Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen

Free

Today’s featured game is the Bundesliga encounter between heavyweights Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen. Reigning champions Bayern Munich are yet to fully start their campaign with some unconvincing displays thus far whereas Werder have started as they no doubt intend to continue – scoring and conceding heavily!

I hate to stereotype but Bayern Munich are three elements – Louis Van Gaal, Arjen Robben, and Frank Ribery. Robben has still got his injury from the World Cup so Bayern are reduced to two out of their three figureheads, although that should be enough to see them beat most sides in the Bundesliga. They’ve not been great so far but they couldn’t have hoped for a better side to play today than Werder Bremen. Why? Well, Werder Bremen are an attacking side who obviously therefore pay little attention to defence. On top of that, they’re missing their best defenders – Mertesacker and Naldo respectively – and they’re also missing star ex-Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro. Therefore, not only is Werder’s usually potent attack hindered but their abject defending is going to get even worse. I usually have doubts over Bayern breaking sides down without Robben but Ribery should have so much space that I expect Bayern to dominate here. If you’re bold then you can look at the handicap but in a game between big sides, I tend to avoid that kind of bet. For me, the value is in over 3.5 goals as both sides still have the capability to score but Werder simply cannot defend as a 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on the opening day of the season proved, not to mention their 4-2 win at home to Koln last match. Five out of the last eight encounters between these two sides have gone over 3.5 goals and all the missing players listed above will surely only increase the chances of this bet being successful hence my call today.

Verdict: Over 3.5 goals at 11/10.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

BATE Borisov vs Naftan Novopolotsk – under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

This is a bold call but the odds make it worthwhile because the way I see it, this game will either be extremely low-scoring or an absolute drubbing. As much as I love Naftan Novopolotsk, they’re out of their league here by taking on reigning champions BATE Borisov in terms of quality. However, that’s not the end of all assessments regarding this game as we all know. Naftan are playing very well at the moment, which compensates for an atrocious start to their Vysshaya Liga campaign. They’re a much better side than the league table currently indicates and bizarrely enough, their run of good form was sparked by a 0-0 draw here against BATE Borisov a few months ago. To get a result off BATE, you have to defend very well as they rarely concede any goals and a Naftan side that doesn’t generally travel well will have a lot of work to do to get points here in general. However, they do have a chance today, to be fair. They enter this game on the back of three wins in four games and are facing a BATE Borisov side who will be looking at their trip to Kiev next week in European football rather than focusing on this game. I expect the likes of Rodionov to be rested here, particularly after seeing action for Belarus lately, and BATE to generally control he game as usual but fail to be as incisive. A goal from Naftan today may upset my bet but at 6/5, the call is worth considering because Naftan are very good at defending and I expect BATE to field a partial second-string for this game.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Millonarios Bogota vs Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota – lay Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota at 10/11.

You should never be able to lay a home side in Colombia at 10/11 and that’s entirely what sparks this bet. Forget quality – away wins simply don’t happen on a consistent basis in this country; fact. Despite being by far the better side nowadays, Independiente have failed to win here for five consecutive visits because sides rarely win away from home in this country. Independiente have done well to win three out of their four away games already this season, admittedly, but that run cannot last in the Primera A. Look at Real Cartagena last match, for example – they travelled to a rock-bottom Envigado that hadn’t taken a point in seven consecutive games and yet lost despite being the better side between the two. Millonarios aren’t great – they’ve been a mid-table side for a while now – but they’re solid at home because Colombian sides have to be. I’ll hold up my hands if I am wrong here but giving an away win in Colombia at shocking odds of 3/5 is absolutely suicidal; the home side will always have the advantage in this country either via altitude, support, or pitch.

Verdict: Lay Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota at 10/11.

Portsmouth vs Ipswich Town – away win at 29/20.

The problems of Portsmouth have long been well-documented and I don’t think any of you need me to tell you the state that they’re in – there’s not much  that the Championship table doesn’t reveal about them currently with three defeats in four games and just one goal scored along the way. They’re not conceding heavily but each goal against them counts massively at the moment because they’re not scoring goals, understandably, which is why they’re currently in the relegation zone. Visitors Ipswich Town, however, have started very brightly. I wonder if this is the season that I’ve been expecting since Roy Keane took over? It was inevitable that he’d do a good jo there; the question was how long it would take. Ipswich were a solid club to begin with, very much untouchable at home in general – the task was to get them performing away from home. They were more unlucky than anything last year with that barren run of draws that saw them lose confidence with continued media hype etc. However, they’ve started with a real intent this year and three wins from four games shows that all too well. Indeed, the only side to take points off Ipswich was Middlesbrough and in the North-East of England, that’s not exactly a bad result! Ipswich’s defence has been tight and attack clinical so they’ve got all that they need to make promotion a reality this year, particularly with no outstanding favourites for promotion this time. All in all, Ipswich have a better manager, a better team, and also have momentum so the odds on the away win look good today.

Verdict: Ipswich Town to win at 29/20.

Cesena vs AC Milan – lay AC Milan at 31/20.

Laying AC Milan despite an attack boasting sensational attacking talents Ronaldinho, Robinho, Pato, and Ibrahimovic? Am I crazy? Probably. However, there is a popular saying known as “Too many cooks spoil the broth”; I wonder if that will be the case here?

I didn’t expect the kind of performance that AC Milan gave on the opening day of the season, admittedly – they were outstanding against an abject Lecce side and deservedly annihlated them. However, this is a very different game against a very different side. Lecce did well last year in Serie B through scoring goals; Cesena did well last year through keeping sides out. They’ve already claimed an impressive draw at the Stadio Olimpico against AS Roma thanks to an inspired display from former Roma goalkeeper Antonioli but that’s the kind of spirit this side has – they have no concept nor acceptance of losing. Cesena aren’t a massively talented side but in terms of organisation, they’re one of the hardest in the division to break down. I will confess that AC are one of the few sides with the individual talent available to them to unlock this defence but the odds on them winning this game with the above in mind is farcical. They have to integrate their new players and then take on a battling and well-organised side on a compact pitch away from home when AC Milan play an expansive passing game so why are they so heavy here? This is another cup final for Cesena and they’ll definitely treat it as such so I think laying AC Milan could have some value here, as bold as it unquestionably is to call.

Verdict: Lay AC Milan at 31/20.

Empoli vs Triestina – under 2.5 goals at 3/4.

This game has under 2.5 goals all over it for me. Empoli have already proven this year that life without star striker Eder is going to be near impossible with goals increasingly hard to come by. Although their overall strength and untouchable status at home makes them favourites for this game, they lack heavily in front of goal so I have my doubts over them today. However, they’re playing one of the weakest sides in Serie B at the moment – Triestina – so should still be able to record a win here. Hell, Triestina are only still in this division because they bought Ancona’s license following their exclusion from the division due to financial difficulties and Triestina certainly haven’t improved their squad over the summer. They’re a resilient side but they have little else in their favour so they should be relegated this year. However, at this early stage of the season, I don’t see Empoli having enough to blow Triestina out of the water and I don’t see Triestina capitulating entirely too early so I can see under 2.5 goals here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 3/4.

Queretaro vs Santos Laguna – away win at 11/10.

I’m not a massive advocate of away wins in Mexico but this one is one if I’ve ever seen one! Queretaro have barely managed to stay in the Primera Division since their fairly recent promotion and only their fairly good defence has been responsible for doing so. However, they’ve lost a lot of potency this year as Isaac Romo has stopped bailing them out and thus they’re not scoring goals, hence the fact that only Atlas have scored less goals than they have this season. Unfortunately for the hosts, they’re facing a Santos Laguna side with five wins in six games whilst averaging scoring 2.5 goals per game so they’re really on-fire currently. On top of that, they’re defending well too with a goal conceded every two games on average so Santos are looking the real deal currently, especially with ex-Birmingham City striker Benitez doing all the damage in attack. There’s plenty of experience and talent in this Santos side and although Santos have a trip to Guatemala to face Municipal in a few days time, I still think they’re capable of fielding a squad here strong enough to win the game. 11/10 looks inviting for the away win although I’d leave it if it drops – away wins in Mexico are never my favourite!

Verdict: Santos Laguna to win at 11/10.

Dolcan Zabki vs Piast Gliwice – away win at evens.

Piast are still one of the better sides in the division despite a barren run of four consecutive draws as they struggle to find their feet in front of goal. They’re still outplaying sides because they’re superior to the majority of Liga 1 sides but if you don’t score goals, you don’t win games, hence their predicament. However, manager Brosz moved quickly to resolve the situation by loaning Brazilian striker Maycon, who is frankly too good for this league. He was excellent in Belarus before signing for Jagiellonia Bialystok and should be able to showcase his talents in this league very well indeed, as well as most likely earning Piast their much-desired promotion. It also helps Piast’s goal-drought that they’re facing one of the worst sides in the division today – Dolcan Zabki. The hosts are bottom of the table with five defeats in six games and relegation looks a very real prospect as a result. They’ve leaked two goals per game on average and scored once every three games on average so they’ve got real issues to stay in the division. Bluntly, there’s a massivel gulf in quality between these two sides and if Maycon makes the required impact then I fully expect it to show today with Piast claiming three points despite away wins in Liga 1 being tough to call.

Verdict: Piast Gliwice to win at evens.

Flota Swinoujscie vs Gornik Leczna – home win at evens.

Flota is one of the hardest away games in the division and Gornik Leczna are abysmal travellers; any more need to be said here? Flota’s re-laid pitch still worked to their advantage in their last home game despite it not being the usual quagmire with Piast Gliwice being the side unfortunate enough to play there with the game ending 0-0. Flota are playing very well this season and with great spirit so they must be taken seriously, at least for now. They’re a traditional home side as they proved last season with nine wins and just four defeats in seventeen home games. They’ve won once and drawn once in their two home games this season but are yet to concede a home goal so you can see their strength. Goalscoring is their usual enemy but they notched up two at Warta Poznan last match so they should bring momentum into this game in front of goal and their overall ability is superior to that of their opponents so they should do damage today. Gornik Leczna, as I mentioned earlier, really can’t play well away from home. They were terrible on the road last year with just three wins in seventeen games (including seven defeats) and they’ve already lost three out of three on the road this season. They’re not a particularly bad side; they just don’t score goals away from home so any goals conceded tend to be somewhat fatal. Given their inability on the road, I don’t see Gornik scoring today so the question is whether Flota will score or not and whilst the hosts are at evens, I think they’re worth a punt despite goalscoring not being their strongpoint.

Verdict: Flota Swinoujscie to win at evens.

Ostrowiec Swietokryzski vs Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala – away win at 13/10.

One of the weakest sides in the division at home to the most in-form side with the away win at 13/10? Yes please! Ostrowiec have been atrocious this season due to their inabilty to score goals as two goals in six games indicates all too well. They’re not that bad at home and they defend with relative competence but the fact remains that nobody has scored less goals than they have and the two sides who match their dreary record are two of the three that are below them in the table, which bodes ominously for today’s hosts. They’ve already lost twice at home this season because they don’t score goals so why not again today? Podbeskidzie aren’t the best side in Liga 1 in my opinion but they’re certainly playing like it and why is that? Because they’re scoring goals. They average scoring nearly three goals per game currently, including four goals per away game on average, so why not give them a shot here? They’ve won four out of their last five games and were beyond unlucky to drop points last match against LKS Lodz after dominating the game and deserving to win at least 4-1. They’re tight at the back and have three extremely capable goalscorers in Demjan, Cieslinski, and supporting midfielder Rogalski so I really fancy the away win here today, especially with there also being a gap in quality (favouring the visitors) to bolster their momentum drive.

Verdict: Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala to win at 13/10.

Trelleborg vs AIK Solna – home win at 13/10.

This was very nearly game of the day but the Bundesliga game just beat it! The problems of AIK Solna both on and off the field have been well-documented this season and explains their slump all too well. AIK’s problem has always been scoring goals, you see, so even when they play well they’re not convincing enough to win. Now consider that they don’t score at all and don’t defend as well and it makes them look rather suspect, I feel. Only battling Brommapojkarna have scored less goals than AIK have in the Allsvenskan this season and although AIK rarely get annihlated, they still tend to lose.  They’ve lost seven out of ten on the road this season because they’ve conceded fifteen goals and scored just four times, which is a rather condemning record, in my opinion. AIK haven’t scored in six consecutive Allsvenskan away games and are unfortunately facing a rejuvenated Trelleborg side that has remembered how to win at home. Trelleborg have won five consecutive home games in their bid to escape the drop, scoring a lot of goals along the way and generally showing an awful lot of belief too. They’ve had to come from behind in some games and dig deep in others but they’ve emerged triumphant each time of late so it’s hard to ignore them today. They’re a mid-table side at best in this division but they’re more than capable of punching above their weight in a desperate bid to avoid the dreaded drop so I expect a full-blooded display from them today against their more illustrious but under-achieving opponents, which should be enough to see them claim three points ultimately.

Despite AIK’s slump, this game won’t be easy for Trelleborg, although it’s interesting to note that AIK haven’t scored in their last three visits to Trelleborg, losing their last two. I fancy the in-form hosts to overcome their lacklustre opponents today and the odds are good enough to take a chance on, in my opinion.

Verdict: Trelleborg to win at 13/10.
