Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Hamburger SV and Paderborn 07.
I do love this time of year because it’s when Hamburger SV, without fail, implode. I have nothing against them, per se – it’s just amusing to see it keep happening despite them having more money to spend than the rest of the Bundesliga 2 put together. Alright, they’ve a game in hand but they’re six points adrift of Darmstadt 98, and without a win in four games. Is it a stretch to call this a ‘must win’ game? I don’t think so. I think all of their games are for the rest of the season, and things tend to go wrong when they play that way.
The talent is there, especially in Jatta and Glatzel, but the effectiveness is not. At no point am I convinced that they’ll keep a clean sheet, and that won’t change here. Sure, they might win if Paderborn don’t show up but I wouldn’t bank on it because Hamburger SV are horribly unreliable. They do tend to be good for goals though. At this stage of the season, the media really drills down on them, and they look nervous. That leads to more defensive errors than usual, and more goals conceded – and they need to win all of their matches. More of the same can be expected here.
Paderborn know all about defensive errors; they’ve been making them all season long. But for Michel’s brilliance in the first-half of their campaign, they’d have been in the bottom six. He’s left now though; off for a swansong at Union Berlin. They’ve only won a couple of matches since he left, unsurprisingly. What’s weird about that is that they’re not struggling to score goals in his absence; they’re simply defending even worse than before, and I have no clue as to why. I mean, against Erzgebirge Aue it was purely long balls over the top that somehow bewildered Paderborn’s defenders time and time again. If you can’t defend against that at this level, then…well…
Anyway, the Paderborn attack looks rather good. Ademi has led the line well, Srbeny looks better because of his arrival, Platte has been good all season long, and more goals are coming from other midfielders too. It’s far from a perfect time for Paderborn but they’re spirited and they attack well; that tends to be enough to disrupt Hamburger SV. Let’s wait and see though, eh? No 1×2 market for me, but backing goals just makes sense.
Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 49/50.
