Kalmar vs Elfsborg Boras

Free

Before I begin today’s post, I’d like to pay my respects to Sir Bobby Robson who tragically passed away on friday m0rning. Unfortunately, this is the first opportunity I’ve had to express my sorrow at his loss for not only the English game but for all games of football. Sir Bobby Robson was a man who lived and breathed football which rapidly became contagious for those around him. He established himself as a true gentleman and a legend in many countries around Europe. After a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer, it unfortunately claimed his life. However, Sir Bobby Robson will not be forgotten by anyone. My respects to you, Sir Bobby.

Before I begin today’s preview, I’ve got two bets that I’d like you all to consider. The first one is regarding millionaires Real Madrid. Basically, my punt is that they won’t win anything and after a special request, a bookmaker has quoted me 6/4 on this selection. I think this is an absolute bargain. Everyone is bowing down to the quality of players that Real Madrid have signed and fair play to them – they’ve got some of the world’s best. But does that mean they’re the world’s best team? No. Have they actually resolved any issues they had last year? No. They had horrendous defensive issues last year which have actually worsened ahead of this season as they’ve not only lost their best defender in Fabio Cannavaro and good defender Gabriel Heinze but they’ve brought in Raul Albiol to replace Cannavaro and he’s nowhere near as good and particularly error-prone! They’ve brought in excellent players to replace the very good players they already had in those positions in some bizarre attempt to dominate football but it’s just not that simple anymore. A new manager has to forge this side, he has to make these big personalities play together and all whilst Florentino Perez stands behind him with a whip! There’s a lot of pressure here and I think they’re going to buckle under it. Interestingly, where do they go next season if they win nothing this year? That will be very interesting indeed!

My second bet is regarding Espanyol. Under Espanyol legend Mauricio Pochettino, the Barcelona-based outfit performed excellently towards the end of last season. Over the summer, they’ve made some very quietly impressive acquisitions and look to be building a very strong squad. I emailed a bookmaker about having Espanyol to finish 7th or above in the Primera Liga and was quoted good odds of 2/1. I would recommend this because I do feel they’ll be this year’s dark horses in the Primera Liga.

Now, onto today’s previewed game! Today we’re going to the Allsvenskan to witness a heavyweight encounter between Kalmar and Elfsborg Boras. These two sides finished first and second respectively in the Allsvenskan last year with just one point between them. In all honesty, I rate Elfsborg Boras as being slightly better than Kalmar but with the impeding return leg of their encounter with Braga in the UEFA Europa League looming large, you have to feel they’ll rest at least some players, especially considering they’re playing a side better than they are whilst trying to hold on to a valuable first leg away win. Kalmar also boast the best bout of current form in the Allsvenskan with six straight league wins whilst they’re actually unbeaten in eight games. Elfsborg Boras have some respectable form with three wins from five games but ultimately this should prove a leap too far for them, particularly with the knowledge that they’ve lost this fixture for two years running now. A home win at 6/4 certainly looks very much a worthwhile punt.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Kalmar vs Elfsborg Boras – home win at 6/4 – see introduction for full details.

Rapid Vienna vs Austria Karnten – home win with -1.75 handicap at 10/11. Although they let me down on the handicap mid-week after conceding a silly late goal, I fancy them to break the handicap today against an Austria Karnten side that have already lost two from two and don’t travel well at the best of times. Even if the hosts rest some players ahead of next week’s trip to Cyprus, I still expect them to break the handicap here with some ease. With odds of 10/11, I rather fancy this one!

FC Gomel vs Neman Grodno – home win at evens. I’m rather surprised that the odds for a home win here are at evens, to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, there’s not much between these two sides in terms of…well, anything, really! However, Gomel are one of the biggest goalscorers at home in the Vysshaya Liga and although their home record isn’t as favourable as I’d prefer it to be, they’re hosting a side that has amassed a feeble two away goals from five away games this season, a side that has lost four of their five away games and has conceded the most goals on the road in the entre division (well, on par with MTZ-RIPO Minsk and bottom club FC Smorgon). With all this in mind, you really have to feel a home win is a distinct possibility and it surely must be taken advantage of at evens?! It may even be worth a cheeky handicap here too, if you feel gutsy!

Naftan Novopolotsk vs Shakhtyor Soligorsk – home win at 6/5. You guys know there aren’t many sides I love to back at home more than Naftan Novopolotsk but for the first time, I have to emphasise caution with them here. The odds are superb as usual – 6/5 – but today they’re hosting a sleeping giant, in my opinion, although unfortunately this giant is very nearly awake. Shakhtyor Soligorsk have an impressive run of form stemming from their frankly heroic victory away to BATE Borisov. Since then, they’ve won twice and drawn once. They’re actually unbeaten in six games in the Vysshaya Liga so this should be a rather tight contest. However, the hosts themselves aren’t exactly in bad form with three straight wins under their belt. However, their overwhelming home record of five wins from six games leads me to just side with a home win here.

Torpedo Zhodino vs FC Vitebsk – home win at evens. Yet again I find myself surprised by odds on a home win in Belarus today! This time it’s Torpedo Zhodino who have earned my favour as they host FC Vitebsk. The visitors are a poor side and a run of eight defeats from thirteen games emphasies that point. The hosts are having a very good season as they currently possess third place in the table. Interestingly, they don’t have a lot of home form to judge them on as they’ve only played three home games this season thus far, which is a little odd. That said, they’ve won two and drawn once of those games without even conceding a goal and I can’t forsee that changing against lowly FC Vitebsk. This has the makings of a clear home win and I’ll be taking advantage of some generous odds of evens for this game!

Charleroi vs Club Brugge – away win with draw no bet at 5/6. Charleroi are a squad that have slightly lessened in strength over summer, in my opinion. They’re still respectable enough for me to take draw no bet for this game but I can’t see them winning it. Club Brugge are undoubtedly the better side out of these two but they enjoy being rather unpredictable, as was indicated by their home win against FC Lahti mid-week, winning 3-2 instead of the more comfortable victory that people were expecting. That said, they remain the better side here and should have enough to win the game. As I said earlier, I can’t see a home win here so to take the away win with draw no bet at 5/6 looks favourable.

Corinthians vs Avai – home win, both sides to score, over 2.5 goals. Little Avai are interestingly the most in-form side in the division at the moment. Even more interestingly, they travel to a Corinthians side who haven’t won in their last two games. For those reasons, I think we’ll have one hell of an explosion of a game here. I can’t see little Avai being able to fend off the mighty Corinthians in this game, particularly with their dominating home record of six wins from eight games. However, there’s not a lot of value in a home win here so I’d personally turn my attention towards either over 2.5 goals, both sides to score, or possibly even both of these recommendations. Why? Well, Corinthians haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last nine league encounters and Avai have scored in their past six games. On the other side, Corinthians have scored nine goals in their past five games and Avai, despite having only conceded in two of their past four games, surely cannot resist the force that is Corinthians on their own turf? Either way, I expect a lot of action and goals so over 2.5 or possibly even over 3.5 goals is certainly worth a shout.

Vitoria vs Sao Paulo – away win at 9/4. This is one of my most interesting but risky calls of the day. Sao Paulo are beginning to mount the table after an extremely slow start. They’ve won three games from their past four and are in a powerful position to continue their ascent. Vitoria are where Sao Paulo would like to be in the league table but are on the descent. In fact, if things go as I expect them to, these two sides could well be swapping places very shortly. Vitoria aren’t physically good enough to be where they are in the league – that’s a fact, unfortunately for them. With just one win from their past five games, Vitoria are beginning to look rather ominous as to where they’re actually going to finish. Sao Paulo are the better side from these two, no questions, particularly with their excellent midfield. However, what makes this call very interesting is that Vitoria boast the best home record in the division with six wins from one draw from seven home games. Yes, that makes them unbeaten at home and I’m backing an away win in a country that generally favours home wins on average. So yeah, this is going to be a very interesting game but Sao Paulo are more than capable of winning this game and I can’t simply pass up on the odds for them to do it, not when they’re 9/5!

Gremio vs Cruzeiro – home win at 4/5. Eight home games, six wins, no defeats, and top goalscorers in the whole division at home. I’m sure you can see why I think Gremio are going to win this game, particularly when matched up against Cruzeiro’s dismal away record of four defeats, one draw and one victory from six away games. Neither side are in great form which adds a little doubt to the game and they’re both capable of playing good football. However, taking a home win at 4/5 does seem rather favourable when all the statistics are analysed so I’m quite happy to go along with it.

Santo Andre vs Goias  – away win at 9/5. This is another very interesting call in Brazil! Two away games in the same round of fixtures?! Surely not? Well, we’ll soon find out! Goias are massively in-form having won their last four games consecutively and seem to be doing their utmost to mount a very unexpected title challenge being as they’re currently third in the table. They also boast one of the best away records in the division with four wins from seven games. What makes me even more convinced by an away win, however, is Santo Andre’s inability to beat anyone. They’ve lost three from their last four games and have only won twice at home all season. At worst, I could maybe see a fortunate draw for the hosts but I do expect an away win here and it’s good value at 9/5.

Jiangsu Shuntian vs Shanghai Shenhua – home win at 11/10. I’m beginning to dislike betting on the Chinese Super League because of the unpredictability and/or match fixing that goes on. However, this game does capture my attention today. Jiangsu Shuntian are a decent side with an impressive home record of five wins, one draw and just one defeat from seven home games. They’re entertaining Shanghai Shenhua, who are the better side in my opinion, but are not playing well and find themselves without an away victory all season, a run which has seen them lose five away games and draw three. That coupled with the fact that they’ve only managed to score away from home twice this season makes me think that taking a home win at 10/11 is a bargain here – at worst it should be a draw! At least if it’s an away win, you know this league is rigged!!!

Deportes Tolima vs Cucuta Deportivo – home win at 4/5. After a morale-boosting victory over Millonarios Bogota, Deportes Tolima have begun to rediscover the form that has seen them launch back-to-back title challenges in the league the last couple of campaigns. They made a poor start to this campaign but last match should have given them a boost and some momentum to take into this game against lowly Cucuta Deportivo. More often than not, the visitors have found themselves in no man’s land in the league and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. A home win at 4/5 oozes good value today.

Cibalia vs Slaven Koprivnica – home win at 6/4. This is quite a risky call, predominantly because Cibalia aren’t as good as Slaven Koprivnica. However, the visitors have a mid-week match with Norwegians Tromso to focus on, a game they’re more than capable of winning but they’ll need to be fully focused to do so. With one win already under their belt, Cibalia will be entering this game with fresh momentum. They also have the knowledge that they were one of the best sides in the Prva Liga at home last season with an impressive nine wins from sixteen games. This won’t be an easy game for either side but I expect Cibalia to take advantage of Slaven Koprivnica’s committments elsewhere and steal a win. At 6/4, this could be a worthwhile punt!

Hajduk Split vs Zadar – home win with -1.75 handicap. What do you need me to tell you about this game? Hajduk Split are the second best side in the country, in my opinion, but themselves and Dinamo Zagreb are absolutely light years ahead of the rest of the division. Zadar are at the lower end of the food chain in this league and I thoroughly expect it to show today regardless of Hajduk Split’s approaching make-or-break game with Slovakians MSK Zilina next week. I’ll be very surprised if the home side don’t beat the handicap today.

Bohemians vs Ceske Budejovice – home win at 6/4. This is a risky bet, indeed. Bohemians were absolute masters as for as home wins go last season. This season they let themselves down in the opening game at home to Sigma Olomouc, even if the visitors are and were the better side, losing 2-0. However, today they face a lesser opposition in Ceske Budejovice, a side they’re capable of beating and a side they need to beat to get some points on the board. Despite being very good at home, Bohemians know that relegation is never too far away from them. They’ll take heart from the fact that Ceske Budejovice didn’t win any away games last season in the league at all and I think they might just have enough to secure a home win so it’s worth a shot at 6/4.

Sigma Olomouc vs Banik Ostrava – home win at 6/5. After an emphatic 5-1 mid-week victory in Scotland over Aberdeen, Sigma Olomouc return with a massive morale-booster for a juicy tie with Banik Ostrava. Both of these sides are about as good as each other although I’d possibly tip Sigma Olomouc as being slightly better currently. The hosts aren’t going to worry too much about the return leg with Aberdeen as it’s pretty much redundant, barring a miracle, which leaves them free to set their sights on title rivals Banik Ostrava. What is interesting is that either one of these sides has the potential to mount a legitimate title challenge with Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague’s dominance seemingly beginning to wane. I think both sides are beginning to recognise this and it might just turn up the heat on this fixture. Lastly, Sigma Olomouc have won this exact fixture for the last two years running and Banik Ostrava haven’t beaten today’s opponents at all in the last four meetings between the two clubs, managing just one draw and three defeats. A home win at 6/5 certainly looks appetising, doesn’t it?

Nordsjaelland vs Randers – home win at 11/10. Randers are caught between a rock and a hard place currently. They’re experiencing that start-of-season slump that sides which are new to their European committments encounter sometimes. Unfortunately for them, they’re now getting battered on both fronts and don’t seem to know where to put their faces nor to have the quality to pull themselves out of it. It’s even harder for them, in their defence, because a side who has achieved a European place the season before immediately alerts the sides that play them the following season that they’re capable of playing good football so the sides tend to try harder against them. Nordsjaelland aren’t a great side but they experienced the exact same thing last season that Randers currently have so they will smell blood and are good enough to seize three points here. At 11/10 for a home win, I’m very tempted to name this as one of my tips of the day.

Haka Valkeakoski vs JJK Jyvaskyla – home win with -1.75 handicap at evens. I just can’t like Haka Valkeakoski! Whenever I back them, they fuck up. Whenever I lay them, they win. However, I’m going to take a stab at them winning despite a -1.75 goal handicap today. This is partially because they’re playing well and scoring lots of goals but mostly because JJK Jyvaskyla are really poor and should succumb to the subtle persuasions of today’s hosts with some ease. The hosts need to win to continue their assault on the Veikkausliiga as they try to wrestle the crown from Inter Turku.

VPS Vaasa vs FC Lahti – home win at 5/4. I used to consider FC Lahti a better side than VPS Vaasa but I think the hosts are just about level with FC Lahti nowadays. In addition to that, FC Lahti have their eyes firmly fixed upon Belgian giants Club Brugge who visit next week. FC Lahti have two away goals from the first leg so they know the game is perfectly within their grasp. There’s no way they’re going to field a full-strength squad with that knowledge thus I expect a home win here, which is a bargain at 5/4.

Shamrock Rovers vs Derry City – home win at evens. After a gritty but respectable performance in Sofia, Bulgaria, Derry City are more than aware that losing 1-0 is by no means the end of the tie so will be looking to oust CSKA Sofia in the return leg next week. For that reason, there’s no sense whatsoever (or possibility of them) fielding a full-strength squad. Shamrock Rovers have every incentive they need to win this game; four wins and a draw from their past five games and a title that’s almost within sight, albeit a sight from six points behind league leaders Bohemians. Effectively, two sides are playing here today with their eyes on different things. The main difference is that the hosts will want to win this a whole lot more than Derry City and have the form to do it. Taking a home win at evens certainly looks interesting!

Pumas UNAM vs Cruz Azul – home win at 11/10. Despite a poor start to this campaign by both sides, I’m still feeling the vibes for a home win here. Pumas UNAM had a very good season last year whereas Cruz Azul showed that they’re just getting worse as times go by. They used to be one of the better sides and are still one of the bigger sides so are capable of the odd surprise result. However, I can’t see them toppling one of the strongest sides that Pumas UNAM have had for some time today so a home win looks intriguing at 11/10.

America vs Morelia – home win at 5/6. America have long been the richest club in Mexico but it’s some time since they’ve had anything to show for it. However, they’re more than capable of utilising their strong squad to overcome lowly Morelia today because they’re simply better than them. As it is the start of this particular Mexican campaign, I emphasise some caution but still expect a home win so it’s worth a punt at 5/6.

Fredrikstad vs Viking Stavanger – away win at 15/8. I am astounded at the odds for an away win here, I can tell you. After their 6-1 annihlation by Poland’s Lech Poznan mid-week, Fredrikstad’s miserable season looks set to continue on all fronts, not just domestically. In the Tippeligaen they’ve lost two and drawn two from their last four games. They’re very much in a relegation dogfight and are showing such little fight that it’s untrue. They’re hosting one of the Tippeligaen’s bigger and better sides Viking Stavanger whose worst flaw is that they occasionally don’t turn up. However, if they do turn up, there’s no doubt in my mind they’ll win this game so 15/8 odds for this to occur really does surprise me because there’s definitely more chance of an away win than a home win. With three wins from five games and an away record which shows Viking Stavanger lose less games on the road than the majority of the Tippeligaen, you really have to favour an away win here.

Stromsgodset vs Valerenga Oslo – home win at 11/8. Valerenga Oslo are on a very slippery slope downwards. Much like Tippeligaen compatriots Fredrikstad, they too suffered an embarassing home defeat mid-week although still have a chance of qualification, unlike Fredrikstad. This is good news for people like me who think Stromsgodset are going to win this game because they’ll rest the few quality players they have for the trip to Greece next week, surely? Even if they don’t – four defeats in a row shows that Valerenga Oslo are as much a threat to Stromsgodset today as Papua New Guinea’s nuclear strength is to the world. The hosts are in poor form themselves but have at least drawn two from their last four games. The main reasoning behind my prediction of a home win here aside from the above is that Stromsgodset only get points at home. Their stadium in Drammen has been something of a fortress over the years and they’re certainly using it as one again. Whereas it’s not effective as it may have once been, they’ve still picked up most of their points here this season and they have the perfect opportunity to do so here. Odds of 11/8 are very welcome here!

Odd Grenland Skien vs Rosenborg BK – away win at 11/10, both sides to score, over 2.5 goals. This is my favourite bet of the day because it goes against what the majority of the tipsters have backed. People are saying that Rosenborg BK’s confidence will have taken a knock following their embarassing exit from the UEFA Europa League Qualifiers to Azeri outfit Karabakh Agdam. They’re also saying that Odd Grenland Skien’s home form is too good for the visitors. Whereas I agree that Odd Grenland Skien’s home form is good, I also hasten to point out that they are still a newly-promoted side to this division and they are hosting the absolute daddies of Norwegian Tippeligaen football, and have been for decades. Rosenborg are experienced, talented and efficient. Allow me to also point out that they are still unbeaten in this competition anywhere and boast the best away record in the division with seven wins from nine games. Call me silly if you like, but that is some bloody impressive away form and I really fancy them to increase that tally today. They’ve won God-knows-how-many games in a row in the Tippeligaen now and I just don’t think Odd Grenland Skien are capable of withstanding such an irresistable footballing force. Odds of 11/10 for an away win here look very tempting and it’s worth looking at over 2.5 goals as both sides like to score.
