Today’s secondary featured game is the Veikkausliiga encounter between JJK Jyvaskyla and MyPa Anjalankoski. Both sides surprised me in their respective opening games as JJK’s trip to Espoo was anything but a goalfest following superb displays from each side’s goalkeeper and as MyPa collapsed at home to Alanders IFK Mariehamn in a 0-2 defeat.

We should hopefully see an altogether more predictable affair here, however. JJK brought in some very good players pre-season, as some of you may know already. Club legend Wusu was re-signed to attack potency to their attack and IFK Mariehamn attacker Gruborovics was also signed to give the hosts a greater attacking threat. They also drafted in midfielders Manninen and Korte to bolster their ranks, although it’s the former two that have captured my interest the most. Although JJK have demonstrated that they don’t have the composure to hold leads yet, what they do have is a side capable of outscoring most other sides in this division and that’s the JJK side I expect to see today. JJK played well at Honka and the scoreline itself doesn’t really justify the game so we’ll hopefully see JJK find the net a few times today as they definitely have the firepower to do so. Besides, they’ve got no excuse if they don’t manage to do it this year – last year it was the supposed bad luck of their new stadium that denied them many points in their home games!

Visitors MyPa Anjalankoski are a strange side. Their new coach has turned them into a more attacking outfit as opposed to the dour, unadventurous football that they used to play and I think it’ll suit them more long-term to take this approach. However, they’re absolutely in a transitional period at the moment as their new players haven’t gelled and that was ultimately harmed them in their opening Veikkausliiga game at home to IFK Mariehamn. MyPa do have some capable players in midfield, most notably in old hand Antti Okkonen and emerging talent Saxman. Let’s also not forget the experienced and pacey Innanen in attack, who should prove to be a potent threat if given the necessary service. However, there’s not a lot else there to be fearful of and considering that this somewhat average team isn’t playing at its maximum capacity yet, it’s easy to see why they’ve already lost at home to IFK Mariehamn in rather dismal style. I’m confident MyPa will turn it on as the weeks go by and they’ll almost inevitably do enough to just about stay in the division but I don’t think they’ll be able to do that today, not based on what they showed last match.

JJK have now got an attack that can obtain a top four finish for them. Their defence is unlikely to back-up their attacking prowess and thus we should see many goal-filled games for them this season. MyPa can frustrate sides but their new coach seems to be making the side edge away from the “park-the-bus” routine that we’ve become all too familiar with seeing when MyPa are playing so I think they may go for the jugular here and try to surprise JJK by attacking them. It makes sense as JJK’s defence is their weakest area but it also lacks sanity as JJK’s attack should destroy them. For me, this is a clear over 2.5 goals game but the value looks to be in the home win at 11/10.

Verdict: JJK Jyvaskyla to win at 11/10.
