newcastle display. Only a very late equaliser from Ipswich drew them level and robbed Newcastle of three points last match but the fact remains that Newcastle have been superb whether they’ve had to win or not and it’d be a braver man than me that goes against them whilst they’re in this division as they’re the best side in it by some distance. QPR won’t want to lose at home in their last game of the season and Neil Warnock certainly won’t want that but QPR will be frankly happy to see the back of a disappointing season so I can’t see them being too concerned with winning this game. They’ve got some good momentum ahead of this game but they’re simply not as good as a driven and efficient machine like Newcastle so odds of 5/4 on the away win are far too generous in my books – the away win is certianly worth a punt at those odds!

Verdict: Newcastle United to win at 5/4.

VPS Vaasa vs HJK Helsinki – away win at 5/6.

Now these odds I like! By all rights, HJK should never be above 1/2 when playing a poor side like VPS Vaasa but fortune is with us today as HJK’s draw last match has no doubt influenced the bookies for this game. Fortunately, if that is the case, then they can’t possibly have seen the game that HJK played against Haka as they absolutely dominated their opponents and only some kind of miracle prevented HJK from winning that game. I don’t expect that luck to be on VPS’ side today, however! VPS had a largely unbelievable start to their campaign by winning 3-0 on the opening day of the Veikkausliiga but followed it up with a much more realistic home defeat against fellow relegation battlers JJK Jyvasklya without even scoring. VPS are a very poor side indeed and will be battling relegation this season based upon the lack of quality in their squad and I expect that to show today. HJK have dominated both of the games that they’ve played this season and I fully expect them to do so again today and prove just why they’re the reigning champions as a result.

If you require any further proof of HJK’s superiority over VPS today, consider that HJK have won both of their last two trips here, they’ve won their last five meetings with VPS at either ground, and are unbeaten against VPS in six games in all competitions so 5/6 is something of a gift for the away win today – odds really should be at 1/2 here!

Verdict: HJK Helsinki to win at 5/6.

Rot-Weiss Ahlen vs FSV Frankfurt – away win at 10/11.

There aren’t many leagues I dislike more than Bundesliga 2 when it comes to betting because most of the sides are able to match each other. However, this one looks safe enough to venture onto as Rot-Weiss Ahlen are already relegated, thus having nothing to play for, and their performances show it too. Ahlen clearly have no sense of pride as they continue to be embarrassed by every side that they face – they’ve not even scored in their last four games – so why Ahlen would change this winning formula style right now is beyond me! They’ve no motivation, no momentum, and no potency – I’d expect them to lose against me at the moment, particularly as they’ve lost seven consecutive games now. FSV Frankfurt are a poor side too but they need to win to stave off the threat of relegation and they bring momentum into this game with four wins, one draw, and just two defeats in their past seven games. They’ve won at relegation rivals Hansa Rostock in their last away game game and are scoring goals for fun at the moment so I feel there’s value in backing the visitors to win this one – the hosts look likely to lose against anyone and the visitors need the points so there should be value in the away win as Frankfurt should really be priced a shorter odds for this one.

Verdict: FSV Frankfurt to win at 10/11.

Atalanta Bergamo vs Bologna – home win at 4/5.

Atalanta are five points behind Bologna in the table and it’s that gulf that separates the relegation battlers and those free from it. With only nine points remaining for Atalanta to obtain, they know they have to win this game today. They’ve handled the pressure of winning when they’ve needed to at home in the latter stages of this season by winning their last four home games consecutively and Atalanta have been scoring a lot of goals lately with thirteen goals in seven games, scoring in each of their seven games. Atalanta are battling well and to be fair they should be – they’re used to staving off the threat of relegation – or at least attempting to. They’re strong at home anyway but results of late give them good momentum ahead of this game. Atalanta simply cannot afford to do anything but win this game so I expect a full-blooded display from them and they’ve got enough potency to secure the win today.

Bologna won’t want to lose this game but they can afford to do so, which is useful because they’re awful away from home. They’ve already lost nine out of seventeen on the road this season because they rarely score on the road. They’ve lost three out of their last four away games and the only one of those games they didn’t lose was a “fixed” game at Udinese in which the scoreline was 1-1. Bologna are not a particularly good side and clearly fear games like this hence the need to pay their way away from the drop zone. Bologna aren’t as good as Atalanta, in my humble opinion, and I expect that to show today.

This should be one hell of a violent game between these two sides of nutcases. If I remember rightly, games between these two sides tend to end with few men on the field and there have been few more important meetings between these two sides than this one. Atalanta will not stop running in this game due to their need of three points and I think it’s that extra motivation which will be enough to give them three points in Bergamo today although expect some nervy moments!

Verdict: Atalanta Bergamo to win at 4/5.

NAC Breda vs Twente Enschede – lay Twente Enschede at 6/4.

Twente at 4/9 for this game is insulting to NAC Breda. They’ve only lost three times at home this season and few sides have conceded less goals at home than they have. They may have rode their luck a little of late but the fact is that NAC Breda are unbeaten in five consecutive games and have only conceded once during that run so they’re no pushovers. NAC Breda need as many points as they can get from this game to further their own chances of obtaining a Europa League place next season so you’ll see a very committed display from the home side today. Twente are a good side and are extremely well-organised but they’ve not got great players – they simply work hard and have a very good manager in Steve McClaren. Twente do well on the road because they don’t concede many but the name of the game today is scoring goals and that’s something that isn’t done too often when NAC Breda are at home. Twente do need to win this in my opinion because I cannot see anything but an Ajax win in the other game and if Ajax win that game and Twente do anything but win then the league title goes to Amsterdam. It’s going to be total “squeaky bum time” and I just don’t think Twente have what it takes to win against a strong NAC Breda side today

Verdict: Lay Twente Enschede to win at 6/4.

Stabaek vs Haugesund – lay Stabaek at 7/5.

Newly-promoted Haugesund taking points off Stabaek? Why not? Everyone else is!

Stabaek are having real issues at the moment with goalscoring despite boasting arguably the most potent frontline in the Eliteserien with the old partnership of Nannskogg and Gunnarsson rekindled this season. However, Stabaek simply aren’t finding the net and as a result they’re struggling to obtain points, not only for the obvious reason of not being able to win games without scoring goals but also because they’re quite a poor side defensively and it’s shown horribly this year with a poor goalscoring ratio. They’ve only won once in their four home games this season and their last home game resulted in an unthinkable 1-0 defeat against newly-promoted Honefoss. Stabaek have lost their last two games consecutively and only the bottom three sides have scored less home goals than Stabaek this season so why they’re such heavy favourites for this game today is beyond me.

Haugesund are far from a great side but they’re resilient and well-organised, which is all Honefoss needed to take points from this trip a few games ago so this outcome certainly isn’t beyond the visitors. Haugesund have only lost two out of their four away games with impressive draws at Brann Bergen and Lillestrom respectively showing how strong Haugesund can be. Haugesund are unbeaten in three consecutive games, winning twice, so their momentum is strong currently, particularly with their last game resulting in a convincing 3-0 win at home to Kongsvinger. I can’t see anything but another gritty display from Haugesund and that should frankly be enough to obtain them at least a point against goal-shy Stabaek today at good odds.

Verdict: Lay Stabaek at 7/5.

Honefoss vs Molde – away win at 10/11.

Molde have stung us quite a lot lately so I’m wary of this selection. However, I’ll give them one last chance before abandoning them because the only reason they’re not winning games is that they’re being outscored. However, Honefoss do not score goals – they’ve managed it just three times this season – so I don’t see why Molde can’t win this one. Honefoss already average conceding 2.5 goals per game and have lost all three of their home games already this season so they’re not in great shape to avoid defeat against Molde today. Molde might not be able to defend for shit and they’re certainly not playing in their usually assured manner but Molde have notched up eleven goals in their last five games so they know how to find the net and they know they’re twice as good as Honefoss. Odds on the away win here should be 4/7 or 4/6 unless Molde field their Under 12 squad because they’re surely too good to do anything but win this game today, although those are some famous last words right there!

Verdict: Molde to win at 10/11.

Kongsvinger vs Viking Stavanger – away win at evens.

Kongsvinger aren’t good enough to stay in the Eliteserien this season; fact. They don’t score goals and they concede far too easily. That record is still applicable at home despite it being on a lessened scale in comparison to their away form with Kongsvinger having already lost two out of their three home games this season, drawing the other encounter. They’re without a win in their past three games and have lost their last two games consecutively, conceding a hefy seven goals along the way so things aren’t looking too rosy for Kongsvinger at the moment. An embarrassing 3-0 defeat at fellow newly-promoted side Haugesund will have plummeted their morale to new depths and they can’t afford for it to be that way against a much better side than they are – Viking Stavanger.

The visitors haven’t set the division alight with stunning displays just yet due to a lot of injuries but they’ve played well nonetheless and they’ve been efficient where required so I’ve been suitably impressed with them. They’ve looked particularly well-marshalled of late with two consecutive wins at Honefoss and at home to Stabaek respectively without even conceding a goal. They’ve gone about their business quietly but efficiently of late so I expect them to turn around their meager away form this season, particularly with some of their absentees returning from injury, hence their little burst of momentum.

Ultimately, Kongsvinger are demoralised and leaking goals and Viking are calm and composed, as well as scoring goals whilst not conceding goals so the away win at evens could and should have good value today.

Verdict: Viking Stavanger to win at evens.

Odd Grenland Skien vs Brann Bergen – home win at 5/6.

Odd Grenland’s artificial turf was the graveyard of many sides last season but the hosts have found success considerably harder to achieve at home this season with just one win in four home games. They’re having their weaknesses exploited much more than they’d have liked of late with an embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Valerenga Oslo highlighting that. What I will say in Odd Grenland’s favour, however, is not only does their home form not indicate how strong they are at home but they have also hosted Rosenborg, Molde, and Stabaek in three of their first four home games of the season so perhaps it makes understanding their home form a little easier. They remain a good side and a potent side and frankly they’re a lot better than Brann currently so I fancy them today at decent odds.

Brann have gained two credible results at home lately so bring some momentum into this game for a change so do approach this one with caution. However, Brann are so bad defensively that they’ve already conceded seventeen goals this season, which is an average of over two goals conceded per game, a record that only bottom club Honefoss can claim to “better”! Brann have lost all three of their away games this season and have conceded ten times along the way so it’s going to take more than their momentum burst to save their skins today against a wounded bull that is Odd Grenland.

Barring some magic from Brann’s only remaining good player Erik Huseklepp, I cannot see the visitors taking anything from what is a very difficult away game. Odd Grenland aren’t getting the results that they’d like to at the moment but they’re more than good enough to do so and the odds are good enough to back them at today in my opinion – Brann are more than capable of being embarrassed today just as they have been for two consecutive seasons whilst playing away against Odd Grenland!

Verdict: Odd Grenland Skien to win at 5/6.

Slask Wroclaw vs Lech Poznan – away win at 10/11.

Defeat for Wisla Krakow at home to Korona Kielce on friday night was unthinkable as it virtually hands this title to Lech on a place. Wisla’s next away game is against giants Legia which will be a game that they’d have to perform miracles in to take three points from so a win for Lech today and then beat Polonia Bytom (which they really should) then that puts them in the driving seat with two games remaining. This fact won’t have escaped their attention and Lech will have taken a massive morale boost as a result. Lech have won four out of their last six games, drawing the other two games, so they bring strong momentum into this game. The goal conceded against Lechia Gdansk last match was their first conceded in six games but a battling and calm display from Lech earned them three points in the end, and what a vital three points they’ve turned out to be!

Lech won here last season and beat Slask at home earlier this season, both games being played without Lech conceding a goal so the gap in quality is beginning to grow between these two sides. Slask are no pushovers but they’ve had a horrible campaign and have ended up battling against relegation rather than pushing for a European place. Slask have only lost three home games this season and I’d be more dubious about going against them if they had anything to play for but effectively the season is over for Slask so I can’t see a committed display from them. Indeed, Slask have shown little dedication in any of their games lately due to a lack of motivaiton with no wins since returning from the winter break, a run which stretches back nine games. Admittedly, they’ve only lost twice during that time but what a horrendous run that is – they’ve only scored five times during those nine games and only three of those goals have been at home. Slask have turned into a woeful side and if Lech take the lead in this game then that should be enough to see off their droll and disinterested hosts. Either way, the odds on the away win look generous enough to take the away win today.

Verdict: Lech Poznan to win at 10/11.

Saturn Moscow Oblast vs Zenit St.Petersburg – away win at 5/6.

Saturn Moscow Oblast haven’t won any of their seven games so far this season, hence their deserved place in the relegation zone currently. They’ve drawn four out of those seven games so it’s not all doom and gloom for the hosts but the fact is that they’re not playing well enough currently. They’ve drawn all three home games played so they are proving a tough nut to crack at home but it’s only a matter of time before that changes as that run is entirely down to a lack of goals being scored by the visitors as the hosts have only scored one goal at home all season long – the worst goalscoring record in the division at home.

Unfortunatly for Saturn, they’re hosting a very much driven Zenit St.Petersburg side who enter this game after an impressive win at CSKA Moscow last match, winning without even conceding a goal. Zenit are playing some very good football so it’s a worrying point for all of their title rivals that Zenit are now beginning to match goals scored to their impressive displays so they’re looking the real deal at the moment. They’ve won three out of their last five games and are one of just three Premier League sides yet to lose a game this season. They’ve already won three out of four away games without scoring many goals but one goal tends to be enough for an iron Zenit defence and I suspect that’d be the case today against a goal-shy Saturn side too.

This has got “under 2.5 goals” written all over this game but Zenit really should be able to win this game. They’ve dominated the vast majority of their games with some impressive football and bring good momentum into this game as a result of some good results so I expect Zenit to further their form by grinding out a narrow away win at generous odds.

Verdict: Zenit St.Petersburg to win at 5/6.

Sevilla CF vs Atletico Madrid – lay Sevilla CF at 21/10.

If I only succeed in putting you off betting on this game with this selection then I’ll consider this job done. Sevilla CF should only be 4/11 to beat Atletico Madrid of all of Atletico’s players died, I assure you. There really isn’t that much between these two sides. Whereas I will concede that Atletico are unlikely to win this one due to poor away form this season, a leaky defence, and a tired squad following 120 minutes of football mid-week against Liverpool in the Europa League, what I would say is that Sevilla CF aren’t that good themselves. 4/11 on a side that has drawn at home to Xerez and Athletic Bilbao in their last six home games? In fact, 4/11 for a Sevilla side to win at home when they’ve won just two out of their last six home games against two poor away sides? Ridiculous. Sevilla aren’t playing well enough to merit those odds so don’t touch this game with a bargepole! If Sevilla were closer to evens then I’d be interested but frankly I’m not as Atletico are more than capable of sneaking a draw here – they’re not in two finals for no reason, guys!

Verdict: Lay Sevilla CF at 21/10.

Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Real Mallorca – home win at 21/20.

This is Bilbao’s last shot at entering the race for a Champions League place. Back-to-back goalless draws at home to Real Zaragoza and away to Osasuna have harmed their chances but they’ve got one last shout. They’re at their trusty San Mamés so they already have an extra man in their favour for this game. Athletic have already won ten out of sixteen games at home this season and average scoring nearly two goals per game so they’re a strong home side. I can’t see Athletic going three games without scoring so I do expect them to score today. They’ve got virtually a full squad to choose from and this is the last throw of the dice for them so I expect them to turn up tonight.

Mallorca don’t travel well, bluntly. To be fourth in the table and yet have only won twice on the road in seventeen attempts simply isn’t good enough and shows that the gap is narrowing quality-wise at the top of the Spanish hierachy. Mallorca average conceding approximately 1.5 goals per away game and aren’t playing particularly well at the present time so it’s hard for me to consider them a threat today. However, you have to expect former Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz to get a token goal against his former club today so I expect a few goals in this game at least as I do think Bilbao will win the encounter. Mallorca have lost two out of their last three visits against Bilbao and could do with avoiding defeat today to further their own push for a Champions League place but they’ll have to put in a tremendous display to do so against a solid Bilbao side.

This game should be quite a close one as Bilbao aren’t scoring or conceding many and Mallorca don’t score many on the road. However, Bilbao will be motivated by their superb fans and have more than enough in their favour to shatter the Mallorca defence so this bet has to be worth a shot whilst the odds remain above evens whilst taking singles on both Llorente and Aduriz to score in this game is also worth your consideration.

Verdict: Athletic Club de Bilbao to win at 21/20.

FC Zurich vs Young Boys Bern – away win at evens.

FC Zurich will be glad to see the back of this campaign as their season has faded into mediocrity due to an excessive focus on their Champions League campaign. They’ve not motivation to play this game other than the motivation that always exists in games between big sides in the same league. Zurich are no pushovers at home, having only lost four times in sixteen home games this season. However, they’ve lost three out of their last four games, including an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Luzern last match, so they’re really not playing well and have no motivation to change that fact. They’ve lost their last two home games consecutively, once against rivals Basel and once against already relegated Aarau, showing the lack of committment from FC Zurich currently and also their leaky defence with those two defeats doubling the number of games that FC Zurich have lost at home this season. FC Zurich lost their last home game with Young Boys Bern and have lost twice away against them since then so the gap between themselves and Young Boys Bern is beginning to increase significantly.

Young Boys Bern are three points clear of Basel in the race for the Super League title and have four games remaining to secure it, starting here. They’ve already won nine out of sixteen away games this season so they’re more than capable of doing so. If they do win the title then it’s due in no small part to CSKA Moscow-bound Seydou Doumbia, the Ivorian striker that has notched up a massive twenty-nine goals in twentyeight games and he’ll have done his chances of making the Ivory Coast World Cup Squad no harm whatsoever as a result. Young Boys Bern will need him today as the last thing that the reigning champions want is to host Basel on the last game of the season needing three points to win the title so the sooner the better for today’s visitors. Young Boys Bern have never had a sturdy defence, which does concern me, but they’re so strong in attack that it doesn’t tend to matter.

Ultimately, this should be a close game between two giants of Swiss football but you have to favour the highly-motivated visitors against their demoralised and uninterested hosts today. FC Zurich have played that badly this season that they even lost 2-1 at Young Boys Bern despite playing against ten men for ninety minutes and having the lead for the vast majority of that time. Zurich just don’t have what it takes currently so I expect them to narrowly lose this one today at good odds.

Verdict: Young Boys Bern to win at evens.

Gossau vs Servette – away win at 5/6.

I think the bookies have fucked this one up today, to be honest. Servette are a massive club and they belong in the Super League, not the Challenge League. They had a nightmare start to their campaign but they’ve been so good since the winter break that they’ve very nearly had a shot at promotion. Unfortunately, it is a bridge too far for them to be promoted now but their momentum is still strong from an outstanding run which has seen them win seven out of their last eight games, even beating promotion favourites Thun along the way. Their motivation may have stuttered slightly ahead of this game but they still come into it on the back of a great run so I expect a strong display from them today. Aside from that, hosts Gossau are already relegated and have been for some time, if only mentally and not mathematically. They’ve already lost seven home games this season and have lost four out of their last five games so they’re already playing like a doomed side and should offer little resistance to in-form Servette today.

Verdict: Servette to win at 5/6.
