Slovacko vs Sparta Prague

Free

Before I begin today’s post, I’d like to give a quick shout-out to www.little-sports-stars.co.uk, who “specialise in children’s Multi Sports Coaching, Nurseries, School PE Sessions/Supply/PPA Cover, Lunch/After-School/Holiday Clubs, Parties, and more” as we feel it’s worthy of being mentioned for any of you that might be interested.

Today’s featured game is the Gambrinus Liga game between Slovacko and Sparta Prague. Slovacko have done ok this season when you consider that they’re a terrible side and Sparta Prague have under-achieved by their own lofty standards although they’re gradually rectifying that as the season wears on so I expect a good display from them today.

Slovacko, Slovacko, Slovacko – where to begin with this scourge of bets?! I can’t count the number of times that this side has done the unpredictable and ruined a bet (i.e. last week by somehow winning at a very good Mlada Boleslav and doubling their tally of goals on the road for the entire season in doing so!) but the fact is that they’re a poor side. They tend to take their points at home, as you’d expect, and they’ll give any Gambrinus Liga opponent a rough ride if they’re not motivated when they face the minnows. However, Slovacko lack a lot in the quality department and although their tenacity will bail them out against lesser opponents, it tends to let them down against one of the few actual quality sides in the division – Sparta Prague. They’ve faced this particular giant three times since promotion the year before last and they’ve lost every time. Slovacko will make Sparta Prague work hard but they ultimately don’t have enough experience and rely far too heavily upon ageing striker Petr Svancara, who has done well this season but will not continue that run forever. Slovacko managed a miraculous win at Mlada Boleslav last match thanks to him (amongst others) but look at their run prior to that – four consecutive defeats (including a 7-0 drubbing at Brno!) in which they scored once and conceded twelve times. I choose to pay more attention to that record than their one-off displays and although I expect them to treat this game as if it were a cup final, I just don’t think they’re good enough to take anything off Sparta Prague today.

Visitors Sparta Prague were disappointing at the start of the campaign but are easing back into their stride with no defeats in five consecutive games in all competitions, winning their last four, three of which were away from home. Sparta are back to their free-scoring ways as thirteen goals being scored in five games indicates all too well so I’m feeling happier about backing them again after their slow start. Star striker Wilfried has been on-fire lately with six goals scored in his last five appearances and if Sparta win today then the Ivorian will no doubt play a big part in that. Sparta’s defending is still occasionally suicidal but their attack is finally compensating for that as they outscore each opponent that they face. They’ve required different assets to overcome their last three opponents away from home – Lausanne Sports, Bohemians 1905, and Slovan Liberec respectively – but have triumphed each time with a convincing display. Sparta Prague are gradually returning to their successful ways and hosts Slovacko shouldn’t be a side that they struggle with today as a result.

The important thing for this game is that Sparta arrive in the game with their minds focused and motivated because Slovacko will make them work hard. However, if Sparta do that, then I’ve no doubts whatsoever that they’ll win the game. Their momentum is strong, the possess a vastly superior squad, and they’re scoring goals for fun. Odds of 3/4 on the away win are surprisingly generous, really – I was expecting shorter odds for this game – so my call is the away win for this encounter.

Verdict: Sparta Prague to win at 3/4.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Belshina vs BATE Borisov – under 2.5 goals at evens.

Gotta love this one! Belshina attempt to be BATE Borisov but without being as good as they are. Belshina are simply very well-organised but low-scoring and are somewhat bereft of quality. Few sides win at Belshina with ease and although Belshina are tiring from a long season after having only just been promoted, they’ll still no doubt be up for what is effectively their cup final against giants BATE Borisov. Belshina always play to stop their opponents scoring and to their credit, they’re pretty damn good at it so BATE are in for a tough game here. Belshina have played sixteen home games in the Vysshaya Liga this season and only two of them have gone over 2.5 goals, both of which were a rarity as they involved either Belshina scoring more than once or conceding more than once. Belshina have only lost four home games this season and although they do struggle against the better sides, I feel they’re good enough to keep the scoreline respectable here. BATE only need a point from this game to claim yet another Vysshaya Liga title so they don’t need to go in here all guns blazing. They average scoring less than two goals per away game and concede a goal every two away games on average so they’re well-placed to keep the scoreline fairly low here themselves. If they get the result here then they can rest players in their final Vysshaya Liga game against Shakhtyor Soligorsk in order to prepare for their Belarusian Cup Quarter-Final game with Dinamo Brest so I don’t think BATE will lose this one. The 1×2 market doesn’t appeal to me here, although BATE should win, but under 2.5 goals looks too generously priced at evens to overlook for this game.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at evens.

Litex Lovech vs Lokomotiv Sofia – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Litex have been excellent in recent times with six consecutive A PFG wins but something doesn’t sit well with me when I consider that they’re 2/5 to beat a top five side in this division. I’d say Litex are the better side here, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think that there’s a club in Bulgaria that is worthy of being 2/5 to beat Lokomotiv Sofia. However, I can vaguely accept the odds on the basis of how well Litex have been playing and that they’ve beaten title rivals Levski Sofia along the way so momentum and confidence is strong. Litex are missing important defender Berberovic through suspension for this game, however, so their defence may not be as effective as normal, which can be dangerous against a potent Lokomotiv Sofia side. Lokomotiv aren’t great travellers because unlike fellow title challengers Levski, CSKA, and Litex, they’re not sound enough defensively away from home – they often concede. Lokomotiv rarely have problems in scoring goals on the road and they’ve demonstrated that at this ground before by scoring on four out of their last five visits so I think they’ll score today, especially as the hosts are missing a key defender. However, Litex are playing really well and you have to expect them to win the game and therefore I think over 2.5 goals is a bigger possibility than the bookies do here. Three out of the last five meetings between these two sides have gone over 2.5 goals and with the above in mind, I think we’ll see over 2.5 goals in this game today.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Lokomotiva Zagreb vs Hajduk Split – under 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Although Lokomotiva Zagreb aren’t as strong as they were last year, they’re still hard to beat at home and I’m sure they’ll be a force against their senior team’s bitter rivals Hajduk Split. Lokomotiva offer little in the way of attack but their defence is at least reliable in keeping opponents out when playing at home. Hajduk are without question the better of these two sides but they average scoring less than two goals per away game and as I don’t expect the impotent hosts to score, I think we’re looking at under 2.5 goals here. Hajduk really should win this game but odds of 4/5 on this game going under 2.5 goals looks intriguing here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Debreceni VSC vs Zalaegerszegi TE – home win at 4/5.

Both of these two sides are good sides but Debreceni VSC are still the daddies in the Soproni Liga and it therefore stands to reason that they possess the most dominant home record in the division with seven wins and one draw from eight home games, scoring an average of three goals per game. Debreceni will be pleased to see ZTE as their opponents today too as they’ve beaten them for nine consecutive meetings at home. These two sides always play out a good game with plenty of goals so I’d call this one of the games of the day to watch but Debreceni are priced a bit too generously here to be ignored, in my opinion. They’ve already beaten league leaders Fehervar and giants Ferencvaros at home this season so why not yet another all-too-familiar scalp on the Debreceni VSC pole? ZTE will give them a good game as they always do and they’ve played very well of late, it has to be said, but both sides lost good players in the summer and I personally feel ZTE have been hit the hardest out of the two, especially with Latvian starlet Rudnevs having left. ZTE’s free-flowing attacking football has remained entact, admirably, so they still score goals for fun. However, their attack isn’t as potent as it was with pacey Rudnevs and it should show in games like this. Although I admire ZTE’s unyielding attacking spirit, they still can’t defend particularly well and Debreceni are the type of side to take advantage of that. For me, Debreceni are well worth 4/5 to beat a side that they’re better than and to beat a side that they’ve got a proven track record of beating.

Verdict: Debreceni VSC to win at 4/5.

Reggina vs Torino – home win at 5/4.

Reggina aren’t as good as the side that they used to be but to give the long odds of 5/4 here is still far too generous. This is one of the weakest Torino sides in years after a pretty heavy number of losses over the summer. Although Torino fortunately kept hold of prolific target man Rolando Bianchi, they still parted with experienced attacker David Di Michele, experienced goalkeeper Matteo Sereni,  and important defenders Matteo Rubin and Simone Loria, not to mention Davide Zoboli. Torino have not only lost a great deal of experience there but also a lot of their tactical prowess and that hurts a side like Torino because they’re not a flambuoyant side nowadays. That’s why Torino have already lost four out of six on the road this season and that’s why I expect them to lose this one today too. Reggina are playing well at the moment with two wins from their last two games, not to mention five wins and two draws from seven Serie B home games. Reggina aren’t a prolific goalscoring side either but their defence at home is stout as two goals scored against them in seven games indicates all too well. Why are Reggina doing so much better this year than last year? One word; Bonazzoli. He’s bagged nine goals in twelve games for Reggina, which is already over double of what he scored last season and the experienced target man is having the time of his life, scoring at will with far better service. Therefore, Reggina have gained confidence and are playing better as a result so they have to be taken seriously here.

Torino have the better of the head-to-head meetings between these two sides but I don’t see them having their own way today. Torino aren’t scoring enough goals and it’s going to be hard to shatter a stiff Reggina resolve. Reggina are taking their chances and if they go in front here then I really fancy them to win the game. Either way, odds of 5/4 on Reggina winning this game appear too generous, in my opinion.

Verdict: Reggina to win at 5/4.

Polonia Warsaw vs Ruch Chorzow – home win at 4/5.

Polonia Warsaw finally had the wake-up call that they needed before the match with Lech Poznan at weekend. The players were told that they weren’t being paid unless they started playing better and that certainly seemed to work with Polonia totally outclassing Lech Poznan for the first-half of their game against them lately, leading 0-2 at the break. However, an inspired Lech display in the second-half saw the game end 2-2, which was fair. Polonia can take some confidence into this game though and let’s face it – the players want to be paid so they’re going to have to work hard today. The quality of Polonia’s side isn’t in question – they’re one of the top sides in Poland with the likes of Sobiech, Coutinho, Smolarek, and Mierzejewski in their squad. However, the impatient board aren’t aiding the side with their natural progression and that will ultimately damage them. Nonetheless, with the necessary application, Polonia should have more than enough to win this game. Ruch Chorzow are a spent force with only Sedlok remaining from a once good side. Ruch are now little more than a well-organised side after their financial hardship in summer and although they’re defending resolutely, they’re still not offering much in the way of attack. It certainly doesn’t help Ruch’s cause that two of their remaining strikers of any level of ability (Sebastian Olszar and hero of their last game Lukasz Janoszka) both miss the game through injury so it’s hard to see Ruch doing anything here. Admittedly, Polonia are missing Mierzejewski and Smolarek for this game but they should still have more than enough to score at least once here and if they do then I don’t see a way back for Ruch. Ruch haven’t won here in two years and I doubt that’s going to start today. For me, the value is with the home win at 4/5.

Verdict: Polonia Warsaw to win at 4/5.

Gorzow Wielkopoloski vs Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala – away win at 23/20.

For me, Podbeskidzie are a better away side than they are at home because they’re not the kind of side that responds well to pressure or playing against a side that defends with eleven men behind the ball. Away from home, Podbeskidzie’s lethal counter-attacks are let loose which is why they’ve notched up over two goals per away game and that’s why they’ve already won five of those eight away games, losing just once on the road this season. It aids their cause massively that they currently boast the best defensive record in Liga 1 and let’s face it – they look very likely to be playing Ekstraklasa football next season if trends continue. They’ve kept four clean sheets from their last five games and with a lethal attacking trio of Cielinski, Demjan, and Patejuk in their arsenal, it’s hard to see Podbeskidzie not scoring in many games this season. Their hosts, Gorzow Wielkopolski, are usually a good home side. However, they have a somewhat cursed record against Podbeskidzie with no wins in four attempts at either ground, losing their two home games against Podbeskidzie along the way. To make matters worse for Gorzow, they’ve lost four out of their last six games and are yet to win during that period so morale is low and Gorzow aren’t scoring as a result – they’ve only scored once in their last five games! As if things couldn’t get any worse for Gorzow though – they’re also missing key defenders Petrik and Jasinski, not to mention goalkeeper Janicki or back-up defenders Grocholski and Ziemniak. I don’t think things could look much worse for the hosts and with the visitors in such good form, 23/20 on the away win looks decidedly generous today.

Verdict: Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala to win at 23/20.

Tom Tomsk vs Alaniya Vladikavkaz – no bet.

This game is supposedly a fixed away win so I’d avoid betting on this game at all costs.

Verdict: No bet.
