Today’s secondary featured game is the Soproni Liga game between sleeping giants Ferencvaros and hopeless Lombard Papa.
Although still struggling to earn their spurs in the Soproni Liga, Ferencvaros remain the giant of Hungarian football. You can and will forget that in their away games because they are unrecognisable on the road. However, at home, in front of their passionate fans, Ferencvaros almost always deliver. Consider that the only two sides to have won at Ferencvaros since September are respective giants Debreceni VSC and Fehervar, who are both better sides than Ferencvaros right now. Everyone else has struggled here, including high-flying Gyori ETO FC, who drew here 2-2 recently. Ferencvaros will always have their problems; that’s why they’re the circus of Hungary. The latest one is Junior being sent to the reserves for a bad display aganist Fehervar. However, when it comes to playing at home, they’re at least a solid and determined side. They need to build up momentum prior to their fierce derby with Ujpest next week and I think that they have the perfect game to achieve it, too.
Happily, Lombard Papa have sunk to a whole new level of atrocity by inexplicably losing against already doomed Zalaegerszegi TE. Goalscoring has been their biggest problem all season long and a tricky Ferencvaros side are not a welcome opponent today as a result. Lombard Papa have failed to score in three out of their last five away games in all competitions and I’m not sure how that will change today following their horrendous result last time out. They do need the points more than Ferencvaros, admittedly, but Lombard Papa already look like they’ve given up to me. They’re in real danger of being relegated this season, especially with Vasas Budapest standing a decent chance of beating Siofok today. To me, that means Lombard Papa can’t sit back for the whole game and if they commit me forward against Ferencvaros then counter-attacks of the hosts will hurt them.
I think this game may take some time to get going but as the superior side with the better form, taking the hosts to win this one against their demoralised and goal-shy opponents appeals to me at 9/10.
Verdict: Ferencvaros to win at 9/10.
