Zorya Lugansk vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Free

Yesterday was so unfortunate, wasn’t it? On one hand we have Viktoria Plzen destroying Bohemians 1905 without scoring and on the other we have RBC Roosendaal conceding a late goal for the under 2.5 goals to be blown apart! Still, onwards and upwards, eh?

Today’s featured game is the Ukrainian Premier League encounter between Zorya Lugansk and Shakhtar Donetsk. Zorya Lugansk are generally a tough nut to crack at home and you could be forgiven for thinking that this game wouldn’t be a walkover despite Shakhtar being by far the better of the two sides.

However, that isn’t the end of the equation, unfortunately. You see, Zorya Lugansk are actually a feeder club of Shakhtar Donetsk and with that in mind, it suddenly doesn’t look so coincidental that Zorya have lost all twelve encounters with Shakhtar Donetsk since Zorya were promoted. Zorya aren’t a great side, don’t get me wrong, but this side doesn’t lose as consistently as that – there should be at least one “fluke” result in there and the fact that there isn’t speaks volumes. Zorya have lost their last two home games against Shakhtar Donetsk by conceding in the first-half and then allowing the deficit to increase in the second-half, hence my selection today. Let’s also not forget that Zorya have got no less than ten players on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk that are ineligible to play in this game for that reason. Those players are Polanskyi, Kovalyov, Mykytsey, Kasyan, Chakovskyi, Shevchuk, Fomin, Yemelyanov, Shust, and Kartushov. Four of those are important defenders, three are important strikers, one is an important holding midfielder, one is an every-other-game goalkeeper, and the other is an every-other-game midfielder. Whether Zorya lose this game because of their relationship with Shakhtar or because of their continual absentees each time they face Shakhtar, the fact remains that Zorya do tend to lose this game and I’d be surprised to see that change today.

I could tell you about statistics for both of these two sides and point out why Shakhtar Donetsk are the better of these two sides but it’s fairly pointless to do so. The hosts are missing ten important players and the visitors are already by far the superior side. The odds on the outright away win are about right but I don’t see much point in backing a side at such odds other than as accumulator fodder. My call is for Shakhtar to lead at half-time and to win the game as that outcome is rather generously priced at 3/4. Shakhtar have managed to attain such in their last two away games against Zorya and they do have the capability to do so today and thus that is my call.

Verdict: Shakhtar Donetsk to lead half-time/full-time at 3/4.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

All Boys vs Newells Old Boys – draw at 39/20.

We all know how hard draws are to call but this game simply has to be a draw, doesn’t it? All Boys’ home record flatters the newly-promoted outfit with five wins from seven games being a little outrageous for the hosts to enter this game with. They’re not a particularly good side but their effort and determination is utterly flawless so my respect goes out to them, especially as they’ll have fulfilled the dreams of many of their players by beating both Boca Juniors and River Plate at home already this season. However, from a quality perspective, it’s hard to envision this run continuing as they’re simply not a very good side. Their opponents Newells Old Boys are in a similar position but they’ve managed to perfect the art of not being beaten due to experience in the Primera Division. Newells have played six away games this season in the Primera Division and they’ve not lost any of them. In fact, they’ve kept three consecutive clean sheets away from home due to their unadventurous style and their confidence is strong as a result. Newells don’t have the necessary attackers to be a potent force, unlike when they had Paraguayan international striker Oscar Cardozo in their ranks. However, Newells are smart enough to know it so they defend instead and try the odd counter-attack. Their hosts will attack them at will tonight but without that additional spark of creativity or experience, I don’t think they’ll unlock the door. Newells have drawn five out of six away from home this season and given All Boys’ continual efforts and desire to avoid being beaten, I anticipate a draw occurring here. As I mentioned earlier, draws are hard to call and do approach with caution but with the above in mind, I think the odds on the draw could be shorter.

Verdict: Draw at 39/20.

Estudiantes De La Plata vs Huracan – home win to nil at 21/20.

Estudiantes are a puzzling side. They’re the absolute masters of their craft at home but they’re simply ineffectual away from home, which is why I can only see Velez Sarsfield winning the Apertura this time around. Estudiantes play football like Banfield try to but a lot more efficiently. The quality of playmaker Veron, the pace of Gaston Fernandez, the tactical prowess of Sabella – all of these things contribute massively to the hosts and with such quality on their side, it’s no surprise to see that Estudiantes have won six out of six at home, averaging scoring two goals per home game whilst keeping six consecutive clean sheets. In Argentina, Estudiantes are the epitome of monopolising possession and taking their chances and that’s what makes them so good. Few other sides in Argentina can attain this and their opponents Huracan aren’t one of them, simply put. Huracan have a good academy but as with most feeder clubs, they’re forced to sell their youngsters to survive and thus we have an average-at-best side that rarely trouble the big guns in Argentina. Three defeats in four games says that Huracan aren’t bringing much into this game momentum-wise and with five defeats from seven away games already this season, it’s hard to see Huracan doing anything tonight against a vastly superior Estudiantes side.

Huracan lost this fixture 2-0 last season and a similar scoreline would fit quite nicely here tonight. Ironically, Huracan have lost all of their away games this season without scoring a goal. The only two games that Huracan have scored in away from home have been games that they’ve won – the others they’ve lost heavily. I therefore feel that Estudiantes winning this game without conceding is far too generously priced at 21/20 so that’s my call here.

Verdict: Estudiantes De La Plata to win to nil at 21/20.

Salzburg vs SV Mattersburg – home win to nil at evens.

This preview is largely similar to the above preview minus the dominance of the hosts domestically. Salzburg are one of the top sides in Austria but a lack of firepower has crippled their displays, unfortunately. However, defensively, they’re the best side in the country for me which is the sole reason they’re not in the relegation zone right now as their goalscoring record has been paltry this season. The record of Salzburg having beaten Mattersburg at home for six consecutive meetings is somewhat expected given the gulf in class. However, keeping five clean sheets in those six games shows an extra class that not all dominant domestic sides possess and this is something that I like about Salzburg. Salzburg will win but they’ll win efficiently and thus I like to consider the idea of them winning without conceding. Salzburg have kept two clean sheets from their last three games, which were against fellow Bundesliga title hopefuls Sturm Graz and European giants Juventus, both of which were away from home. Therefore, the idea of Salzburg not conceding in this game doesn’t really concern me (famous last words, eh?!). However, Salzburg worryingly haven’t scored in any of those three games and scoring is proving to be a real problem for them this season with neither Wallner nor Boghossion proving to be a consistent answer to their continual questions about who will score goals for them, hence the risk element in this game. Nontheless, Salzburg are the better of these two sides by a long way and given the defensive ineptitude of Mattersburg on the road, you have to fancy Salzburg to win this one today. If Salzburg get that ever-evasive goal in this game then they really should win without conceding – Mattersburg simply aren’t a very good away side – and therefore I like Salzburg winning to nil at evens instead of the outright win, which is far too short for a fairly impotent side.

Verdict: Salzburg to win to nil at evens.

Germinal Beerschot vs Anderlecht – away win at 7/10.

You could be forgiven for thinking Anderlecht are priced too short to win at a side that has only lost once at home in the Eerste Klasse this season but I would disagree here. The reason I disagree is because Anderlecht’s attack is the best in Belgium when they turn up and with De Sutter returning from injury and Lukaku finally discovering his potential again, Anderlecht now look a threat again. Anderlecht won at AA Gent in their last game, demonstrating their power, so they won’t fear a trip to face old foes Germinal Beerschot here. Indeed, Anderlecht have beaten GBA for six out of their last six meetings in the Eerste Klasse, two of which were in Antwerp, in which they scored eight goals too. Anderlecht are by far the superior of these two sides and when their offensive power is in sight, few sides are capable of resisting. GBA have only lost once at home this season, which was in their last home game against a rejuvenated Standard de Liege side. The only reason GBA are so good at home is because they fear losing so they don’t attack, hence their amazing defensive record. However, the better sides in the division tend to get good results here because they have the incision to penetrate the resilient GBA defence and that tends to be enough to open the floodgates. Anderlecht have that incision in abundance with Boussoufa and Legear in midfield causing problems and Suarez, Lukaku, and finally De Sutter all scoring the goals. Anderlecht really should have too much for GBA and if the hosts didn’t have their stentorian defensive record so far this season then I’d expect 1/2 on the away win which is why I find value in odds of 7/10.

Verdict: Anderlecht to win at 7/10.

Gremio vs Atletico Paranaense – home win at 4/5.

I have the utmost respect for Atletico Paranaense for their excellent displays in Serie A this season but let’s face it – they’re fourth in the table because the sides that are better than they are have been inconsistent. There is no place amongst Serie A’s elite for a side that has lost well over 50% of its away games this season. Indeed, only five sides in this division have lost more away games than Atletico Paranaense and all of those sides are in the bottom-half of the table, unsurprisingly. It’s Atletico’s immense home form that has gifted them a lofty fourth place in the table but their away form is poor because they’re not great defensively and they don’t score many goals. In fact, only Ceara, Vasco da Gama, and relegated Gremio Prudente have scored less away goals than Atletico Paranaense this season, which demonstrates the lack of power that Atletico possess. I can’t and wouldn’t take anything away from their impressive win at Flamengo last match but I’d hurriedly point out that it’s their only win in five consecutive away games as that’s the statistic that interests me more.

There’s a damn good reason that Atletico haven’t beaten Gremio in five attempts and it’s because they’re not good enough to. They’ve lost three out of their last four visits to face Gremio, drawing the other encounter, and only scoring in two of those games. Gremio haven’t been themselves this season but the latter stages of this campaign has brought out the best in them and they’re now a force at home again, as ever. Let’s be realistic here – there’s three games remaining in Serie A this season for each side and if Gremio win this game then they move into the Copa Libertadores spot, if only temporarily, depending on the Botafogo vs Internacional game, which I doubt Internacional would be upset at losing given how much they hate Gremio! However, If Gremio win this game then they have a trip to Guarani, which again they should win, and then the last game of their season is at home to Botafogo. Presuming that Botafogo win their other two games then the Copa Libertadores place entirely hinges upon this game, which massively benefits Gremio as they’re the superior of the two sides and are untouchable at home. Therefore, this game means a lot for Gremio and let’s face it – they have the quality to win this game – all they need is the application, which they really should have. The only side to take points from a trip to Gremio in Gremio’s last five home games was bitter rivals Internacional with everyone else (including Sao Paulo and Cruzeiro!) taking a beating. Gremio really should have too much for their high-flying opposition tonight – I’m just surprised that the odds are as generous as they are!

Verdict: Gremio to win at 4/5.

Hrvatski Dragovoljac vs Dinamo Zagreb – away win to nil at 4/5.

This was so very close to being my game of the day because of the laughably good value available on the encounter but it just missed out, unfortunately. I still love it though!

Statistically speaking, the hosts are the most impotent side in the division and the visitors have the best defensive record in the division. The newly-promoted hosts fight hard but have little quality, hence them being bottom of the table with eleven defeats in fifteen games. The hosts average scoring just over a goal per every two home games whilst leaking nearly two goals per home game. The visitors, however, have won five out of seven on the road whilst averaging scoring nearly two goals per game and conceding less than a goal per every two away games. Dinamo have won six consecutive games ahead of this encounter and they’ve not conceded in seven consecutive games in all competitions due to their new-look solid defence under Halilhodzic so you have to fancy Dinamo here.

To be fair, the bookies fancy Dinamo here – they’ve priced them at around 1/9 to win this game, which I think is about fair! However, realistically speaking, the hosts are the worst side in the Prva Liga and the visitors are the biggest and best side in Croatia. The hosts don’t score goals and the visitors don’t concede goals. I therefore simply cannot fathom how the bookies have made a 1/9 away win into a 4/5 away win without conceding but that’s not for me to know – it’s solely my role to capitalise upon it and hopefully we shall!

Verdict: Dinamo Zagreb to win to nil at 4/5.

Mlada Boleslav vs Slavia Prague – home win at evens.

Slavia Prague have enjoyed a good record at Mlada Boleslav over the years for obvious reasons but that surely has to change today? Mlada Boleslav are one of the most potent sides in the division, especially at home where they average scoring over two goals per home game. Their defending is questionable and they’re not the finished article yet but they’re a nightmare side to face away from home as league leaders Viktoria Plzen found here recently. Mlada sometimes impale themselves upon their own sword with inept defending but their attacking prowess is simply unquestionable with Kulic, Taborsky, Charamosta, and Reznicek taking turns in cruising past defences, hence Mlada’s five wins, two draws, and just one defeat at home in the Gambrinus Liga this season. There’s pace and flair in this side in abundance, two things that visitors Slavia Prague greatly lack this season so I fancy the hosts a lot here. Slavia Prague are also somewhat inept defensively but unlike their flambuoyant hosts, Slavia Prague lack any kind of consistent threat in front of goal, hence their apparent relegation battle. The only side that Slavia Prague have beaten in their last five games is Viktoia Zizkov from the division below, which speaks volumes, really. If we assess the six sides that Slavia Prague have faced away from home this season then it’s more than apparent as to why Slavia Prague are in such dire straits by winning just one of them. Slavia have faced Brno, Teplice, Hradec Kralove, Slovacko, Usti nad Labem, and Marila Pribram, five of which are expected to be in the relegation battle this season and two of which have only just beeen promoted. Despite a whole hosts of winnable games, Slavia Prague have played woefully and didn’t even deserve to win the one game that they did win back in August. Slavia are experienced enough to sometimes prevent sides from beating them but this is their first real test of the season away from home and it happens to be against a side that scores goals for fun. In my view, the scene is set for Mlada Bolelslav to sweep fallen giants Slavia Prague aside easily in this game and odds of evens on the home win appears to be far too respective of the side that Slavia Prague were rather than the side they are so my call is the home win.

Verdict: Mlada Boleslav to win at evens.

Blackpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

I think I may impose a ban on myself writing a preview when “Blackpool” and “over 2.5 goals” are listed in the same sentence because it always stems from the fact that Blackpool cannot defend and always attack as a result and usually score too, thanks the innovative ways of manager Ian Holloway. I like Blackpool a lot for their team spirit and never-say-die attitude but there isn’t a game this season that I can see them keeping a clean sheet in, barring a miracle! They’re missing key goalkeeper Gilks for this game through injury and that won’t help them improve their record of having gone over 2.5 goals in all five of their home games so far this season in the Premier League, nor will it help their record of having conceded in all of those games, including a game against nine-man West Bromwich Albion. The big question is whether Wolves will join the party here by scoring but I feel that they really should. Their record of late is poor with three consecutive defeats but I still feel that record is harsh; Wolves shouldn’t have lost any of those games despite one being against Manchester United and another being against Arsenal. Wolves have fought admirably in all three games and should have taken something from each game but stupid mistakes defensively and not taking their chances when given have punished Wolves in recent times. Nonetheless, a leaky Blackpool defence is exactly what they need to further their goal tally from two onwards after their defeat against Bolton and I half-fancy them to get a result here as McCarthy usually sets his sides up very well tactically. However, I wouldn’t dream of entering the 1×2 market in this crazy game because anything could happen. Over 2.5 goals at 4/5 looks right up my street though because we should see a lot of goals here if Wolves take at least one of their chances!

Team news – Blackpool miss Rachubka, Clarke, Baptiste, Martin, and Gilks for this game with Almond and Keinan as doubts. Wolves miss Craddock, Zubar, and Guediora for this game with Edwards and Ward listed as doubts.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
