Today’s free tip is in the Bundesliga 2 encounter between SV Sandhausen and Karlsruher SC

If Sandhausen weren’t concerned pre-season, then they should be now. They were crap pre-season, and have been even worse since the season began. I’m not worried about them losing 4-0 against RB Leipzig. However, I’m extremely worried for them when they’re getting turned over 3-0 by a very average Jahn Regensburg team that could conceivably be in the relegation dogfight this season.

No goals in three games now for Sandhausen. Is anyone surprised? They signed an average target man – Testroet – from Erzgebirge Aue pre-season, who simply had a very settled group that supported him at his previous club; that’s why he thrived. There’s not much by way of width at this club though; that’s not what they’re about. Only Esswein, really. They’ve got Keita-Ruel up top to run in behind the defence so the purpose of Testroet’s arrival is unclear to me at this stage. Ouahim was indirectly told he wasn’t good enough last season, and loaned out – but now he’s back, and has already made an appearance – make of that what you will.

I just don’t know what Sandhausen’s idea for this season was. Gaudino, unproven everywhere he’s been, as star midfielder? Bochum’s number two – Drewes – becoming their new number one? Hohn from Darmstadt 98? The only player I think they’ve done well to bring in was Soukou, and he’s fighting the Alamo. Yes, he’s a winger, which should mean we’ll see Esswein on the left more often, which isn’t ideal, but if they’re taking this route then why is Keita-Ruel starting ahead of Testroet? I really don’t understand it. Lots of new faces + unconvincing game-plan = disjointed displays, which is why they’re the mess that they are right now.

It doesn’t get much more consistent at Bundesliga 2 level than Karlsruher SC either. They’re not the best team in the division; far from it, really. However, you always know what you’re going to get from this team ,especially in the first five months of the season. They’re a very disciplined, organised, and consistent team with a predictable and yet hard to contain attack. They’ve strengthened pre-season, adding more depth to a somewhat thin squad. Their starting eleven is strong enough, and they’re generally a pain to play against because of it.

Karlsruher SC are gritty, tenacious, and they give a shit. They’ll give little away, take their chances well, and usually have the measure of the average Bundesliga 2 team that they come up against. Yes, they’re stronger at home than on the road but they’re still a very capable outfit, and they tend to have a real advantage at this stage of the season because of how ridiculously settled they always seem to be nowadays.

They’ve already had a strong start, today’s visitors. They had a tough battle in northern Germany on the opening day but still won 3-1 in Rostock. Then they comfortably breezed past Darmstadt 98 last time out, partially thanks to the large number of sales at the club, and partially because a lot of their remaining squad were hit by Covid-19. Then they hammered lower league Sportfreund Lotte in the DFB Pokal, which is a more impressive result than it looks as that team has a lot of history in the Cup in recent years. They look fresh, fit, and ready to wreak havoc, Karlsruher SC. A disjointed and wholly unconvincing Sandhausen should not be a significant obstacle for them here.

For me, the away win is worth taking here.

Verdict: Karlsruher SC to win at 13/10.
