Today’s free tip is in the Spanish Primera Liga encounter between Valencia CF and Getafe.

I’ve been either tempted to oppose, or have actually opposed, Valencia CF ever since they stupidly sacked Marcelino. I’m going to continue to do so too, even if they win 10-0 tonight, because it’s 100% the right thing to do. It’s almost as if owner Peter Lim forgot all about the disaster that Valencia CF were pre-Marcelino, you know? The brutal reality is that Valencia CF were closer to relegation than a title for many moons prior to the appointment of the outspoken boss. Why would things be any different now he’s gone again? It’s not as if the problems have been magically solved.

The difference with a Marcelino team and a ‘normal’ manager’s team is that Marcelino knows how to get his players to do what he wants them to do. Even if those players have big egos, are temperamental, or are pure mercenaries – he knows how to get the best out of them. He knows precisely what players he needs to plug each and every gap, and he knows how to get his team to play more than one style. For this kind of club, he was the best possible manager around – and Lim sacked him. Even the impatient Valencia CF fans have berated their own for this bizarre decision of his, which says it all, really.

What’ll basically happen is that, whether tomorrow or in three months time, Valencia CF will revert back into a nobody club. Their best players will leave, and they’ll bring in more journeymen that don’t give a shit. The performances will become fragmented, spineless, and ineffectual, and they’ll become incapable of executing a tactical plan well. It’s sad, but that’s the core of Valencia CF nowadays – only Marcelino masked it. This guy is a genius! You know, in summer he almost managed to convince Atletico Madrid to part with big bucks for a headless chicken like Rodrigo? It’s verging upon black magic, really. But yeah – bluntly put, without Marcelino, Valencia CF will not function well. The absence of Soler, Piccini, and Gaya tonight is not going to help their cause either.

I think it’s fair to say that Madrid outfit Getafe haven’t been at their best this season but that’s to be expected after a heroic campaign last season. Teams know what to expect now, and they will try harder to do so because of what Getafe proved last season. Furthermore, there’s more pressure on tonight’s visitors to prove their worth, which has led to a more adventurous style. The more risk taken have led to more errors, which has led to relatively patchy form. They’re not losing games because Bordalas knows what he’s doing but they’re not winning enough either.

In terms of being a ‘stopper’ team, though, Getafe are really good. They’re experienced, composed, good on the break, and organised. They’ve got a good combination of battlers, class acts, veterans, and promising youngsters. They’ve got enough of everything required to take advantage of a Valencia CF that is basically in disarray. Getafe are everything that Marcelino-less Valencia CF are not. They could have been but they’re not now, and their results will show it more and more as the season unwinds.

Getafe playing their usual game should not lose this game, basically. Therefore, I consider a good value bet to be laying the home team.

Verdict: Getafe to win with a +0.5 Asian Handicap at 21/20.
