With Thun deservedly winning at Grasshopper Zurich recently, that relegation battle suddenly looks really interesting in Switzerland’s Super League, doesn’t it? I didn’t expect Thun to collapse and die but they were floundering at the foot of the table and it was hard to see where their points were coming from. Fortunately, they chanced upon a stagnant and wholly unimpressive Grasshopper Zurich and have managed to scare the hell out of a lot of teams, Grasshopper Zurich included. To me, the one that should be the most worried is Lausanne Sport though.

It’s not as if Lausanne Sport lack quality, because they don’t. However, they do lack familiarity  and it really, really shows. The only team that hasn’t consistently torn them apart at the back in 2018 was a very lazy FC Basel – and even they had periods in the game where they were simply toying with the Lausanne Sport back four. This team cannot keep sides out. Forget their recent clean sheet at Thun; Thun had more than enough chances to score goals in that game, and I do mean seriously good chances. I lost count of how many one-on-ones that Costanzo spurned!

I wouldn’t say that Lausanne Sport are playing badly though, because that’s simply not true. They do have some backbone in their squad. Their players play as if they give a shit, which helps. Hell, they’ve got a fine attack if they want to actually use it with classy Margiotta up front supported by Zidane, Kololli, Geissmann, and new signing Fransson. Let’s not forget about big Rapp up front either. In theory, this is actually a very good Lausanne Sport side, at least from an attacking perspective. The reality is quite different, however.

You see, Lausanne Sport’s defence are conceding a lot of goals and their attack is not familiar enough right now to be continually effective. They’re still working hard, as I said, but it takes more than that to win games. That’s why I think that they’re at a disadvantage in this relegation battle despite having some real quality in their squad; they’ve just not had long enough playing together. I don’t know if they’ll have enough time to perfect it before the end of the season either. I can’t see all of the teams around them with enough experience and familiarity to pick up wins but can I say the same for Lausanne Sport? No. They need luck and they’ve not had any lately.

Having said that, visitors Lugano haven’t had any luck themselves either. For one of the most mentally strong and consistent teams in Switzerland, Lugano had done a mighty fine job of completely disintegrating in the blink of an eye in recent weeks.  I thought they played well against Young Boys Bern and then suddenly they were conceding four goals. I didn’t think that they got battered by FC Zurich but they conceded three goals right at the start of the game, most of which were goals that FC Zurich couldn’t score again if they tried to, which speaks volumes about the lack of luck Lugano have at the moment. Then they lost at home against Luzern and again, they didn’t deserve that. Their luck has to change soon and because their displays are convincing, I’ve decided that today is that day.

Lugano have some good players in this squad but their main strength is usually their togetherness. They’re natural fighters, the southerners, and when fused with quality like what Gerndt and Mariani bring to the table, Lugano tend to be quite effective. They’ve added experienced Austrian striker Janko to their ranks, which is a fine coup for the minnows, and with players like Bottani and Carlinhos supporting them, it’s fair to say that Lugano’s attack is hard to handle. They’ve got some decent defenders too but again, this team is all about organisation and togetherness, which is why their recent run is so mystifying. I trust them to deliver against hapless Lausanne Sport though.

The home team have better names than Lugano but the visitors have a lot more cohesion. Their results of late may be similarly depressing but I view Lugano’s as bad luck and Lausanne Sport’s as bad timing. Therefore, I trust Lugano more, and this is the type of game where they prove why they’re the kind of team that won’t get relegated from the Super League any time soon. I’ll take my chances on the away win here.

Verdict: Lugano to win at 7/5.
