Today’s free tip is in the Brazilian Serie A encounter between Vitoria and Sport Recife.

I can’t really say that Vitoria is a better team than Sport Recife. Frankly, they’re similar teams with similar strengths and weaknesses. However, the redeeming strength of both teams is being very strong at home – it’s how they survive, after all.

Vitoria have won three out of their last four Serie A home games. It’s taken good teams and/or good displays to beat them on their own patch this season, as per usual – that’s why only Fluminense and Internacional have managed it thus far. Ceara, Parana, and Chapecoense have all lost against them at the Estadio Manoel Barradas Salvador in Bahia, though. Again, that’s how Vitoria stay up – they win home games against similar/slightly weaker teams than themselves.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Vitoria will be demoralised here. They took a pounding off bitter rivals Bahia in their last match, going down 4-1. However, Vitoria are natural fighters; if anything, I can see that result spurring them on rather than hindering them. Vitoria are the kind of team that know no fear. They want to work hard, score goals, and win games. I wouldn’t trust them to manage games, per se, but I would trust them to outscore a number of Serie A teams at home, Sport Recife included. Vitoria may not have much quality but nobody in Brazil works harder than the Bahia clubs and with a sprinkling of decent attacking options like Neilton, Wallyson, and Rhayner in their ranks, I believe they’ll do enough to pick up a potentially invaluable three points today. Let’s not overlook that they recently acquired midfielder Arouca too. He’s seen better days but he lends Vitoria a level of experience and quality that they seldom see so I am optimistic he’ll play his part here too.

Visitors Sport Recife are poor on the road. They have been for as long as I can remember. That’s probably got something to do with the time that they used to paint rocks green to make their own “pitch” look like it had more grass than it did. I was I was joking about that but they actually did do so. Playing in Recife is a nightmare. I seldom oppose Sport Recife there. On the road, though, it’s generally easy to go against them. To be fair to tonight’s visitors, they have sprung the odd surprise this season but it’s always come in games where their opponents have underestimated their battling nature, which simply won’t happen in Bahia tonight. Barring some Bastos magic, I think they’re in a spot of bother here.

Sport Recife have lost four out of their last six away games against Vitoria. That’s not because Vitoria are better than they are. As I said above, it’s because these two teams excel on their own turf. They know the value of home wins. I honestly don’t think that Sport Recife have enough quality nor energy to cope with this relentless Vitoria side.

Therefore, my call is a home win.

Verdict: Vitoria to win at 11/10.
