Sporting Gijon vs Real Zaragoza

Free

Apologies guys – only just realised the Liga de Quito game vs Lanus is tonight and not yesterday!

Anyway, today’s featured game is in the Primera Liga and is between Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza. These two sides are widely expected to be amongst the relegation strugglers this season and I can’t say I disagree with that statement. That said, I’ve been very impressed with Sporting Gijon so far in terms of performances as they look highly motivated in what will be a difficult year for them. An impressive 2-2 draw at the Mestalla against Valencia last match despite only having ten men epitomises my point perfectly. The hosts are resilient but also quite efficient and are generally a handful for any side lacking in motivation. Real Zaragoza will most likely not be lacking in motivation but what they are short of is players. With a reported nine first team players missing, this Real Zaragoza squad is rapidly becoming “the best of what’s left”. This fact was illustrated by their home defeat against Real Valladolid last match. It’s going to be a long and hard season for Real Zaragoza but even moreso if they’re missing such a large quantity of players. On their day, I’d expect them to match Sporting Gijon but I can’t see how that could possibly be attained with such a woeful number of players to select. For me, taking the home win at 13/10 looks a real steal today.

Thursday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sporting Gijon vs Real Zaragoza – home win at 13/10 – see introduction for full details.

Liga de Quito vs Lanus – home win at 10/11. A poor start to their domestic campaign has seen Lanus claim just one win from their opening five games, a fact that will disappoint Lanus after an impressive campaign last time out. They’ve lost three of their five games so far domestically and appear to be struggling a considerable amount. Despite a slender victory over River Plate last week in the Nissan Sudamericana, Lanus just aren’t convincing at the moment and I can’t help but feel they’re going to get “found out” in the dizzying heights of Quito tonight. They’re travelling to an experienced Ecuadorian outfit in Liga de Quito, who boast a good squad and a very impressive home record. A crushing defeat away to bitter rivals Deportivo Quito last match (domestically) will have hurt Liga de Quito, something I expect to inspire them to victory tonight to at least compensate their fans. In my opinion, this venue is one of the hardest away trips in South America due to the massive distance above sea level Quito is and the quality of the home side. I can’t quite believe that the bookies are giving 10/11 on a home win and I thoroughly expect that to drop before too long so take it whilst you can!

Helsingborgs vs AIK Solna – away win at 8/5. I have my reservations about this bet as AIK Solna have only won here once out of their last three trips (losing the other two games) but as ever, I have my reasons! Hosts Helsingborgs have suffered some terrible indignities of late by not only failing to win for their past five games but having lost three of them to the likes of Brommapojkarna (at home!), GAIS Goteborg (also at home!) and Halmstads (away). For a side that should be competing for the Allsvenskan title, this is beyond shambolic. There’s currently no cohesion, no momentum and thus little prospect of them taking points off a much better side than those whom they’ve lost to – AIK Solna. The visitors are currently top of the table, they’re unbeaten in five games and have won three consecutive games. AIK Solna might be amongst the more boring sides in the Allsvenskan but you cannot question their efficiency in grinding out results. I fully expect both sides to be up for this game as both need three points but today I’m going to side with in-form AIK Solna at 8/5.

Orgryte vs Trelleborgs – home win at 11/8. Three wins in their last four games says that Orgryte are trying their utmost to get away from the relegation zone and doing bloody well with it! I’m not sure if they’re going to have enough to do it but they’re certainly giving it a powerful shot! If only they’d tried this earlier in the season then they might not have found themselves in the predicament they’re currently in. The fact remains, however, that they do need the points and today’s game is certainly one which can be won. They’re hosting a Trelleborgs side that haven’t won in three games, losing twice along the way. Trelleborgs are also one of the worst away sides in the Allsvenskan with just one win away from home all season. Given the above information, a home win at 11/8 could prove to be a carrier of significant value, in my opinion!
