Levante vs Real Madrid

Free

Today’s featured game is the Primera Liga game between Levante and Real Madrid. Levante are a side I have respect for following their consistent displays in the Segunda Liga last year but they’ve struggled to adapt to Primera Liga life following promotion. Giants Real Madrid, however, have started well without playing their atypical flambuoyant football so should be taken seriously today.

After four Primera Liga games, Levante find themselves uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. They’ve lost three out of four games and the only exception to that run was a 1-0 win at a very poor Almeria side last match so times are indeed hard. They’ve been beaten in their two home games during that run against both Villarreal and Sevilla CF respectively and although that’s far from a condemning list, the manner of their defeats have been demoralising at best. Admittedly, Levante did score in both games and that fact does concern me a little. However, despite Levante’s tenacity, they simply don’t have the class to cause problems in this type of game and that’s what spurs me on in this game today.

Visitors Real Madrid are a side that I have never enjoyed betting on because of their unpredictable nature, poor organisation, and basic lack of team spirit. However, this is no standard Madrid side – this is a Jose Mourinho Real Madrid side, and that for me makes all the difference. Since he took over, Real Madrid haven’t been as entertaining as before, it’s true. However, they’ve been a hell of a lot more effective than normal which is why they’ve only conceded once in their last five games in all competitions, controlling most of their games with ease. They were a little unsteady in the Basque country against Real Sociedad in their last away match but still emerged victorious despite conceding their first goal of the season in San Sebastian. Slowly but surely, Real Madrid are beginning to resemble every side that Mourinho has coached; unbeatable. The signing of Carvalho has really strengthened the Real Madrid defence and Mourinho’s tactics now see the Madrid team actually become a “team” for the first time since Fabio Capello was in charge and that is a very dangerous thought indeed with such talented players at his disposal. Mourinho has already complained that he doesn’t have enough attackers; what a fine way of making sure he gets the best out of his strikers! He’s a master at such mind games and Madrid’s attackers have been playing better as a result! His attention to detail and tactical line-ups are phenomenal and although I wasn’t sure pre-season whether he’d take to Madrid and vice versa, I’m now becoming more confident that Madrid can actually be a real force this year.

Madrid’s strongest point nowadays is keeping sides out, which is obviously what this bet hinges upon for the most part. Madrid have an attacking wealth that means they should score against a Levante side that averages conceding three goals per home game currently so I have no doubts on that front. Can they keep Levante out? I don’t see why not. They’ve not got the best defenders in the world but they’ve got one of the best managers in the world and his defences are never easy to breach. I can see a Real Madrid win here and the odds for them winning without conceding look particularly intriguing tonight as Mourinho has finally got his feet under the table at Madrid.

As far as team news goes – Madrid miss Pepe, who is suspended and should actually already be banned from football for life anyway and Albiol through injury. I’ve unfortunately not heard anything regarding the Levante team although without wanting to be disrespectful, it doesn’t massively concern me because Mourinho will accomodate for whoever plays for the opposing side.

Verdict: Real Madrid to win to nil at 21/20.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Wacker Innsbruck vs Wiener Neustadt – home win at 3/4.

Wacker Innsbruck continue to confound critics with a stream of sensational displays and currently deservedly top the Bundesliga as a result. A third of their goals have been scored by in-form striker Schreter, who has adapted to Bundesliga football very well indeed. Six wins in seven games says that Wacker are the side to beat currently, particularly as they average scoring over two goals per game and conceding just over a goal per every two games. It’s not like Wacker have just played some mediocre sides either – they’ve won at Austria Vienna (3-0) and at home to Rapid Vienna (4-0) with Sturm Graz the only side to puncture their impressive record with a 2-2 draw in Innsbruck. Kogler has got his side not only playing attractive football but also incredibly well-organised football so I really fancy Wacker to continue their excellent run today.

Visitors Wiener Neustadt are no strangers to upsets themselves, however. They arrived in the Bundesliga with a bang themselves last year, beating most sides at home and scoring an awful lot of goals. They’re still largely the same side as they were last year and have unfortunately embraced their problems of last year by being largely ineffectual away from home so I have my doubts over them today. One thing that Wiener never lack is goalscoring so expect plenty of goals here – they already average scoring over two goals per away game – but their defending is horrific and is basically the reason that they’ve lost three out of five away games in all competitions this season. They’ve played some good sides, admittedly, and they’ll always give their hosts a rough ride, but their hopeless defence gives their hosts far too many opportunities to win the game and in a game like this that then becomes suicidal. I like Wiener Neustadt but they’re going to to have to play better here than they have anywhere else this season and I find the chances of that somewhat unlikely.

So yeah – expect a lot of goals here. I was thinking over 4.5 goals as a fun bet but I’ll stick with the home win at 3/4 as Wacker look untouchable at the moment.

Team news – Wacker Innsbruck have doubts over the fitness of midfielder Obster and Wiener Neustadt are resting Kolousek for personal reasons.

Verdict: Wacker Innsbruck to win at 3/4.

BATE Borisov vs FC Minsk – lay BATE Borisov at 21/20.

Approach this one with caution because BATE Borisov really have to win this game if you consider that FC Minsk are their direct title threat at the moment and a win here puts an eight point gap between the two sides. BATE don’t necessarily need the gap in general terms but they do if you consider how much they prioritise their European committments. They do have a big squad available to them, yes, but this is the kind of game that can catch them out. They surprisingly lost to rivals Dinamo Minsk 3-1 at home last match, which will have hurt them considerably as Dinamo were a bit low mentally. BATE are still the best side in Belarus; no questions asked. However, they’ve drawn at a very poor and youthful Partizan Minsk, not to mention their loss at home to Dinamo Minsk, so things are far from good at the moment. They’re hosting AZ Alkmaar in a few days time in the UEFA Europa League and they may cast an eye towards that game and rest the likes of Rodionov so BATE have more than one problem ahead of this game. They also have the knowledge that FC Minsk were the first side to win at BATE this season when BATE were in full flow, which shows the advancing of FC Minsk this year as a unit so BATE could and should be afraid here. BATE love to control games and win them without conceding but FC Minsk bring a flambuoyant approach that BATE are alien to, which is why FC Minsk score so many goals. I’m a little concerned that FC Minsk played 120 minutes mid-week but eight wins in thirteen away games in the Vysshaya Liga this season says that FC Minsk are good enough to stop BATE winning this game today. They average scoring nearly two goals per away game and would love to prevent a home win here and with the hosts not playing well, I think the odds are decidedly generous on laying BATE today.

Verdict: Lay BATE Borisov at 21/20.

Rakovski vs Litex Lovech – under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Litex may have manged to retain prized possession Ivelin Popov from the clutches of Blackburn Rovers but he instead signed for Gaziantepspor at the end of last month and Litex are a lot weaker without him. Popov was the kind of player who made something happen from nothing, sort of like a poor man’s Ronaldo, and Litex really miss him. They’ve played their usual football of late but are looking a lot less threatening in front of goal because of his mazy runs, although the Litex strikers have to bear the burden here too because there’s plenty of ability there. Florin Bratu and Svetoslav Todorov have both been around for some time, as has Niflore, but despite the experience in the Litex attack, they’re not returning many goals. Don’t get me wrong – Litex are still one of the best sides in Bulgaria – but their start to the season has been far from ideal and new manager Penev is yet to make his mark on the side. As a former Bulgarian international striker himself, Penev will no doubt look to bring Litex goals but they’ve won just once in their last four A PFG games because they’re not scoring goals. Their last three games have gone under 2.5 goals with Litex’s defence looking strong but attack looking predictable so Penev has his work cut out here.

The riskier part of this bet is newly-promoted Rakovski. They had started their campaign quite well but it’s taken a drastic descent of late with a 6-1 humiliation at Sliven last match. Rakovski’s last home game ended 1-0 to Cherno More Varna and Rakovski are beginning to lose morale as a result of a poor run of form. They have troubled the powers that be in Bulgaria so far this season but those circumstances were relative with both CSKA and Levski struggling when they faced the then-tricky trip to Rakovski. I’m hoping that Rakovski still have enough zest and tenacity to make life difficult for goal-shy Litex today and they really should – this game is still like a cup final to them – so I expect Rakovski to really work hard and keep the scoreline respectable here – who knows, maybe they’ll even steal a draw.

Ultimately, the odds are good on this selection because if Litex turn it on then a 0-4 scoreline wouldn’t surprise me at all. However, they’re not well-placed to obtain that scoreline and although their hosts are bad enough to allow it to happen, I think taking under 2.5 goals looks a good choice here with the hosts well-motivated and the visitors not scoring goals currently.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Istra 1961 vs Split – away win at 27/20.

I’ll be blunt; I’ll rarely back away wins in the Prva Liga because they rarely happen, barring for the bigger sides. However, if any Prva Liga game in Croatia today is to end in an away win then it has to be this one – well, from the “dubious” list at least!

Istra 1961 have somehow avoided relegation for a while now but they look worse than ever and really should be demoted this season. They’ve lost six out of eight Prva Liga games this season, scoring just over a goal per every two games and conceding over two goals per game on average. They admittedly overcame Hrvatski Dragovoljac 3-1 mid-week in the Negometni Cup but their Prva Liga form tells the real story with two consecutive defeats at home in a row against Osijek and Inter Zapresic respectively, neither of which travels well. Istra tend to offer little to nothing in attack and little in defence so their stay in the Prva Liga should be short indeed.

Visitors Split are new to the Prva Liga but are embracing life in it with both hands. They’ve won five out of eight this season thanks to some astounding defensive displays and currently boast the best defensive record in the division by some distance. They’ve already won twice on the road this season against sides that are supposed to be better than they are (Cibalia Vinkovci and NK Zagreb respectively) without conceding a goal so they’re playing very well indeed. In fact, the only side to have even scored against Split in their last five games is their more illustrious city rivals Hajduk Split in respectable 1-1 draw. Although Split aren’t the most potent of sides, they’re ruthlessly efficient and are playing well enough for momentum to turn their chances into goals and if they get that lead then they hold it. I can’t see this run lasting the season because I don’t believe they’re good enough to do so but they’re playing so well at the moment that it’s hard not to take them seriously here.

Approach with caution as Croatia really isn’t a friend to the away win. However, Split look decent value at 27/20 today against an Istra 1961 side that cannot attack or defend with any kind of ability at the moment. In fact, if you want to try a really cheeky bet then back Split to win without conceding at 10/3 – great odds because if they do win, they should do it without conceding because their defence is rock-solid.

Verdict: Split to win at 27/20.

Bayern Munich vs Mainz 05 – lay Bayern Munich at 3/2.

I’ve gone through why I don’t rate Bayern Munich without Arjen Robben quite substantially in recent times and I’m following the same route again. Without the talented Dutch winger, Bayern look incredibly ordinary and even the magic Louis van Gaal can’t change that. Bayern do have some influential players on the park like Muller and Ribery but they’re not looking clinical enough in front of goal and are lacking top displays from their match-winners. Amusingly, I decided on this selection before finding out that Ribery misses this game too, which is just hilarious. Maybe it’ll come back to bite me in the ass but where are Bayern’s goals going to come from? There’s nobody there who can beat a man and make something happen! They’ve been struggling all season long against resilient defences but now without both Robben and Ribery, they should really struggle here, particularly as there isn’t a harder side to beat in Germany at the moment than Mainz. The only reason I’m a tad hesitant with this bet is because it could rapidly become a public bet following a good start to the season for Mainz and that tends to give bad luck to a selection, as superstitious as it may sound! Nonetheless, Mainz are driven, enthused, and incredibly effective at the moment so I have to give them their chances here. They’ve won five out of five in the Bundesliga this season, including a game where they trailed 3-0 at VfL Wolfsburg and including a trip to Werder Bremen last match so this fixture won’t faze them. They’ve been strong defensively for a couple of years now but now that they’ve added potency to their attack with emerging striker Andre Schurrle (who has supposedly aroused the interest of English giants Manchester United already) they look a very dangerous outfit indeed.

Tuchel’s Mainz are always hard to beat and Bayern have seldom looked less likely to do so than they do now. This selection is not a “dead cert” but I’m sure that you’ll agree that Bayern without their star wingers are nowhere near as effective so laying the hosts could be a good bet today.

Verdict: Lay Bayern Munich at 3/2.

Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Barcelona – lay Barcelona at 13/10.

This is easily the boldest call that I’ve made today but I do think there’s a good chance of it working.

No trip to San Mames is ever easy, even for Barcelona. The hatred between these two clubs runs a lot deeper than mere football with the respective counties of Catalonia and the Basque country both of the opinion that they should be seperate from Spain itself and thus both counties have very proud people and as a result, both clubs field players incredibly proud to wear the shirt. You’ll always see passionate encounters between these two sides and the intimdiating crowd in Bilbao has never yielded for a Barcelona visit which is why the visitors struggle here more often than not, despite results generally showing otherwise.

Barcelona haven’t impressed so far though, have they? There’s a bit too much of “let’s hope Messi bails us out” to their football than I’d like to see from supposedly the best side in the world but I’m sure Guardiola will sort that out in due course. Barcelona missing Messi at a time like this really doesn’t help as they showed by labouring past a vastly under-strength Sporting Gijon at home mid-week in a 1-0 victory. David Villa appears to have settled well and to underestimate the quality of Barcelona’s midfield is suicidal but they’re simply not playing well at the moment and you’re a braver man than me if you back them in northern Spain tonight.

Bilbao always play well at home with their well-organised side and Caparros’ excellent tactical skills. Happily, Bilbao boast a largely full-strength side and arising left-back Aurtenetxe will no doubt be over the moon with the news that Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi will not be lining up against him tonight. He’s looked good since Caparros put him in the first-team this year, as has new signing in midfield Igor Martinez in glimpses. To be in charge of Bilbao, you have to be shrewd in the transfer market for obvious reasons and Caparros knows that and has done so this year. It’s interesting that he’s not fielded his new signing Ibai Gomez on the wing yet, however, who is supposedly a very talented player indeed, although that of course remains to be seen. Nonetheless, Llorente looks his usually imposing self in attack and Barcelona’s unconvincing defence at the moment will look vulnerable against the Basque outfit in this game if they don’t manage him by being astute from set pieces. I’ll be surprised if Caparros doesn’t play both Orbaiz and Gurpegi in this game to add steel to the midfield against the likes of Xavi because it’s generally stupid to do otherwise. However, Barcelona’s weakness this season has been down the flanks so Caparros has to play Susaeta here and push Iraola on (push? he’s never in defence!) to get those dangerous crosses in and feed the towering Llorente. If Javi Martinez is allowed to pull the strings tonight then Barcelona are in for a very uncomfortable night but what I’ve seen from Bilbao so far has impressed me enough for me to lay their more illustrious opponents tonight, risky though it is – the Catalans simply aren’t convincing whereas the hosts are looking very hard to beat in general.

Oh, and just as a side note – the real Messi may not be on show but don’t be surprised if Bilbao’s “Messi” (Iker Muniain) shows his worth tonight instead in what could be a really fascinating encounter.

Team news – Messi is absent for Barcelona and Toqeruo is absent for the hosts.

Verdict: Lay Barcelona at 13/10.
