Vitoria vs Santos

Free

My previewed game today is in Brazil’s Serie A and is between Vitoria and Santos. Hosts Vitoria have made a promising start to the season, better than I’d think even they expected to make. They currently occupy third place and have won two from their last three games. Visitors Santos are beginning to awaken and utilise the vast array of talent available to them. However, their away form this season has been poor and they travel to a Vitoria side today that currently has a 100% record at home – four wins from four. Not only that but they’re averaging 2.5 goals per home game too. Santos may have only lost once on the road this season but they’re not going to be overly confident entering this game with that statistic looming over their heads. For me, it should be business as usual for Vitoria and a comfortable home win to bounce back from last game’s defeat at Flamengo.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Vitoria vs Santos – home win – see introduction for full details.

Fluminense vs Santo Andre – home win. Fundamentally, Fluminense are too good for Santo Andre. I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t my main inspiration behind selecting a home win here. Aside from that, the hosts are decent at home (two wins, two draws and just one defeat) and the visitors aren’t great on the road. There’s a possibility of a draw here given both sides have a tendency to not score but I really fancy a home win here. If that doesn’t float your boat, try your hand at under 2.5 goals – this game has it written all over it.

VPS Vaasa vs Tampere United – home win. Again, Tampere United look to be a victim of their inability to win on the road. They’ve lost five games from five on the road this season and this trait doesn’t look like stopping as they travel to a VPS Vaasa side that has notched up three wins in their past five games. Their home record isn’t particularly dominant, but they’ve shown they mean business in their recent displays, including a goal bonanza at home to HJK Helsinki where the hosts threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 3-4. Pluck and goalscoring ability they have – now they have an opponent that is willing to be that lamb to slaughter. I’d take whatever odds you can get on a home win here.

Haka Valkeakoski vs TPS Turku – away win, draw no bet. This is probably my riskiest bet of the day. In-form TPS Turku travel to league leaders Haka Valkeakoski in a rather strange predicament; they’re better than the side they’re visiting but find themselves a few places behind. Admittedly, it’s still early season but it’s somewhat beyond me that Haka Valkeakoski are still winning this league. They’ve got a good squad, a hard-working squad, but they’re not great – they’re not at HJK Helsinki level. Indeed, if I’m honest with you, I don’t think they’re at TPS Turku’s level yet either! Regarding today’s game, however – the visitors sure know how to find the net on the road and they don’t often lose when travelling, or indeed at all. I think Haka Valkeakoski might just get found out today in a surprise away win. However, Haka Valkeakoski might be a surprise to me at sitting atop the league but one thing I can’t deny is their results, so take care with the bet, possibly via draw no bet.

TP 47 Tornio vs KooTeePee Kotka  – away win. The visitors are beginning to show the kind of form that got them promoted to the Veikkausliiga a cuople of seasons ago as opposed to the form that saw them leave the Veikkausliiga last season. KooTeePee Kotka are still one of the lowest scoring sides in the history of man but they’re beginning to win games 1-0 etc. Their inability to score more than one goal will be sorely tested as they visit rubbing rags TP 47 Tornio. The hosts were a little unfortunate to lose to Hameenlinna last week but the fact remains that they still haven’t won a home game this season, having drawn once and lost three times. I can’t see that ending today against a side that is still capable of playing Veikkausliiga football; I’d take whatever odds you can get the away win at and possibly consider under 2.5 goals.

Kyoto Purple Sanga vs Kashiwa Reysol – home win. Kyoto Purple Sanga are one of three sides in the J-League to have won six home games this season, the most that any side has won. Their form may not be great at the moment (two wins, two draws and one defeat in their past five games) but they entertain a Kashiwa Reysol side that has only won once away from home in eight attempts. With statistics like that, it’s easy to see why the visitors are finding life tough in the J-League and are battling against relegation. As the visitors enter the game with four defeats from five games, you can only see it getting worse for them today as they take on a relentless home machine in the shape of Kyoto Purple Sanga.

Lyn Oslo vs Bodo Glimt – home win. This is an interesting fixture! Both of these sides appear hell-bent on fighting each other to finish bottom of the league with neither side having won a league game since…what, 1914 or something?! But seriously, both sides are massively out of form. You’d perhaps expect this statistc for lowly Bodo Glimt who were one of the pre-season favourites to drop down to the Adeccoligaen this year but not Lyn Oslo, a side that has some talent. Unfortunately for them, financial issues appear to have corrupted both the club and the players’ mentalities and they’re struggling because of it. That said, their performances lately have been very dogged and encouraging. Indeed, you could even describe them as unfortunate in some of their games. Bodo Glimt just don’t have the ability to compete like Lyn Oslo so a home win here looks a real bargain here. On a final note, you have to laugh at this fixture because Lyn Oslo haven’t won a home game this season and Bodo Glimt haven’t won an away game this season – something has to give, surely?!

Stromsgodset vs Rosenborg BK – away win, both sides to score. Stromsgodset’s fortress in Drammen is today being tested by league leaders and overall Tippeligaen giants Rosenborg BK. I shouldn’t have to justify why I think Rosenborg BK will win this game because they’re effectively the dog’s bollocks in this league and if they don’t win it then the universe should implode. However, today’s trip won’t be as easy as normal for the undefeated league leaders as have struggled here before, like most sides really. However, since those times, Rosenborg BK have got better and Stromsgodset have declined a little. League form shows Rosenborg BK in typically irresistable form and Stromsgodset with just one win in five games. An away win is certainly on the cards but my focal point here is for both sides to score. Why? Stromsgodset haven’t played a home game without scoring a goal in their last seven attempts and haven’t failed to score against Rosenborg BK since 2001. It may also be worth your time to take an over 2.5 goals approach to this game as the average game between these two sides tends to go over that mark.

Skeid Oslo vs Tromsdalen – away win. Yep, it’s the same old with Skeid Oslo – they’re shit and going to be relegated. Should I even try to justify why this will be an away win or do you all already know? Tromsdalen aren’t great on the road but they don’t need to be for this fixture. They enter the game unbeaten in four matches, having won two and drawn two. Skeid Oslo have lost four in a row now and I expect Tromsdalen to make it a fifth straight defeat.

Kuban Krasnodor vs Spartak Nalchik – home win, under 2.5 goals. This relegation battle has the hallmark of one of the most boring games that the Russian Premier League has ever brought us. Low-scoring Kuban Krasnodor entertain shitty Spartak Nalchik in a game that has under 2.5 goals written all over it. Why? Kuban Krasnodor have managed a meager three goals from five home games this season, but to their credit, they’ve still not conceded a goal at home all season, the only side in the division that can boast this. Visitors Spartak Nalchik have managed an abysmal one goal on the road this season out of five away trips. Compare the statistics of Kuban Krasnodor having won three and drawn two at home this season and Spartak Nalchik having lost four and drawn one on the road this season and we have a comfortable home win for the newly-promoted side and a definite case of under 2.5 goals, potentially even under 1.5 goals if you feel bold.
