It seems like all the good games missing earlier this week have been moved to today, hence there being 12 tips in the Members Section today! Sorry for the overload, guys, but I only tip when I see potential and it seems like there’s a lot of it today!
Today’s secondary featured game is the Primera Liga game in San Sebastian between Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. The common theme for these two sides is to be underestimated so it’ll be interesting to see what occurs today.
As far as home games go, I would usually be all over Real Sociedad winning at 11/10. They’re strong at the back, they’ve got some dynamic attacking players, some very experienced players, and a strong level of support at Anoeta. Unlike most sides in the top flight of Spanish football, Sociedad can actually hold a lead, which tends to make them very hard to break through on their own turf. We all know the Basque mentality and the advantage that it gives the home sides so the hosts are rightfully favourites today. However, they have one big problem – the absence of Mikel Gonzalez through injury. The reliable centre-back is injured and there isn’t a replacement of the same quality and thus I think Sociedad’s usual “unders” approach may rapidly become forced into an “overs” approach.
Of course, that does depend on Rayo Vallecano showing up, which they can do when they feel like it. I suppose you could point to Michu as being the catalyst but Rayo have produced a few shocks this season already and he’s not the sole reason behind that. I must admit that I don’t rate Rayo very highly but this side is consistent when it comes to causing surprise results! Rayo’s away results tend to be rather conclusive, however – they’ve gone over 2.5 goals for seven consecutive away games due to conceding an average of three goals per game. In fact, they’ve conceded in all seven of those games and despite scoring thirteen goals along the way themselves, bad defending tends to leave them with minimal points so we know what should happen here.
Realistically, Sociedad should make it count at home. However, not much has been very straightforward either this weekend or in the last round of Spanish fixtures so I won’t throw my hand in on a Sociedad win today. However, over 2.5 goals looks a steal as the hosts will find it hard to keep their plucky opponents out without Gonzalez but they need the points and have the firepower to get them so my call is over 2.5 goals at 10/11.
Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 10/11.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool – home win with draw no bet at 6/5.
As far as I am concerned, the rule of thumb with Liverpool is to back them when they’re the underdogs and oppose them when they’re favourites. Their motivation doesn’t seem to be as high in games like these as it is when they face Chelsea, for example. Given that Liverpool aren’t really an especially good side nowadays, that tends to have catastrophic effects as even the weakest sides in the Premier League have to work hard to get that break. Add to that the fact that morale is low following a really bad run and I think they’re in for a really tough game today. Everyone that has played at Newcastle this season has struggled and is it any wonder? There’s two big, quick, strong strikers in Cisse and Ba whilst the pace and skill of Gutierrez and Ben Arfa provides lethal support, not to mention the playmaking of Cabaye. However, Newcastle’s problem lies in their defence with Taylor a long-term casualty and Coloccini reportedly joining him on the sidelines. That almost guarantees a Liverpool goal at some point and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Carroll against his old club, either. However, the home win with draw no bet cover interests me at 6/5 as the hosts are better goalscorers and are better organised than their opponents right now and let’s face it – European football is a very realistic possibility at this moment in time so this game does mean something to Newcastle.
Verdict: Newcastle United to win with draw no bet at 6/5.
CD Nacional de Madeira vs Rio Ave – home win at 11/10.
With Rio Ave coach Brito even stating that the trips to Madeira are amongst the hardest in Portugal, you have to favour the home side here. The fact is that every side struggles here, even the likes of Porto. Porto won here recently and God only knows how with some amazing luck on their side that day. Nacional are a good side – all they need to do is to improve their finishing and that makes them a very dangerous side. Since September, only the bigger sides have managed to win here and those were in tight games! Rio Ave are good at home but horribly predictable and ineffectual on the road, already having lost ten in twelve this season. So long as Nacional are as clinical in this game as they were at defensive moguls Beira-Mar last match, the home win looks beautifully priced here.
Verdict: CD Nacional de Madeira to win at 11/10.
